Visible Meridian Phenomena after Acupuncture: A Series of Case Reports

Background: In accordance with the meridian theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), meridian phenomena are observed along the course of a meridian following acupuncture. Their visible manifestations include alterations in the color (reddening or whitening) of the skin as well as papule and vesicle formation. Objectives: The aim of the present work is to report a series of visible meridian phenomena manifested in human subjects and to correlate them to TCM concepts. A total of 1,200 patients, on whom classical acupuncture (with standard single-use needles without electrostimulation or moxibustion) was applied, were carefully observed and documented. Methods: Visible meridian phenomena were photographed using standard photographical equipment and compared to classical acupuncture channels used by TCM. Results: Ten patients (5 male, 5 female) exhibited visible meridian phenomena. Lines, concurring with the meridians, were observed: white lines in seven cases and red lines in three cases. The duration of the two kinds of phenomena was different. White lines remained visible for a shorter period (10-15 min), whereas red lines were seen for up to one hour after needle removal. Conclusion: These observations indicate that visible meridian phenomena following acupuncture are objective, albeit rare, findings that coincide with the acupuncture channels described in the classical works of TCM. The presence of such phenomena provides a new insight into the concept of meridians and explains the development of the idea in its historical context.
Medical Internet of Things and Big Data in Healthcare

Objectives: A number of technologies can reduce overall costs for the prevention or management of chronic illnesses. These include devices that constantly monitor health indicators, devices that auto-administer therapies, or devices that track realtime health data when a patient self-administers a therapy. Because they have increased access to high-speed Internet and smartphones, many patients have started to use mobile applications (apps) to manage various health needs. These devices and mobile apps are now increasingly used and integrated with telemedicine and telehealth via the medical Internet of Things (mIoT). This paper reviews mIoT and big data in healthcare fields. Methods: mIoT is a critical piece of the digital transformation of healthcare, as it allows new business models to emerge and enables changes in work processes, productivity improvements, cost containment and enhanced customer experiences. Results: Wearables and mobile apps today support fitness, health education, symptom tracking, and collaborative disease management and care coordination. All those platform analytics can raise the relevancy of data interpretations, reducing the amount of time that end users spend piecing together data outputs. Insights gained from big data analysis will drive the digital disruption of the healthcare world, business processes and real-time decision-making. Conclusions: A new category of “personalised preventative health coaches” (Digital Health Advisors) will emerge. These workers will possess the skills and the ability to interpret and understand health and well-being data. They will help their clients avoid chronic and diet-related illness, improve cognitive function, achieve improved mental health and achieve improved lifestyles overall. As the global population ages, such roles will become increasingly important.
Improving the line intersect method: Solution that gives better results

The line intersect method (LIM) have been used in estimating the volume per unit area of dead and downed wood in northern forests. The theory and formulae behind the LIM are strengthened so as to give more precise and accurate results. The improved line intersect method (ILIM) introduces a measure of stands specific diameter:length ratio of dead and downed wood that is proven to be a factor of primary importance for the ILIMs precision. Both ILIM and LIM have been tested in the lab and in the forest and the results compared with independently determined volumes per unit area, as well as between each other. In conformity with the theory the ILIM calculates precisely the volume per unit area and gives better accuracy in terms of the narrower standard error intervals. Also in conformity with the theory the LIM was shown to overestimate the volume per unit area and to give lower accuracy in terms of its wider standard error interval. The extent of this overestimation depends on the newly introduced factor, i.e. the stand-specific measure of stands dead and downed wood diameter:length ratio.

Blockchain Applications for Healthcare Data Management

Objectives: This pilot study aimed to provide an overview of the potential for blockchain technology in the healthcare system. The review covers technological topics from storing medical records in blockchains through patient personal data ownership and mobile apps for patient outreach. Methods: We performed a preliminary survey to fill the gap that exists between purely technically focused manuscripts about blockchains, on the one hand, and the literature that is mostly concerned with marketing discussions about their expected economic impact on the other hand. Results: The findings show that new digital platforms based on blockchains are emerging to enabling fast, simple, and seamless interaction between data providers, including patients themselves. Conclusions: We provide a conceptual understanding of the technical foundations of the potential for blockchain technology in healthcare, which is necessary to understand specific blockchain applications, evaluate business cases such as blockchain startups, or follow the discussion about its expected economic impacts.
Consecutive square-free values of the form [αp], [αp]+1

In this short paper we shall prove that there exist infinitely many consecutive square-free numbers of the form [αp], [αp] + 1, where p is prime and α > 0 is irrational algebraic number. We also establish an asymptotic formula for the number of such squarefree pairs when p does not exceed given sufficiently large positive integer.

위성 Synthetic-Aperture Radar (SAR) 시스템용 도파관 배열 안테나에서 도파관 측벽 슬롯의 수평편파 방사를 위한 격벽 구성 방법

격벽 구조를 이용해서 도파관 내에서 진행하는 전기장의 진동방향을 바꾸는 방법에 대해서 보고한다. 이중편파 도파관 슬롯 배열 안테나를 설계하는 경우, 교차 편파 분리도를 충분히 확보하기 위해서 편파별로 도파관을 이용하는 방법이 사용된다. 특히 파장이 많이 짧을 경우, 배열 간격을 줄이기 위해서 측벽 슬롯을 활용해야 하는데, TE10모드에서 수평편파의 방사가 어려울 수 있다. 이때 격벽 구조를 이용하여 전기장의 방향을 회전시킴으로써 측벽의 수직 슬롯에서 방사가 가능해진다. 슬롯 배열에 따른 격벽 구조의 구성 방법, 설계와 함께 1×8 크기의 슬롯배열이 9.65 ㎓에서 16.1 ㏈i의 이득과 −15 ㏈의 입력 반사, 58 ㏈의 높은 편파 분리도를 나타내는 모의 실험 결과를 제시한다. 마지막으로 크기가 32×224인 배열 안테나에 대해서 20°까지 스캐닝하더라도 그레이팅 로브가 발생하지 않음을 확인하였다. The application of septa to change the oscillating direction of the waveguide fields is demonstrated in this study. For dual-polarization waveguide slot array antennas, two different waveguides are often used to maximize the cross-polarization discrimination level between them. In such arrays, slots may be designed on the narrow sidewall to reduce the element spacing and to suppress the grating lobes. Septums can be used to change the direction of TE10 mode electric fields, so that radiation occurs from the transverse slots on narrow sidewalls. The design and configuration of the septums for a 1×8 slot array on the narrow sidewall of a rectangular waveguide is provided, which shows a simulated gain of 16.2 ㏈i, reflection of −15 ㏈, and cross polarization discrimination level of 58 ㏈.
