A Comparative Study of Request Strategies between Native and Non-Native Speakers of English
Vol.31 No.1
This paper aims to investigate Korean EFL learners’ pragmatic performance in request speech acts in comparison with native speakers of English. Written discourse completion tasks (WDCT) are used to examine how native and non-native speakers request in terms of request strategies, internal modifications, and external modifications. The results show that first, Korean learners had a higher frequency of inappropriate strategies than native speakers. Second, they lacked the quantity and variety of internal modifications both lexically and syntactically. However, regarding external modifications, their use of supportive moves was similar to that of natives in frequency and order. In addition, this study identified newly emergent supportive moves that are Korean-specific and detrimental to communication goals. The findings shed light on pragmatic instruction in the Korean EFL situation by providing research-informed data. Several pedagogical implications are suggested for application in teaching.
Adaptive Damage-Durable Electronic Epineurium for Long-Term Stable Soft Neuroprosthetics
Vol.46 No.2
Soft neuroprosthetics capable of monitoring sensory signals and delivering feedback motor information have pursued the perfect replacement for damaged nerves. Although such efforts have been made to the long-term stability of the peripheral neural interfaces, nerve compression and device fatigue issues still remain challenging due to the lack of optimal materials that simultaneously meet tissue-device modulus matching, biocompatibility, and electrical/mechanical self-recovery. Here, we report an adaptive self-recoverable electronic epineurium that can prevent its electrical degradation induced by repetitive deformation. Such performances originate from its unique mechanical properties: i) spontaneous rearrangement of Au nanoshell-coated Ag flakes dispersed in a self-healing polymer and ii) dynamic stress relaxation of the electronic epineurium enabling its mechanical adaptation to nerve modulus. Finally, we successfully demonstrate stable bidirectional neural recording and stimulation.

As more users are willingly participating in the creation of web contents, flat folksonomy using simple tags has emerged as a powerful instrument to classify and share a huge amount of knowledge on the web. However, flat folksonomy has semantic problems, such as ambiguity and misunderstanding of tags. To alleviate such problems, many studies have built structured folksonomy with a hierarchical structure or relationships among tags. However, structured folksonomy also has some fundamental problems, such as limited tagging to pre-defined vocabulary for new tags and the timeconsuming manual effort required for selecting tags. To resolve these problems, we suggested a new method of attaching a categorized tag (CT), followed by its category, to web content. CTs are automatically integrated into collaboratively-built structured folksonomy (CSF) in real time, reflecting the tag-and-category relationships by majority users. Then, we developed a CT-based knowledge organization system (CTKOS), which builds the CSF to classify organizational knowledge and allows us to locate the appropriate knowledge.
The Effect of Frequent Testing in Student Achievement and Student Perceptions of Frequent Testing

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of frequent testing in student achievement on final exams and students’ perceptions of frequent testing. For the study, the data were collected from 47 Korean university students taking an English reading and listening course in the spring of 2018. Students in a treatment group (n=23) were given 8 quizzes; students in a comparison group (n=24) were given 2 quizzes. Both groups had the same midterm and final exams in addition to the quizzes. Results of the midterm exam, final exam, pretest, and posttest in the study were used to explore the effect of frequent testing on students’ scores on final exams. The results of the study indicated that the p-value of the two groups’ final exam scores was .993 demonstrating that the two groups’ final test results were not statistically different. Furthermore, this study investigated students’ perceptions of frequent testing through the use of survey and interview. The survey and interview results revealed that students viewed frequent testing as beneficial in preparing for midterm and final exams, in not procrastinating on studying, in improving retention of the learned course material, and in studying more.
Downlink Transmit Power Allocation in Soft Fractional Frequency Reuse Systems
Donghee Kim,Jae Young Ahn,Hojoon Kim 한국전자통신연구원 2011 ETRI Journal Vol.33 No.1
Downlink transmit power allocation schemes are proposed for soft fractional frequency reuse (FFR) in loose and tightly coordinated systems. The transmit powers are allocated so that the loss of spectral efficiency from the soft FFR is minimized, and the required cell edge user throughput is guaranteed. The effect of the soft FFR on spectral efficiency is evaluated depending on the power allocation schemes and the number of subbands. Results show that the loss of spectral efficiency from the soft FFR can be reduced by configuring an appropriate number of subbands in the loosely coordinated systems. In tightly coordinated systems, results show that the loss of spectral efficiency can be minimized regardless of the number of subbands due to its fast coordination.
