      • Reconstruction of Complete Stress Tensor from Earthquake Fault Plane Solutions and a Rational Stress Constraint Model

        From the orientations of fault planes and slip directions, a best fit regional principal stress directions and a relative stress ratio can be determined, under the assumption that a uniform stress exists in the region of faulting. If we can know further the strength of a fault zone and if we may assume that vertical stress being equal to the overburden pressure, then it is possible to construct a complete stress tensor for the region of faulting. However, the strength of a fault zone is difficult to obtain by common testing method. We can only estimate that in a very rough way. Crustal stress constraint has been discussed by many authors in the past two decades. Most of them use Byerlee's law as a strength criterion for calculation. Instead of it, the present author suggests a stress constraint model by using undrained montmorillonite strength. The result is more reasonable as checked with world stress measurement data. Using Taiwan earthquake focal mechanism data set as example, we reconstruct mean complete stress tensor for a group of earthquakes by adopting an inversion scheme as described in the text. The result shows that in many cases, montmorillonite strength about 300 bars still cannot lead to a good result. Instead of this, lower strength about 100 bars must be used, so that the resulting stresses can be interpreted by our crustal stress constraint model.

      • A Study on Implementation and Development of Big Data on O2O Model in China Catering Industry

        2013 年被互聯網業界譽爲“大數據元年”,2014 則爲被視中國餐飮“O2O 元年”。近年來中國餐飮行業進入了調整期,餐飮企業的生存狀況急劇惡化,越來越多的餐飮企業開始尋조新的銷수及營銷渠道,線上互聯網和線下餐飮商戶相結合的餐飮行業O2O 模式隨之走熱,但目前大部分O2O 平臺和線下商家都僅僅將其停留在傳播推廣名牌的層面,如何將此模式與大數據結合竝推進餐飮O2O 模式進壹步發展是壹個値得探討的問題。本文從O2O 模式槪入手,探尋了 O2O模式與餐飮行業的融合性問題,竝就目前大數據時代下中國餐飮O2O 模式的應用現狀和甁頸進行分析硏究,指出大數據時代020 的核心是向重用戶體驗發展,通過線上平臺與雲服務器、餐飮管理系統的信息化無縫閉環,處理、轉化、應用大數據,爲線下餐飮企業所服務,竝就大數據時代餐飮O2O 創新模式進行前瞻性預測。 O2O commerce model is a new e-commerce business model which emerging in recent years. China catering industry experienced an adjustment period currently, more and more catering enterprises start looking for new business models for sales and marketing. O2O commerce model has become a comfortable first option of restaurant owners, but most O2O platforms and merchants just focus on branding promotion, and how to connect this model to big data and improve O2O model of catering industry is a topic which is worth discussing. This article starts from the conception of O2O model, explores the fusion of O2O model and catering industry, then analyzes the application and bottleneck on O2O of china catering industry under the age of big data, and points out the core of O2O under big data time is user experience. Finally, innovative O2O model is analyzed from three aspects in the future development prospects.

      • Catching Algorithm for 2D Robot Manipulator Using PD controller

        This paper presents the catching control method using conventional PD controller. Firstly the mathematical model is derived for 2DOF catching robot, the equation is constructed based on the real author’s developed catching robot, then the PD controller will be designed for the manipulator to follow the trajectory created by the object on 2D plane when it travel in the perpendicular plane and catch it. We confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method by computer simulation. In the future we will implement the PD controller to the real machine.

      • Assessing impact of Natural Disasters on Tourist Arrivals: The Case of Xitou Nature Education Area (XNEA), Taiwan

        Tourist arrivals represent popularity of a recreation site. However it could be changed due to accessibility, weather, and natural disaster. These factors are complex and their effects on tourist arrival are mixed. This study applies switching regression approach to assess impact of natural disasters on tourist arrivals in the popular forest recreation and education site, Xitou Nature Education Area (XNEA), Taiwan. Natural disaster in a tourist destination cause environmental changes which impact short- and long-term changes on tourist arrivals. Precisely estimating the impacts on tourist arrivals could therefore provide an insight to management. The results show that (1) Typhoon Herb reduced tourist arrivals by an estimated 530 thousand over three years; (2) the Chichi earthquake caused a 2.59 million loss in tourist arrivals over seven years; (3) Typhoons Toraji and Nari resulted in a 360 thousand reduction in tourist arrivals over three years; and (4) Typhoon Mindulle reduced tourist arrivals by 80 thousand over a one-year period.

      • RETURNS TO HUMAN CAPITAL AND WAGE INEQUALITY: THE CASE OF TAIWAN

        To compare with the literature on Taiwan study of wage inequality by the turn of Twenty-First Century, using Taiwan’s 1978-2003 Manpower Utilization Survey data, this paper estimates the trends of returns to education and experience and investigates the relationship between returns to human capital, ability, and wage inequality. Over the period, return to higher education has an increasing trend while the wage inequality reveals a declining tendency, a phenomenon also contradicted to existing literature, e.g., Castelló-Climent and Doménech (2014). Using quantile regression, we further discover the relations between human capital accumulation and unobserved ability, i.e., education and ability are substitutes while experience and ability tend to complement each other. Education enables those less able people to improve upon their disadvantages and thus improve wage inequality. Moreover, wage inequality is lower in females than in males for every educational level and more experienced groups. Contrary to the existing literature, Taiwan’s empirical study demonstrates that the increasing employment share of more educated workers and/or females will improve instead of worsen wage inequality. Policy implications are also discussed based on Taiwan’s experience.

        Improvement of Available Battery Capacity in Electric Vehicles

        This paper proposes a new method to improve the available battery capacity in electric vehicles by connecting lead-acid batteries with lithium-ion battery in parallel to supply power. In addition, this method combines the discharge characteristics of batteries to improve their efficiency and lower their cost for electric vehicles. A lithium-ion battery set is used to connect with N sets of lead-acid batteries in parallel. The lead-acid battery supplies the initial power. When the lead-acid battery is discharged by the load current until its output voltage drops to the cut-off voltage, the power management unit controls the lead-acid battery and changes it to discharge continuously with a small current. This discharge can be achieved by connecting the lead-acid battery to a lithium-ion battery in parallel to supply the load power or to discharge its current to another lead-acid or lithium-ion battery. Experimental results demonstrates that the available capacity can be improved by up to 30% of the rated capacity of the lead-acid batteries.

      • Community Assets and Linkages to Small Business Location Decisions : A Case Study in Vermont

        The goal of this research is to identify the assets and constraints that exist specific to small business manufacturers in Vermont. To satisfy this goal, the study examines factors that influence location decisions as well as identifying what obstacles business owners have experienced. The idea for this project originated in response to the troubled economic condition of several Vermont communities, where unemployment rates are unusually high and income unusually low. Understanding what obstacles business faces might enable future ideas on how to solve these problems. Once assets are identified, they can be capitalized on, leading to more successful business operations. Preliminary data was collected through a telephone interview survey with Vermont small business owners. The data was analyzed in order to discover incentives and obstacles that existed for Vermont manufacturers as a whole, as well as in specific industries. Results from the survey suggested that Vermont' s largest asset is that it offers an excellent quality of life. However, results alluded to several difficulties that owners are faced with, particularly complying with certain rules and regulations, obtaining adequate finances, a low- skilled workforce, and a weak communication network for small businesses.

        Effects of charge storage dielectric thickness on hybrid gadolinium oxide nanocrystal and charge trapping nonvolatile memory

        The characteristics of hybrid gadolinium oxide nanocrystal (Gd2O3-NC) and gadolinium oxide charge trapping (Gd2O3-CT) memories were investigated with different Gd2O3 film thickness. By performing the rapid thermal annealing on Gd2O3 films with different thickness, the Gd2O3-NCs with the diameter of 6 e9 nm for charge storage, surrounded by the amorphous Gd2O3 (a-Gd2O3) layer, were formed. The a-Gd2O3 layer was considered to be the charge trapping layer, resulting in the large memory window of Gd2O3-NC/CT memories with thick Gd2O3 film. The charge trapping energy level of the Gd2O3-NCs and a-Gd2O3 layer was extracted to be 0.16 and 0.45 eV respectively by using the temperature-dependent retention measurement. Further, after a 106 program/erase cycling operation, the memory with thin Gd2O3 film can be predicted to sustain a 94% memory window of the first cycling one while the memory with thick Gd2O3 film suffered from a 30% charge loss because of the traps within the a-Gd2O3 layer. The Gd2O3 film thickness of 10 nm was optimized to exhibit superior performances of the Gd2O3-NC/CT memory, which can be applied into the nonvolatile memory.
