<P>We report a measurement of the ratio R(D*) = B((B) over bar (0) -> D*(+)tau(-)(nu) over bar (tau))/B((B) over bar (0) -> D*(+)l(-)(nu) over bar (l))where l denotes an electron or a muon. The results are based on a data sample containing 772 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs recorded at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider. We select a sample of B-0(B) over bar (0) pairs by reconstructing both B mesons in semileptonic decays to D*(-/+)l(+/-). We measure R(D*) = 0.302 +/- 0.030(stat) +/- 0.011(syst), which is within 1.6 sigma of the Standard Model theoretical expectation, where the standard deviation sigma includes systematic uncertainties. We use this measurement to constrain several scenarios of new physics in a model-independent approach.</P>

The production of D*+/-(2010) mesons in e+/-p scattering in the range of exchanged photon virtuality 0.05<Q2<0.7 GeV2 has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82 pb-1. The decay channels D*+->D0π+ with D0->K-π+ and corresponding antiparticle decay were used to identify D* mesons and the ZEUS beampipe calorimeter was used to identify the scattered electron. Differential D* cross sections as functions of Q2, inelasticity, y, transverse momentum of the D* meson, pT(D*), and pseudorapidity of the D* meson, η(D*), have been measured in the kinematic region 0.02<y<0.85, 1.5<pT(D*)<9.0 GeV and |η(D*)|<1.5. The measured differential cross sections are in agreement with two different NLO QCD calculations. The cross sections are also compared to previous ZEUS measurements in the photoproduction and DIS regimes.

<P>We present the measurement of the absolute branching fractions of B+ -> Xc (c) over barK+ and B+ -> (D) over bar ((*)0)pi(+) decays, using a data sample of 772 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs collected at the gamma(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. Here, X-c (c) over bar denotes eta(c), J/psi, chi(c0), chi(c1), eta(c) (2S), psi(2S), psi(3770), X(3872), and X(3915). We do not observe significant signals for X(3872) or X(3915) and set the 90% confidence level upper limits at B(B+ -> X(3872)K+) < 2.6 x 10(-4) and B(B+ -> X(3915)K+) < 2.8 x 10(-4). These represent the most stringent upper limit for B(B+ -> X(3872)K+) to date and the first limit for B(B+ -> X(3915)K+). The measured branching fractions for eta(c) and eta(c)(2S) are the most precise to date, B(B+ -> eta K-c(+)) = (12.0 +/- 0.8 +/- 0.7) x 10(-4) and B(B+ -> eta(c)(2S)K+) = (4.8 +/- 1.1 +/- 0.3) x 10(-4), where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.</P>

The effects of several sources of dietary fiber on the water and sodium (Na) metabolism of rats were investigated. Wheat bran (D2), pure cellulose (D3), and ground rice straw (D4) replaced corn in the control diet (D1) at the level of 10%: pectin (DS), which is water-soluble, replaced corn at 5% level. In the growth trial with 45 female weanling rats (Sprague Dawley strain), the growth rate of DS was significantly (P≤.05) lower than those of D1 and D2. No difference in growth rate was found among D3, D4 and D5. With regard to water intake of growing rats, there was no difference among all treatments. In metabolism trial with 30 adult male rats, the dry matter (DM) digestibilities of D3 and D4 were significantly lower than those of D1, D2 and D5. Similar DM digestibilities were found in D1, D2 and D5. As in the case of growing rats, no difference was found in water intake among five treatments. With regard to water holding capacity (WHC) of feces, D3 and D4 showed significantly larger values than D2. The WHC of D1 and D5 were even lower (P≤.05) than D2. The bulls density (BD) of feces was exactly in the inverse relationship with WHC. The BD of D3 and D4 were significantly smaller than the other treatments. D1 and D5 showed significantly larger BD than did D2. In terms of Na excretion routes of urine and feces, D1 and DS excreted significantly more Na via urine than did D3 and D4. The D2 showed intermediate values in this respect. No difference was found in Na^+ and osmotic concentrations either in plasma or urine among dietary treatments. With regard to plasma clearances, there was no difference among all treatments in C_(Na)^+, C_(osm) anti C_(H₂O), The C_(H₂O) values from all treatments showed negative values, indicating that the rats were removing excess solutes in body fluids via urine. Among the water-insoluble fibers, wheat bran appeared to be less fibrous than pure cellulose or ground rice straw in several respects, i.e., growth rate, feral WHC and BD, and the route of Na excretion. Except that it inhibits the growth rate of young rats, pectin brought about the same effect as did the control diet, indicating that the gut microflora fermented the water-soluble pectin. Different nutritional and physiological effects might be expected from rats fed dietary fibers having different solubility in water.

The pT-differential inclusive production cross section of the prompt charm-strange meson Ds+ in the rapidity range |y|<0.5 was measured in proton-proton collisions at s=7 TeV at the LHC using the ALICE detector. The analysis was performed on a data sample of 2.98x108 events collected with a minimum-bias trigger. The corresponding integrated luminosity is Lint=4.8 nb-1. Reconstructing the decay Ds+→φπ+, with φ→K-K+, and its charge conjugate, about 480 Ds+/- mesons were counted, after selection cuts, in the transverse momentum range 2<pT<12 GeV/c. The results are compared with predictions from models based on perturbative QCD. The ratios of the cross sections of four D meson species (namely D0, D+, D@?+ and Ds+) were determined both as a function of pT and integrated over pT after extrapolating to full pT range, together with the strangeness suppression factor in charm fragmentation. The obtained values are found to be compatible within uncertainties with those measured by other experiments in e+e-, ep and pp interactions at various centre-of-mass energies.

The thermal interaction of a buoyant plume from a calandria tube with an oblique jet
Rossouw, D.J.,Atkins, M.D.,Beharie, K.,Kim, T.,Rhee, B.W.,Kim, H.T. Elsevier 2016 Nuclear engineering and design Vol.310 No.-
<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Severe reactor core damage may occur from fuel channel failure as a consequence of excessive heat emitted from calandria tubes (CTs) in a pressurised heavy water (D2O) reactor (CANDU). The heating of the CTs is caused by creep deformation of the pressure tubes (PTs), which may be ballooning or sagging depending on the internal pressure of the PTs. The deformation of the pressure tube is due to overheating as a result of a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) and emergency core cooling system (ECCS) failure. To prevent the exacerbation of the LOCA, circulating D2O in the moderator tank may be utilized by forming a secondary jet that externally cools the individual CTs. The buoyant plume develops around the CTs and interacts with the secondary jet at a certain oblique angle with respect to the gravitational axis, depending on the spatial location of the hot calandria tubes (or the hot reactor core region). This study reports on how the local and overall heat transfer characteristics on a calandria tube where the buoyant plume develops, are altered by the obliqueness of the external secondary jet (from a co-current jet to a counter-current jet) in a simplified configuration at the jet Reynolds number of <I>Rej </I> =1500 for the Archimedes number of <I>ArD </I> =0.11 and Rayleigh number of <I>RaD </I> =1.6×106 (modified Rayleigh number of 3.0×107).</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A crucial role of relative orientation between mixed convection modes is observed. </LI> <LI> The extent of thermal interaction strongly depends on the relative orientation. </LI> <LI> Coolant flow is substantially diffused by a buoyant plume if counter-acting. </LI> <LI> Slightly oblique coolant flow to the gravitational axis provides the best cooling. </LI> </UL> </P>
Paenibacillus pueri sp. nov., isolated from Pu'er tea
Kim, B.-C.,Jeong, W.-J.,Kim, D. Y.,Oh, H.-W.,Kim, H.,Park, D.-S.,Park, H.-M.,Bae, K. S. Microbiology Society 2009 International journal of systematic and evolutiona Vol.59 No.5
<P>Pu'er tea is a fermented drink made from the leaves of the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. Two novel bacteria, designated strains b09i-3(T) and b13i-1, were isolated during the process of fermentation of this tea. These isolates were Gram-positive, endospore-forming, motile rods that grew at 25-42 degrees C and pH 5.5-10.4. The DNA G+C content was 56.6-58.4 mol%, the predominant isoprenoid quinone was MK-7 and the predominant cellular fatty acid was anteiso-C(15 : 0) (49.0-50 % of the total). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains b09i-3(T) and b13i-1 shared 99.9 % similarity and were affiliated with a cluster within the family Paenibacillaceae. Strains b09i-3(T) and b13i-1 were related most closely to Paenibacillus ginsengihumi DCY16(T) (97 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). Levels of DNA-DNA relatedness between the two novel isolates and P. ginsengihumi DCY16(T) were below 56 %. The phylogenetic and phenotypic characteristics of these novel isolates allowed them to be distinguished clearly from recognized species of the genus Paenibacillus. Based on these data, strains b09i-3(T) and b13i-1 are considered to represent a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus pueri sp. nov. is proposed. The type species is b09i-3(T) (=KCTC 13223(T)=CECT 7360(T)).</P>

The angular distribution of emission angle θ of helium (Z=2) produced in the collisions of incident particles of 200 GeV/nucleon ^32S in nuclear emulsion is well expressed by dN=exp[a+k exp(η-y_b)]d[exp(η-y_b)] where the pseudorapidity is η=-ln[tan(θ/2)], the laboratory system primary rapidity is y_b, and k=-0.057+0.008. The shape of this frequency of occurrence distributions in terms of exp(η-y_b) attests to the validity of the concept of "limiting fragmentation" for helium projectile fragments produced in the projectile fragmentation regions of heavy ion collisions in nuclear emulsion.
