Lipid deposition, especially in subcutaneous (backfat) adipose tissues, is directly related to the meat yield and quality in pork. We hypothesized that differentially expressed genes and their transcription factors play a role in the regulation of adipogenesis in porcine backfat. We identified 136 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in subcutaneous adipose tissue between two pig breeds, the Korean native pig (KNP) and Yorkshire, using a cDNA microarray. Gene ontology analysis demonstrated that some DEGs are involved in fat metabolism processes such as adipogenesis, adipocyte differentiation, and lipolysis. In addition, we identified the regulatory relationship between DEGs and their transcription factors using in silico and qRT-PCR analysis. Two transcription factors (TEF-1,IRF-7) have positively regulated DEGs in KNP backfat. Three other transcription factors (STAT3, OCT1 and HNF4) are negatively correlated with the DEGs in KNP backfat. Our findings suggest that DEGs and their transcription factors may have a potential role in adipogenesis and/or lipid deposition in backfat tissues between pig breeds.

Anti-inflammatory effects of Houttuynia cordata supercritical extract (HSE) were investigated in rat carrageenan-air pouch model. Oral administration of HSE (50-200 ㎎/㎏) suppressed carrageenaninduced exudation and albumin leakage, as well as inflammatory cell infiltration at a high dose (200 ㎎/㎏). Intraperitoneal injection of dexamethasone (2 ㎎/㎏) only decreased exudation and cell infiltration, while indomethacin (2 ㎎/㎏, i.p.) reduced exudate volume and albumin content without influence on the cell number. HSE lowered tumor-necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and nitric oxide (NO), as well as prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Dexamethasone only reduced TNF-α and NO, while indomethacin decreased PGE2. The results indicate that HSE exhibits anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting both TNF-α-NO and cyclooxygenase-2-PGE2 pathways.

Dear Editor, High-molecular-weight kininogen (HK) circulates bound to prekallikrein (PK), which can bind to negatively charged phospholipids. It is a non-enzymatic cofactor for kallikrein binding to negatively charged phospholipids. Kallikrein activates factor XII, which then activates factor XI, leading to activation of the intrinsic coagulation pathway [1].

Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) and injection therapy through qualitative and quantitative analysis by synthesizing randomized controlled trials (RCTs) conducted on patients with various shoulder diseases. Design: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trialsMethods: This review conducted a literature search through international electronic databases in January 2023 to compare the effects of ESWT and injection therapy. Qualitative analysis was performed as a risk of bias tool, and quantitative analysis was synthesized with a random effect model to show the effect size as a standardized mean difference (SMD). Results: Five RCTs involving 298 individuals with shoulder disorders were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. ESWT showed a moderate effect on pain (SMD=-0.44; 95% CI, -0.95 to 0.06) and a large effect on shoulder function (SMD =-0.81; 95% CI, -1.70 to 0.07) than injection therapy. A significant difference was found in the shoulder range of motion, showing a large effect size (SMD=1.50; 95% CI, 0.58 to 2.43). Conclusions: When considering treatment options for the management of patients complaining of shoulder disorders, it is appropriate to recommend ESWT first rather than injection therapy to increase the range of motion of the joint. In addition, ESWT is safe for pain control and shoulder function improvement, and a positive prognosis could be expected.

A series of molecular weight controlled polyimide oligomer (Oligo-PI) resins were developed via thepolymerization of 4,4’-(1,3-phenylenedioxy)dianiline (TPE-R), 2,3’,3,4’-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) and4-phenylethynyl phthalic anhydride (PEPA). PEPA was served as the molecular weight controlling and reactive end-cappingagent. Oligo-PI resins have an asymmetric and amorphous structure, which could make better processability to fabricatecomposites. To investigate the effect of molecular weight (MW) and chain extension structures of phenylethynyl groups bythermal curing on thermal and mechanical properties, carbon fabric reinforced Oligo-PIs (Oligo-PI/CFs) were prepared viahot press technique. Morphology, mechanical and thermal properties of Oligo-PI/CFs were measured by SEM, TGA, IZODimpact tester, and UTM (three-point bending test). As MW got higher and the ordered network structures were formed, thecomposite exhibited excellent thermal stability. Flexural strengths also increased by building the crosslinked structures. Onthe other hand, impact strengths were less influenced. Among Oligo-PI/CFs, Oligo-PI/CF-3 showed comparatively goodperformance. The mechanical properties of Oligo-PI/CF-3 (5 ply) was evaluated at both 25 °C and 200 °C. The compositemaintained high strengths even at high temperatures, demonstrating the durability of Oligo-PI/CFs in harsh conditionsutilized for the aerospace and military applications.
