To determine the distribution of rotavirus strain genotypes in Gwangju, Korea, we performed reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction and nucleotide sequencing analysis using the 115 rotavirus EIA positive stool specimens collected from December 2006 through April 2007. The most predominant genotype was confirmed as G1P (53.9%), followed by G3P (29.6%), G4P (8.7%), G2P (4.3%) and G9P (1.7%). A special attention is drawn to the unusual findings of the genotypes G11P and G12P during this study period. In order to investigate the phylogenetic relationships among the same or different genotypes, the nucleotide sequences of rotavirus circulating in Korea and the foreign countries were analyzed using MegAlign and Clustal X programme. The G11P strain identified in this study showed the highest nucleic acid similarity with G11 /CUK1 /2006 /Korea (99.2%) and P /Dhaka /2001 /BGD (98.7%). Meanwhile, the G12P strain detected in this study shared 99.4~99.5% nucleotide homology with the reference strain G12P /CP1030 /2004 /Japan. This incidence of new rotavirus genotypes in our area illustrates the large diversity of rotavirus strains found worldwide. Therefore, the epidemiological surveillance of rotavirus may need to be continued in a wide geographic area.

Background: The present study evaluated cardiop rotective effect of fi masartan, a new angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB), in a porcine model of acute myocardial infarction (MI). Methods: Fifty swine were randomized to group 1 (sham operation, n = 10), group 2 (no angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) or ARB, n = 10), group 3 (perindopril 2 mg daily, n = 10), group 4 (valsartan 40 mg daily, n = 10), or group 5 (fi masartan 30 mg daily, n = 10). Study medications were started orally after induction of acute MI by occlusion of the left anterior descending artery for 50 minutes and the dosage of medications was doubled at 2 weeks. Echocardiography, single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with technetium-99m sestamibi, and F-18 fl uorodeoxyglucose cardiac positron emission tomography (PET) were performed at baseline, 1 week, and 4 weeks to assess left ventricular (LV) function, infarct size, and viability. Iodine-123 meta-iodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scan was done at 6 weeks for visualization of cardiac sympathetic activity. Results: No difference was observed in SPECT perfusion defect, matched and mismatched segments between SPECT and PET across the groups at baseline, 1 week, and 4 weeks. MIBG scan showed similar uptake without difference in washout rate. On echocardiography, LV ejection fraction was lower in groups 2 to 5, compared to group 1 at 1 week but not different at 4 weeks. Pathologic analysis showed similar infarct size in groups 2 to 5. Conclusions: Infarct size reduction was not observed with use of fi masartan as well as other ACEI and ARB in a porcine model of acute MI.

Aptamers, capture molecules(oligonucleotides) for endothelial progenitor cells(EPCs), are able to recognize circulating EPCs and to bind them. To evaluate effects of the aptamer-coated stent, six pigs were utilized and three different stents-cobalt-chromium bare-metal stent(CC), paclitaxel-eluting Taxus stent(Boston Scientific, Natick, Massachusetts)(TA), and aminoparylene and aptamer-coated stent (AA)-were implanted in the three epicardial coronary arteries in a random fashion at 8 to 10 atm. Stent length and diameter was 18 mm and 3 mm. After one month, the animals underwent follow-up coronary angiography with acetylcholine(10 mL, 3 ug/mL) stimulation test and were euthanized for histologic analysis. There was a decrease in MLD in all stents: CC(12.3 ± 5.5%), TA(10.4 ± 3.7%), and AA(11.2 ± 6.3%). There was, however, no statistical difference between the groups. Neointimal thickness was lower in TA. During the acetylcholine stimulation test, severe spasm (total occlusion) was noted in 1 pig at the proximal and distal edges of the Taxus stent. Re-endothelialization score was 3.40 ± 0.52, 1.33 ± 0.52, and 3.60 ± 0.55 in CC, TA, and AA, respectively. Thrombus appearance rate was 0/6, 4/6, and 1/6 in CC, TA, and AA, respectively. The AA showed a tendency toward lower incidence of stent thrombosis and endothelial dysfunction than TA. However, the inhibition of neointimal hyperplasia was not different between CC and AA.
By giving a postcolonial edge to T. M. Thompson`s suggestion that The Plumed Serpent registers "the real transformation occur[ing] in Lawrence`s vision," a crucial part of which is "unlearning Europe," I would like to argue in this essay that The Plumed Serpent concerns the process of "decolonizing" Kate. In the novel, Kate`s identity is dubious; although Kate seems to be present in the novel as "a European," the novel as well as Kate notes that she is Irish. If Kate is the colonized as well as the colonizer, we can read The Plumed Serpent as a novel about decolonizing Ireland represented by Kate as much as about decolonizing Mexico. It is interesting that few Western critics have written about this issue. They tend to think of Kate more European than Irish, and they agree that this novel covers an encounter between a European woman and Mexicans, and in their reading, consequently, Kate represents Europe and her perspective is a Western perspective. Although seeing Kate this way is somewhat inevitable, it can imply the completeness of Kate`s colonization. This kind of criticism is only half-true. Therefore, in this essay, I would like to examine the ways in which the novel handles the issue of decolonizing Kate, arguing that an emphasis on Kate`s Irishness can make a significant revision of the reception of this novel. In particular, I will focus on the ideology of Western individualism as one of the lessons for Kate to unlearn before she is decolonized. After connecting this issue with insights from Franz Fanon, the main body of the essay deals with the process of decolonizing Kate. In the meantime, the genre of The Plumed Serpent is also discussed as the novel contains within itself a number of genres such as songs, hymns, and prayers, both Western and non-Western. This aspect of the novel, I argue, is identical with issue of decolonizing Kate. My conclusion, however, is not that individualism is replaced by collectivity or something of this nature in this novel but that the novel poses a serious question about modern Western individualism without providing any precise solution.

The modernism of D. H. Lawrence differs from that of "high" modernists such as James Joyce or Virginia Woolf. To be sure, Lawrence, like other so-called modernists, committed himself to the Poundian "make it new" project that involved rejecting conventional realism however, he was not wholly satisfied with contemporary modernism. The advent of the Kodak camera and the X-ray and the spread of the "spirit of relativity" as presented by Walter Pater had influenced contemporary artists to such a degree that Lawrence gave up "copying" reality. But he was also against contemporary modernists because they suffered from solipsism caught in the wall of the ego, thought Lawrence, they ignored reality altogether. Instead, Lawrence hoped for "a whole new marriage of mind and matter" and "a new grasp of substantial reality." To this end, he postulated two epistemological requirements: "all-aroundness," a concept that differed from the mere accumulation of fragments as expressed in typical modernist novels, and "insideness," a concept that related to the realm beyond external reality. Thus, this essay portrays Lawrence as "a new modernist" who even attempted to make modernism "new."<BR> Hoping to shed light on both Lawrentian modernism and modernism in general, the following work centers on Lawrence"s critique of conventional realism and contemporary modernism. It addresses two key questions: "what is reality" and "how can it be grasped?" The discussion below is based on several of Lawrence"s essays, but "Introduction to These Paintings" will be highlighted as itcontains many interesting insights on modern art. In addition, Women in Love, Lawrence"s most "modern" work, will be referred to, when necessary, though a detailed analysis of the novel must await separate treatment.

Background: Prognostic implications of BBB in diabetic patients with acute MI have yet to be clarifi ed. Methods: We analyzed 23,724 patients with acute MI from the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry and the Korea Working Group on Myocardial Infarction Registry. Twelve-month clinical outcome was compared between patients with BBB and those without BBB according to the presence of DM. Results: Patients with left BBB (n = 181) were older, more likely to be men, have hypertension, DM, multi-vessel disease, left ventricular dysfunction, less likely to have chest pain at presentation and receive percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and beta blockers. Allcause mortality and the rate of major adverse cardiac events (MACE: all-cause mortality, MI, and repeat revascularization) were higher in patients with left BBB at 1 month and 12 months. Patients with right BBB (n = 494) were older, more likely to be men, have prior stroke, less likely to have chest pain at presentation and PCI. All-cause mortality and MACE were similar at 1 month, but higher in patients with right BBB at 12 months. Diabetics with left BBB, compared to diabetics without left BBB, had higher prevalence of multi-vessel disease (80% vs. 65%, p = 0.024), which was similar in non-diabetics regardless of the presence of left BBB. On multivariate analysis, left BBB was associated with 12-month allcause mortality in diabetics (hazard ratio: 2.6; 95% confi dence interval: 1.25 to 5.25; p = 0.010), but not in non-diabetics, while right BBB was not an independent predictor of death regardless of diabetic status. Conclusions: In patients with acute MI, BBB was associated with worse 12-month clinical outcome. Particularly in diabetics, left BBB was associated with more extensive coronary artery disease and higher mortality.
