          Alkaloids of Linderae Radix suppressed the lipopolysaccharide-induced expression of cytokines in cultured macrophage RAW 264.7 cells

          Linderae Radix, the dry roots of Lindera aggregata (Sims) Kosterm, has long been used as traditional Chinese medicine for treatment of inflammatory diseases. The total alkaloids are believed to be the active components responsible for anti-inflammation of Linderae Radix. Here, the total alkaloids of Linderae Radix were extracted and isolated, including 12 isoquinoline alkaloids and 1 furan sesquiterpene. Within the alkaloids, norisoboldine, boldine, linderaline, isoboldine, reticuline, N-methyllaurotetanine, norjuziphine were found to be the major ingredients. In lipopolysaccharide-treated macrophage RAW 264.7 cells, application of Linderae Radix extract, or total alkaloids, suppressed the transcription of proinflammatory cytokines, interleukin-$1{\beta}$ and interleukin-6. Out of the 12 alkaloids, norisoboldine, boldine, and isoboldine were tested in lipopolysaccharide-treated macrophages, and norisoboldine was the strongest alkaloid in suppressing the cytokine expressions. The current studies suggested that the identification of alkaloids from Linderae Radix could provide a plausible explanation for herbal therapeutic functions.

          Quercetin-mediated Cell Cycle Arrest and Apoptosis Involving Activation of a Caspase Cascade through the Mitochondrial Pathway in Human Breast Cancer MCF-7 Cells

          Dietary polyphenols have been correlated with a reduced risk of developing cancer. Quercetin (a natural polyphenolic compound) induced apoptosis in many human cancer cell lines, including breast cancer MCF-7 cells. However, the involvement of possible signaling pathways and the roles of quercetin in apoptosis are still undefined. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of quercetin on the induction of the apoptotic pathway in human breast cancer MCF-7 cells. When MCF-7 cells were treated with quercetin for 24 and 48 h and at various doses (10-175 μM), cell viability decreased significantly in time- and dose-dependent manners. Exposure of MCF-7 cells to 10-175 μM quercetin resulted in an approximate 90.25% decrease in viable cells. To explicate the mechanism underlying the antiproliferative effect of quercetin, cell cycle distribution and apoptosis in MCF-7 cells was investigated after exposure to 150 μM quercetin for 6-48 h. Quercetin caused a remarkable increase in the number of S phase (14.56%to 61.35%) and sub-G1 phase cells (0.1% to 8.32%) in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Quercetin caused S phase arrest by decreasing the protein expression of CDK2, cyclins A and B while increasing the p53 and p57 proteins. Following incubation with quercetin for 48 h, MCF-7 cells showed apoptotic cell death by the decreased levels of Bcl-2 protein and ΔΨ m and increased activations of caspase-6, -8 and -9. Moreover, quercetin increased the AIF protein released from mitochondria to nuclei and the GADD153 protein translocation from endoplasmic reticulum to the nuclei. These data suggested that quercetin may induce apoptosis by direct activation of the caspase cascade through the mitochondrial pathway in MCF-7 cells.

          本 論文은 南韓의 代表的 高冷地인 大關嶺地域의 火田의 土地利用形態와 經營構造에 關한 地理學的 硏究이다. 本 硏究는 오랫동안 隔絶的 環境에 놓여있는 까닭에 停滯的인 地域으로 알려져 왔다. 그러나 近代 自動車交通의 發達과 아울러 高冷地土地利用의 必要性이 漸次 高潮됨에 따라 土地 利用方式이나 經營構造에 적지않는 變遷을 가져오게 되었다. 더욱 低暖地農業의 移植段階에 놓은 高冷地 農業으로서의 火田은 典型的인 土地經營을 보여 주고있다. 따라서 地理學的으로 疑問나는 點도적지 아니 하다. 이러한 時點에 本橋는 大關嶺地域利用의 變遷過程을 通하여 火田土地利用의 地域性과 아울러 火田이 山地利用의 方式으로서 어떠한 要因에 依據하여 發展되며 한편 現在 어떠한 類型을 갖고 있는가를 明確히 究明하고 나아가서 이와같은 土地經營에서 얻어지는 經濟的構造는 어떠한가를 究明코져 한데 있다. 그 主된 內容은 火田의 作付體系를 비롯하여 火田의 形成過程과 成立의 諸 條件, 作物과 高度 및 傾斜關係, 火田의 經營規模와 그 內容 및 火田農民의 經濟的 形成等을 指標로하여 分析하였다. 一般的으로 火田은 原始的 農業의 殘存形으로 알려져왔다. 그러나 過去의 火田은 土地保存이나 施肥慣行이 없는 掠舊的 農業에 不過하였으나 오늘날의 火田은 市場과 結合되어 收益性높은 商品作物을 栽培하고 있다는 點이 過去의 火田과는 다른點이라 보겠다. 따라서 오늘날의 火田은 山地開發의 進展에 따라 自然環境에 適應한 하나의 生産體系로서의 土地利用이 이루어져 가고 있다.

          Fertility, the Quality of Children and Economic Growth

          This paper develops a theory of the fertility choice that focus on the shadow price of the quality of children and fertility rate within a framework of long term economic growth. The analysis also links the shadow price of quality with the interaction between fertility and economic growth. Through the choice of per child quality within family, the analysis contributes to narrowing the many remaining gaps between endogenous family decisions on fertility and aggregate economic growth.           Photometric Orbital Analysis of an Eclipsing Binary System, RZ Draconis

          Two-Color photoelectric observations were made at Flower and Cook Observatory, University of Pennsylvania. Since the spectroscopic elements are available for the system, derivation of an absolute physical dimension is now expected to be feasible. Results of computation of the orbital elements lead to a fact that the system shows an annular eclipse rather than a partial which is a finding reported by Shapley.

          WNKs: protein kinases with a unique kinase domain

          WNKs (with-no-lysine [K]) are a family of serine-threonine protein kinases with an atypical placement of the catalytic lysine relative to all other protein kinases. The roles of WNK kinases in regulating ion transport were first revealed by the findings that mutations of two members cause a genetic hypertension and hyperkalemia syndrome. More recent studies suggest that WNKs are pleiotropic protein kinases with important roles in many cell processes in addition to ion transport. Here, we review roles of WNK kinases in the regulation of ion balance, cell signaling, survival, and proliferation, and embryonic organ development.

          Comparing Two Approaches of Analyzing Mixed Finite Volume Methods

          Given the anisotropic Poisson equation $-{\nabla}{\cdot}{\mathcal{K}}{\nabla}p=f$, one can convert it into a system of two first order PDEs: the Darcy law for the flux $u=-{\mathcal{K}{\nabla}p$ and conservation of mass ${\nabla}{\cdot}u=f$. A very natural mixed finite volume method for this system is to seek the pressure in the nonconforming P1 space and the Darcy velocity in the lowest order Raviart-Thomas space. The equations for these variables are obtained by integrating the two first order systems over the triangular volumes. In this paper we show that such a method is really a standard finite element method with local recovery of the flux in disguise. As a consequence, we compare two approaches in analyzing finite volume methods (FVM) and shed light on the proper way of analyzing non co-volume type of FVM. Numerical results for Dirichlet and Neumann problems are included.
