Linearly Polarized Emission of Quantum Wells Subject to an In-Plane Magnetic Field

We present results on the linear polarization of the photoluminescence (PL) of dilute magnetic semiconductor quantum wells which is induced by an applied magnetic field. The PL is found to be partially linearly polarized, but without any correlation with the polarization of the exciting light, whilst the direction of the polarization does not depend on the direction of the magnetic field in the plane although its magnitude does. We present a model for this behavior in terms of a possible reduction of the in-plane symmetry of the quantum well; we conclude that any perturbations giving (i) a finite in-plane hole g-factor and (ii) a mixing of light and heavy holes are sufficient to generate the type of experimental behavior we observe.

Continued developments in control and integration applied to automatic and twin clutch powershift transmissions have provided smooth, comfortable gearshifts. However, whilst suitable for most vehicles and markets for everyday driving, such characteristics may not suit the character of a sportscar or a vehicle sports-mode for elective shifts. The paper reports upon a project[1], extending from[2,3,4], undertaken to determine the main effects and interaction of shift feel and cabin sound that influence the drivers perception of a "sporty" gear shift. Good correlation has been found for models which include data from three very different transmission types, meeting the requirement lor a predictor for shift sportiness, independent of transmission type. This has yielded predictive equations and measures of their accuracy based upon longitudinal acceleration and engine speed. Weaker correlation has been found for sound metrics, substantially due to a lower degree of consensus between the assessors.

The paper addresses the challenges of higher efficiency and lower cost than the current DCT from VW (DQ250) fitted with twin wet clutches and hydraulic control. Responsible for the design and supply of the Bugatti Veyron 7-DCT and controller. Ricardo now present some aspects of their ongoing R&D applied to the other end of the market for controlled ratio transmissions with powershift capability. The practical DCT concept is targeted at B/C class with engines up to 200 Nm with very different targets. The shan layout, meshes, and synchronization are standard: the rest of the transmission is targeted at high efficiency which is derived from two main areas: Dry clutches using a novel failsafe latching mechanism and Electrical Linear Actuators used for the clutches and shift-rails to eliminate hydraulics. Cost is reduced as a result of these mentioned devices, and the following features: Mechanical multiplexing of the linear actuators to control the entire transmission using three or potentially just two primary actuators and lubrication using carefully designed active splash channels which eliminate the need for a pump. Regarding what the driver notices, simulation and rig data suggests the combination of a friction material and the accuracy and frequency response of the linear actuation device will provide shin quality approaching that of a wet clutch system with hydraulics. Fuel economy simulation results are presented using rig-validated sub-system models to identify the magnitude of the savings from each of the design features leading to an overall improvement of 9% versus a conventional b\hydraulic DCT. Finally, the concept is shown packaged for a small EU car and a robust prediction is made of system cost.
Light Emission from Silicon Nanocrystals - Size Does Matter !

A brief overview of two recent Si nanocrystal studies undertaken at the Australian National University is presented: recent work on hydrogen passivation of non-radiative defects and attempts to measure optical gain in waveguide structures. In the rst study, a generalized treatment of hydrogen passivation and desorption is employed to model the in uence of hydrogen on silicon nanocrystal luminescence. Values for reaction-rate parameters are determined from the model and found to be in excellent agreement with values previously determined for paramagnetic Si danglingbond defects (Pb-type centers) found at planar Si/SiO2 interfaces. In the second study, an attempt is made to measure optical gain in silicon nanocrystals by monitoring the intensity of a probe beam propagating in a waveguide structure containing silicon nanocrystals during photo-excitation of the nanocrystals. The probe beam is shown to be attenuated by the excitation demonstrating the dominance of absorptive processes. No gain was observed.
A Study of Debinding Behavior and Microstructural Development of Sintered Al-Cu-Sn Alloy

A new method has been developed to fabricate microcomponents by a combination of photolithography and sintering of metallic powder mixtures, without the need for compression and the addition of Mg. This involves (1) the fabrication of a micromould, (2) mould filling of the powder/binder mixture, (3) debinding and (3) sintering. The starting powdered materials consisted of a mixture of aluminium powder(average size of 2.5 um) and alloying elemental powder of Cu and Sn(less than 70nm), at appropriate proportions to achieve nominal compositions of Al-6wt%Cu, Al-6wt%Cu-3wt%Sn. This paper presents detailed investigation of debinding behaviour and microstructural development.

We generated influenza virus-like particles (VLPs) containing the wild type (WT) H5 hemagglutinin (HA) from A/Viet Nam/1203/04 virus or a mutant H5 HA with a deletion of the multibasic cleavage motif. VLPs containing mutant H5 HA were found to be as immunogenic as VLPs containing WT HA. A single intramuscular vaccination with either type of H5 VLPs provided complete protection against lethal challenge. In contrast, the recombinant H5 HA vaccine was less immunogenic and vaccination even with a 5 fold higher dose did not induce protective immunity. VLP vaccines were superior to the recombinant HA in inducing T helper type 1 immune responses, hemagglutination inhibition titers, and antibody secreting cells, which significantly contribute to inducing protective immunity after a single dose vaccination. This study provides insights into the potential mechanisms of improved immunogenicity by H5 VLP vaccines as an approach to improve the protective efficacy against potential pandemic viruses.

<P>A search for Lorentz- and CPT-violating signals in the double beta decay spectrum of Xe-136 has been performed using an exposure of 100 kg . yr with the EXO-200 detector. No significant evidence of the spectral modification due to isotropic Lorentz -violation was found, and a two-sided limit of -2.65 x 10(-5) GeV < (a)(of),(,3r) < 7.60 x 10(-6) GeV (90% C.L.) is placed on the relevant coefficient within the Standard -Model Extension (SME). This is the first experimental study of the effect of the SME-defined oscillation -free and momentum-independent neutrino coupling operator on the double beta decay process.</P>
