        Microorganisms in Vacuum Stored Flower Bee Pollen

        Contamination with sanitary microorganisms from Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, Staphylococcaceae, Micrococcaceae and Bacillaceae families in flower bee pollen from Bulgaria after one-year vacuum-packed cold storage has been found. Dried flower bee pollens intended for human consumption were with high incidence rate of contamination with Pantoea sp. (P. agglomerans and P. agglomerans bgp6) (100%), Citrobacter freundii (47%), Proteus mirabilis (31.6%), Serratia odorifera (15.8%) and Proteus vulgaris (5.3%). Bee pollens were also positive for the culture of microorganisms from Staphylococcaceae, Micrococcaceae and Bacillaceae families: Staphylococcus hominis subsp hominis, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Arthrobacter globiformis, Bacillus pumilis, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. It was concluded that, if consumed directly, the vacuum-packed cold stored dried bee pollen, harvested according hygienic requirements from bee hives in industrial pollution-free areas without intensive crop production, is not problem for healthy human.

        Reduction Effect of Royal Jelly and Rape Honey Alone and in Combination Against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Strains

        Multidrug resistant and methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is involved in severe difficult to treat skin and soft tissue infections in humans. In the present study the antibacterial reduction effect of royal jelly (RJ), rape honey (RH), as well as in combination (RJ:RH, 1:100 w/w) against multidrug resistant MRSA strains was evaluated by means of a microbiological method "in vitro". Royal jelly and rape honey mixture possessed a higher antibacterial activity than rape honey. The concentrations of royal jelly (20 and 30% v/v) had a total inhibitory effect against tested MRSA strains. Royal jelly alone and in rape honey mix (RJ:RH, 1:100 w/w) have a potential as alternative therapeutics against MRSA strains, resistant for antibiotics.

        Sublabial Autologous Ear Cartilage Grafting for Increasing the Nasolabial Angle

        Background The loss of nasal tip support is caused by many factors and eventually results in the collapse and eventual dropping of the nasal tip. This reduces the nasolabial (NL) angle and negatively affects respiratory functions and one’s appearance. Methods The aim of this retrospective study, which was conducted on 52 patients, was to present and popularize a simple and effective method for the reconstruction of a weakened columella by inserting an autologous ear cartilage graft using a sublabial approach. Results Of all the patients, three patients experienced transplant rejection. The period of follow-up observation was one to five years (mean, 27 months). The results were objectively evaluated by measuring the NL angle in standardized photos before and after the procedure at different time intervals over the follow-up period. We observed a significant increase of the NL angle (mean, 20°), and found these results to be durable over the long term. Of the 52 patients included in this study observed patients, three were dissatisfied (due to immediate infection and shifting of the strut), 28 were satisfied, and 21 were very satisfied. Conclusions The surgical method described here is simple and can be learned quickly. It has very good results with few complications, and is our method of choice for complex and serious cases seen in everyday rhinosurgical practice.

        Small-Size Induction Machine Equivalent Circuit Including Variable Stray Load and Iron Losses

        The paper presents the equivalent circuit of an induction machine (IM) model which includes fundamental stray load and iron losses. The corresponding equivalent resistances are introduced and modeled as variable with respect to the stator frequency and flux. Their computation does not require any tests apart from those imposed by international standards, nor does it involve IM constructional details. In addition, by the convenient positioning of these resistances within the proposed equivalent circuit, the order of the conventional IM model is preserved, thus restraining the inevitable increase of the computational complexity. In this way, a compromise is achieved between the complexity of the analyzed phenomena on the one hand and the model’s practicability on the other. The proposed model has been experimentally verified using four IMs of different efficiency class and rotor cage material, all rated 1.5 kW. Besides enabling a quantitative insight into the impact of the stray load and iron losses on the operation of mains-supplied and vector-controlled IMs, the proposed model offers an opportunity to develop advanced vector control algorithms since vector control is based on the fundamental harmonic component of IM variables.

        Sensorless Maximum Power Control of a Stand-Alone Squirrel-Cage Induction Generator Driven by a Variable-Speed Wind Turbine

        For the cost-eff ectiveness of variable-speed wind energy conversion systems (WECSs), it is extremely important to extract the maximum available power at diff erent wind speeds within the normal operating range. Furthermore, reduction of the electric generator losses additionally contributes to the effi ciency of the WECS, whereas reduction of the number of sensors is benefi cial in terms of reliability and cost. This paper presents sensorless control of a stand-alone WECS comprising a squirrel-cage induction generator (IG) and a battery system. An indirect rotor-fi eld-oriented control (IRFOC) algorithm including stray load and iron losses and online tuning of IG’s equivalent resistances and magnetising inductance is adopted for IG control to achieve high level of agreement with the actual machine. Fuzzy-logic-based optimisations of the wind turbine (WT) and IG are implemented to maximise the IG output power. The IG speed, which is required by the IRFOC algorithm, is estimated by using a model-reference-adaptive-system. The estimated IG speed is also utilised for online WT optimisation in combination with the IG torque obtained from the IRFOC equations. The performance of the proposed control strategy has been experimentally evaluated and compared with two competing sensorless control strategies for two 1.5 kW IGs of diff erent effi ciency class.

        Heuristic Algorithms for Optimization of Energy Consumption in Wireless Access Networks

        Energy consumption of wireless access networks is in permanent increase, which necessitates development of more energy-efficient network management approaches. Such management schemes must result with adaptation of network energy consumption in accordance with daily variations in user activity. In this paper, we consider possible energy savings of wireless local area networks (WLANs) through development of a few integer linear programming (ILP) models. Effectiveness of ILP models providing energy-efficient management of network resources have been tested on several WLAN instances of different sizes. To cope with the problem of high computational time characteristic for some ILP models, we further develop several heuristic algorithms that are based on greedy methods and local search. Although heuristics obtains somewhat higher results of energy consumption in comparison with the ones of corresponding ILP models, heuristic algorithms ensures minimization of network energy consumption in an amount of time that is acceptable for practical implementations. This confirms that network management algorithms will play a significant role in practical realization of future energy-efficient network management systems.
