Vol.10 No.2
This article is about the education on Korean traditional music (Kook-ak), exploring the role of "musicking" in the transmission of musical heritage and the formation of cultural identity. Through "musicking", in the cases of successful Kook-ak classes in elementary schools at present, the teachers and students could share certain factors of Korean culture and internalize Kook-ak as Korean music. In other words, "musicking" accompanied the process of awakening certain "feelings" toward Kook-ak to regard it as the Korean music, which were transmitted to the students through music classes and made them practice this "new" Korean music in their everyday lives. This arouses the motivation to learn Kook-ak as a part of Korean culture among the students. The education of Kook-ak through "musicking" is a teaching and learning process by which both the instructors and recipients directly experience that music, thereby leading to an education in the emotional dimension:"the socialization of emotion". As a result, this article shows that Kook-ak have potentials to be revived as Korean music rather than remain merely as an old-fashioned traditional music.
