      • Development of interactive comparative analysis platform for translation of genomic information across different plant species

        Daejin Hyung,Chaeyoung Lee,Jinhyun Kim,Dongwoon Yu,Yejin Jo,Jusuk Park,Eunji Kwon,Hongkyu Choi 한국육종학회 2013 한국육종학회 심포지엄 Vol.2013 No.07

Comparative analysis is a typically useful tool for translating genomic information from one species to another. However, currently available softwares are relatively difficult to directly use for researchers that are not familiar with use of bioinformatic tools. Therefore, we intended to develop a new platforms and/or interface through which one can use in more comfortable way, based on the concept of interactive comparative analysis. Towards this direction, we, firstly, constructed relational database to store the information on abiotic stress genes identified from multiple plant species using various resources, such as the TAIR (http://www.arabidopsis.org), gene expression profiles and relevant literatures, and linked with comparative analysis interface. For purposes of comparative analysis and identification of synteny blocks, cross-species orthologous genes were determined using a combination of tBlastX and BlastP homology searches. We adapted and developed a Circos-like format to present resulting comparative maps. Users can readily choose analysis parameters, for example individual genes and specific chromosomes for chosen species, in the pane of analysis DB, which is useful feature to avoid complexity of comparative genomic analysis. This DB-associated comparative analysis tool, developed in this study, will be able to provide customer-friendly interface for comparative analysis and extend its utility across a broader range of plant genomes.

Vertical Mammaplasty for Varying Degrees of Reduction

2016 Archives of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Vol.22 No.3

Background Vertical reduction mammaplasty has been criticized for its inability to address larger cases of mammary hypertrophy, with a relatively high frequency of sensory loss reported. This article describes our single-institution experience with modified vertical reduction mammaplasty for varying degrees of breast reduction. Methods Thirty-three patients underwent breast reduction using the modified vertical reduction mammaplasty technique with a superomedial dermoglandular pedicle and modifications involving breast parenchyma excision. The degree of sensory preservation in the nipple-areola complex (NAC) was compared with preoperative sensation using an ordinal scale (0, insensate; 10, unchanged). Postoperative outcomes were evaluated through a photogrammetric analysis. Satisfaction with postoperative outcomes was assessed using a telephone questionnaire survey (1, very poor; 5, very good). Results The modified vertical mammaplasty technique allowed for reductions of up to 1,800 g per side. The mean resection weight was 459.24 g per breast (range, 76-1,800 g). Of the 59 operations, 9 involved complications without significant morbidity. The sensibility of the NAC recovered in most patients by 5 months after the operation. The mean satisfaction score was 3.4, which was between ‘no change’ and ‘satisfied.’ Conclusions Modified vertical reduction mammaplasty allows a single surgeon to address varying degrees of breast hypertrophy.

Vol.22 No.11

Sorafenib is a multikinase inhibitor and an oral anticancer drug approved for the treatment of patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma and those with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. The purpose of this study was to develop an efficient method of the determination of sorafenib in human plasma using tandem mass spectrometry coupled with liquid chromatography (LC/MS/MS) and validate the method by the guidelines of the Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA). Plasma samples (100 μl) were added with chlorantraniliprole as an internal standard and then mixed with the 0.1% formic acid-containing extraction solution composed of isopropyl alcohol and ethyl acetate (1:4, v/v). After centrifugation, the supernatant was concentrated at 45°C under negative pressure and centrifugal force. The residue was reconstituted with a mobile phase and injected into the HPLC instrument using a reverse phase Waters XTerraTM C18 column (particle size 3.5 μm). Liquid chromatography was carried out within the run time of 5 min using a mobile phase composed of buffer (0.1% formic acid and 10 mM ammonium formate), methanol, and acetonitrile (1:6:3, v/v/v). The analytes were monitored by tandem mass spectrometry in the multiple reaction monitoring method programmed to detect sorafenib at ‘m/z 465.2 → 252.5’ and chlorantraniliprole at ‘m/z 484.4 → 286.2’ with positive electrospray ionization mode (ES+). The result showed the proper linearity (r2>0.99) over the range of 2,000-5,000 ng/ml with good accuracy (90.7-103.9%) and precision (less than 10%). The newly developed method using LC/MS/MS was validated by the guideline of KFDA and identified as more sensitive compared to the previous methods.

The impact of bilingualism on creativity of interpreters : What makes a difference?

Vol.17 No.2

This study reviews the nature and impact of bilingualism on interpreters with special interest on creativity of interpreters. Interpreters are highly trained bilinguals specialized in helping and smoothing inter-lingual and inter-cultural communication between two different communication groups. As revealed in several studies, the working memory capacity of interpreters develops in a positive direction in order to satisfy the cognitive processing burden during on-time interpretation endeavors. Some studies noted an increase in size of specific brian areas responsible for working memory during intensive interpretation training. It was also found that working memory renders constructive contribution to the enhancement of creativity capacity. Various studies on the cognitive development and creativity with emphasis on bilingualism have been examined and analyzed in an effort to explore possible directions for further studies on the relationship between interpreter’s working memory and creativity development.

Exploring the Interpreter’s Brain : What Makes the Difference?

Vol.18 No.3

This study attempts to review and synthesize the studies on simultaneous interpretation processes with psycholinguistic and cognitive perspectives. Many scholars have been curious about how trained interpreters perform apparently impossible simultaneous interpreting tasks seamlessly. A systematic analysis of the detailed cognitive processes of interpretation, however, presupposes the direct observation of any particular cerebral activities in vivo. The recent development in medical imaging technology enables direct observation and recording of the brain activities during interpretation tasks. In addition to the use of new technology, the integration of knowledge on bilingual processing gained from various academic domains also offers many stimulating findings on simultaneous interpretation processes. This paper delves into Basal Ganglia of the Striatum in human brain for its role in successful execution of simultaneous interpretation.

      • A Low-Power Time-Synchronization Processor With Symmetric Even/Odd Timer for Charge-Shared LCD Driving of 3DTV Active Shutter Glasses

Daejin Park,Tag Gon Kim,Jeonghun Cho IEEE 2014 Journal of display technology Vol.10 No.12

<P>The proposed sync-processor enables a fractional-order time-synchronization to generate an efficient lens shutter-control timing for the charge-shared LCD lens driving in the 3DTV active shutter glasses. This design implements a universal sync-edge tracer as a pre-processor to form the unit event of the wireless sync-packet, a fractional-order timer to measure the timing period for accurate synchronization of the stereo-vision, and charge-shared driver controlled by the proposed symmetric even/odd timer to provide an efficient charge equalization method. The proposed symmetric even/odd timer block sequentially generates the driver switching events by distributing the driver activation into four pins of the LCD active shutter lenses to reuse the pre-pumped charge of the charge-shared LCD driver, which is sequentially shared between four pins for LCD lens. The proposed sequential lens control by distributing the charge-sharing events also enables the reduction of the hardware size required for the counters and overflow comparators in the switching timer to generate the pulse width modulation (PWM) pulse waveform of the LCD lens control for time-sequential 3D stereo-vision. The implemented one-chip solution, which is applied with all of the proposed techniques to improve the previous work, reduces about 140 μA of LCD lens driving current, which results in about 30% current reduction in total. This paper describes the system's architecture and the details of the proposed techniques, while also identifying the key concepts and functions.</P>

      • Liquidity risk and Exchange-traded-fund returns, variances, and tracking errors

Vol.2015 No.05

This paper investigates the e ect of the ETF illiquidity on the ETF tracking error, return, and volatility. Both ETF illiquidity and ETF tracking errors are positively related and are persistent over time. The empirical tests of the liquidity adjusted capital asset pricing model show that illiquid ETFs tend to be more sensitive to underlying index returns or ETF market liquidity, and a positive liquidity premium exists in the US ETF markets. Further, I show that an ETF variance is typically larger than its NAV variance when the ETF is not actively traded. This result con rms that illiquid ETFs are much riskier when market liquidity declines sharply.
