The constitution of human is a stable state with the specificity of function and metabolism, which can distinguish one from another during the process that he is born, grow up and senile. This state may usually decide the specialty of physical response, sensitivity to the cause and type of disease. In Western medicine, there is a middle zone between that of disease and that of normal state, whether it can be disease or not. Based on these concept, the constitutional pathology is suggested. The constitution of human is classified into five types in the part of pathology. In this study, a experiment was designed for the scientific access of Chinese constituion theory and constitutional food therapy.

      • Fabricating highly catalytically active block copolymer/metal nanoparticle microstructures at the liquid/liquid interface

        Diao, Qi,Li, Xiaoyang,Diao, Mengxiao,Lee, Yong-Ill,Liu, Hong-Guo Elsevier 2018 JOURNAL OF COLLOID AND INTERFACE SCIENCE - Vol.522 No.-

Abstract

Hypothesis

Our previous studies have shown that the metal nanoparticle/polymer composite structures fabricated at the liquid/liquid interface have good reusability but lower catalytic activity for heterogeneous reactions in aqueous solutions. This should be attributed to the poor water wettability and more compact structure of the polymer matrices. Therefore, it should be possible to improve the catalytic activity through designing and fabricating a porous composite structure with good water wettability.

Experiments

A modified liquid/liquid interface adsorption and fabrication method was used. An aqueous solution of copper acetate and a chloroform/DMF mixed solution of PS-b-PAA acted as the two phases. Through spontaneous emulsification, self-assembly of the polymer molecules with Cu2+ ions in the droplets, and adsorption of the formed spherical micelles and nanofibers to the planar liquid/liquid interface, a porous composite microstructure was formed.

Findings

This structure consisted of nanofiber-connected nanospheres which have a PS core and a PAA corona. Tiny and well-dispersed Cu nanoparticles were embedded in the hydrophilic corona and were adsorbed on the nanofibers surface as well. After physical cross-linking with 1,6-diaminohexane, the composite material exhibited high catalytic activity and good reusability for the reactions in aqueous solutions. For example, the rate constant for the reduction of p-nitroaniline reached 1965 s−1 g−1.

Graphical abstract

Block copolymer/copper composite microstructure with highly heterogeneous catalytic activity was fabricated successfully at the liquid/liquid interface.

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

      • Impact of seawater corrosion and freeze-thaw cycles on the behavior of eccentrically loaded reinforced concrete columns

        Diao, Bo,Sun, Yang,Ye, Yinghua,Cheng, Shaohong Techno-Press 2012 Ocean systems engineering Vol.2 No.2

Reinforced concrete structures in cold coastal regions are subjected to coupled effects of service load, freeze-thaw cycles and seawater corrosion. This would significantly degrade the performance and therefore shorten the service life of these structures. In the current paper, the mechanical properties of concrete material and the structural behaviour of eccentrically loaded reinforced concrete columns under multiple actions of seawater corrosion, freeze-thaw cycles and persistent load have been studied experimentally. Results show that when exposed to alternating actions of seawater corrosion and freeze-thaw cycles, the compressive strength of concrete decreases with the increased number of freeze-thaw cycles. For reinforced concrete column, if it is only subjected to seawater corrosion and freeze-thaw cycles, the load resistance capacity is found to be reduced by 11.5%. If a more practical service condition of reinforced concrete structures in cold coastal regions is simulated, i.e., the environmental factors are coupled with persistent loading, a rapid drop of 15% - 26.9% in the ultimate capacity of the eccentrically loaded reinforced concrete column is identified. Moreover, it is observed that the increase of eccentric load serves to accelerate the deterioration of column structural behavior.

Effects of Benzoic Acid and Thymol on Growth Performance and Gut Characteristics of Weaned Piglets

        Diao, Hui,Zheng, Ping,Yu, Bing,He, Jun,Mao, Xiangbing,Yu, Jie,Chen, Daiwen Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2015 Animal Bioscience Vol.28 No.6

A total of 144 weaned crossed pigs were used in a 42-d trial to explore the effects of different concentrations/combinations of benzoic acid and thymol on growth performance and gut characteristics in weaned pigs. Pigs were randomly allotted to 4 dietary treatments: i) control (C), basal diet, ii) C+1,000 mg/kg benzoic acid+100 mg/kg thymol (BT1), iii) C+1,000 mg/kg benzoic acid+200 mg/kg thymol (BT2) and, iv) C+2,000 mg/kg benzoic acid+100 mg/kg thymol (BT3). Relative to the control, pigs fed diet BT3 had lower diarrhoea score during the overall period (p<0.10) and improved feed to gain ratio between days 1 to 14 (p<0.05), which was accompanied by improved apparent total tract digestibility of ether extract, Ca and crude ash (p<0.05), and larger lipase, lactase and sucrose activities in the jejunum (p<0.05) at d 14 and d 42. Similarly, relative to the control, pigs fed diet BT3 had higher counts for Lactobacillus spp in digesta of ileum at d 14 (p<0.05), and pigs fed diets BT1, BT2, or BT3 also had higher counts of Bacillus spp in digesta of caecum at d 14 (p<0.05), and lower concentration of ammonia nitrogen in digesta of caecum at d 14 and d 42 (p<0.05). Finally, pigs fed diet BT3 had higher concentration of butyric acid in digesta of caecum at d 42 (p<0.05), and a larger villus height:crypt depth ratio in jejunum and ileum at d 14 (p<0.05) than pigs fed the control diet. In conclusion, piglets fed diet supplementation with different concentrations/combinations of benzoic acid and thymol could improve feed efficiency and diarrhoea, and improve gut microfloral composition. The combination of 2,000 mg/kg benzoic acid+100 mg/kg thymol produced better effects than other treatments in most measurements.

      • A single vesicle-vesicle fusion assay for in vitro studies of SNAREs and accessory proteins

        Diao, Jiajie,Ishitsuka, Yuji,Lee, Hanki,Joo, Chirlmin,Su, Zengliu,Syed, Salman,Shin, Yeon-Kyun,Yoon, Tae-Young,Ha, Taekjip Nature Publishing Group, a division of Macmillan P 2012 NATURE PROTOCOLS -ELECTRONIC EDITION- Vol.7 No.5

SNARE (soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptor) proteins are a highly regulated class of membrane proteins that drive the efficient merger of two distinct lipid bilayers into one interconnected structure. This protocol describes our fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based single vesicle-vesicle fusion assays for SNAREs and accessory proteins. Both lipid-mixing (with FRET pairs acting as lipophilic dyes in the membranes) and content-mixing assays (with FRET pairs present on a DNA hairpin that becomes linear via hybridization to a complementary DNA) are described. These assays can be used to detect substages such as docking, hemifusion, and pore expansion and full fusion. The details of flow cell preparation, protein-reconstituted vesicle preparation, data acquisition and analysis are described. These assays can be used to study the roles of various SNARE proteins, accessory proteins and effects of different lipid compositions on specific fusion steps. The total time required to finish one round of this protocol is 3??6 d.

      • Tribo-Design of Coating/Substrate System

DIAO Dongfeng ENGINEERING TRIBOLOGY RESEARCH INSTITUTE KYUNGPOOK 1999 INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON HIGH PERFORMANCE OF TRI Vol.1999 No.-

The design of coatings in tribo -system able to perform well in different wear conditions without lubricants requires a combination of adequate hardness and toughness, good adhesion, a low friction coefficient and a low wear rate. Recently introduced hard coating with interlayers or lubricative particles can be a major step towards the achievement of such coatings in practical usage is their high yielding, Failure and spalling tendency. Therefore, the inhibiting factors in using these coatings for tribo-application are our limited knowledge on the critical stress for the plastic deformation or the fracture. In this paper, three kind of coating/substrate systems(coating without interlayer, coating with an interlayer and coating with particles) in tribo-contact condition were introduced from the point of view of finite element analysis. A theoretical design method for coating/substrate system was given in a series of maps in which the positions of yield initiation and the effect of design factors(coating thickness, yield strenght), as well as, contact factors(contact width, friction coefficient) on the yielding behavior of the coating/substrate system will be pointed out.

An analytical investigation of soil disturbance due to sampling penetration

        Diao, Hongguo,Wu, Yuedong,Liu, Jian,Luo, Ruping Techno-Press 2015 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.9 No.6

It is well known that the quality of sample significantly determines the accuracy of soil parameters for laboratory testing. Although sampling disturbance has been studied over the last few decades, the theoretical investigation of soil disturbance due to sampling penetration has been rarely reported. In this paper, an analytical solution for estimating the soil disturbance due to sampling penetration was presented using cavity expansion method. Analytical results in several cases reveal that the soil at different location along the sample centerline experiences distinct phases of strain during the process of sampling penetration. The magnitude of induced strain is dependent on the position of the soil element within the sampler and the sampler geometry expressed as diameter-thickness ratio D/t and length-diameter ratio L/D. Effects of sampler features on soil disturbance were also studied. It is found that the induced maximum strain decreases exponentially with increasing diameter-thickness ratio, indicating that the sampling disturbance will reduce with increasing diameter or decreasing wall thickness of sampler. It is also found that a large length-diameter ratio does not necessarily reduce the disturbance. An optimal length-diameter ratio is suggested for the further design of improved sampler in this study.

Ripple Analysis and Control of Electric Multiple Unit Traction Drives under a Fluctuating DC Link Voltage

Diao, Li-Jun,Dong, Kan,Yin, Shao-Bo,Tang, Jing,Chen, Jie The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2016 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.16 No.5

The traction motors in electric multiple unit (EMU) trains are powered by AC-DC-AC converters, and the DC link voltage is generated by single phase PWM converters, with a fluctuation component under twice the frequency of the input catenary AC grid, which causes fluctuations in the motor torque and current. Traditionally, heavy and low-efficiency hardware LC resonant filters parallel in the DC side are adopted to reduce the ripple effect. In this paper, an analytical model of the ripple phenomenon is derived and analyzed in the frequency domain, and a ripple control scheme compensating the slip frequency of rotor vector control systems without a hardware filter is applied to reduce the torque and current ripple amplitude. Then a relatively simple discretization method is chosen to discretize the algorithm with a high discrete accuracy. Simulation and experimental results validate the proposed ripple control strategy.
