The pathobiologic process of arterial stenosis following balloon angioplasty continues to be an enigmatic problem in clinical settings. This study investigates the ability of demethoxycurcumin, a curcuminoid isolated from Radix Curcumae, to attenuate balloon injury-induced neointima(NI) formation in the rat carotid artery. It was found that demethoxycurcumin induced inducible heme oxygenase(HO-1) expression and inhibited dose-dependently cellular proliferation in rat vascular smooth muscle cells. Perivascular application of demethoxycurcumin immediately following injury significantly reduced NI area and NI thickness 2 weeks post-injury. Interestingly, treatment with tin-protoporphyrin IX, a HO inhibitor, reversed the effects of demethoxycurcumin on NI formation. These results implicate demethoxycurcumin as a potent new therapeutic agent that is capable of reducing post-angioplasty arterial stenosis through induction of the HO-1 expression.

「포스트모던」시대의 영미문학의 이해

We live in an age when labels beginning with "post-" are prevalent: Post-Structuralism, Post-Industrial age, Post-Marxism, Post-Feminism, Post-modernism, and so on. The prefix "post-" in this case simply designates a time span "after" something. Postmodernism, in this respect, simply designates a trend which comes "after" Modernism, and does not say whether Postmodernism is a continuation or break of Modernism. How can we, then, define postmodernism? Postmodernism, unlike many other -isms, defies definition, because it is not a definite ideology or manifesto initiated by anybody but a life style(or way of life) after modernism. The closest thing to a definition of postmodernism, however, would be to say that the modern age is over and done with. In this sense, postmodernism can be vaguely defined as something opposed to what modernism stands for. In this context, such privileged terms as authority. (of the author), presence, origin, and logos in modernism have been levelled down in postmodernism. In place of these terms, we have a free play of marginality, otherness, and absence. One dominant characteristics of postmodernist readings of literature is the imposibility of only one correct reading of literature. One good example of this phenomenon is found in the feminist reading of literature. By toppling the dominant value of phallogocentricism, the femininst reading draws on many approaches available to reading literature: deconstruction, Foucaultian orientation, Marxism, Oriental thought, and so on. Postmodernist readings of literature have opened up new and vast horizons for a variety of exhilerating and innovative understandings of literature.

3차 Cumulant를 이용한 블라인드 등화 알고리즘의 성능분석

본 논문에서는 고차 통계인 3차 cumulant에 근거한 기존의 블라인드 등화 알고리즘을 개선한 새로운 방법을 제안하였다. 제안된 알고리즘은 블럭 단위로 3차 cumulant를 추정하는 현재의 방식과는 달리, 매 샘플 단위로 이를 계산하여 적은 양의 데이터를 가지고도 빠른 수렴속도와 우수한 수렴특성을 보인다. 특히 데이터의 전송 중 채널의 특성이 변하는 Nonstationary 환경에서는 3차 cumulant를 추정하는데 빠른 수렴속도가 요구되고, 따라서 이 경우 제안된 알고리즘은 매우 유용하게 적용될 수 있다. 제안된 알고리즘의 유용성을 검증하기 위하여 컴퓨터 모의실험을 수행하였으며, 선형 시불변이고 비최소 위상을 갖는 채널 모델과 4-ary PAM 신호에 대해 제안된 알고리즘의 우수성을 확인하였다.

모순어법에 대한 포스트모던적 조명

One of the most basic assumptions of the Western thought has been that anything or everything can be explained through logos, or reason. This attitude can be termed an logocentrism in the sense that this paradigm is soley based on logos. What logos has been doing in the West is quite interesting. First of all, it has been trying to categorize very neatly things in the world that defy both ceatness and categorization. The world out there is sometimes a jumble of things that are simply beyond the grasp of the reasoning power. When things cannot be categorized neatly, then reason represses and oppresses the elements that do not obey the dicatatorial sweep of reason. In a word, logocentrism is a very cruel way of suppressing the un-reasonable. Categories like oxymoron, irony, paradox, and the like are not compatible with logocentric ways of doing things. These terms have in common de-centered-ness as their distinguishing characteristics. The oxymoronic expression, "pleasing pains," for example, has a de-centering barrier in its midst. There is no logical or reasonable connection between the two constituting elements of this expression. This element of unreasonable discontiguity in oxymoronic expressions has long baffled many New Critics, even though they very much liked paradox as a literary device. Then comes along postmodernism. Postmodernism thrives on disconnections and un reasonable-ness. It does not theorize about things irrational but lets they be as they are. A new liik at oxymoron, then, is in oredr, afforded by a new way of looking at things from a postmodernistic point of view. This new way of looking at oxymoronic expressions and situations can be both stimulating and exhilerating, eliminating the stranglehold placed on them by the long-stabding logocentric tendency of New Criticism.

영국 낭만시의 특질 : 영국 낭만시의 존재론적 인식론

This paper proposes to investigate the characteristics of English romantic poetry from an ontological and epistemological point of view. English Romantic Poetry is a by-product of divergent changes taking place in political systems and social structures in the early Nineteenth Century England, which has witnessed a series of revolutions in Europe and America: the American Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, the French Revolution, and others. These revolutions, however, are not the pace-setters for social changes; they are rather the result and reflection of the changes that have been and are still going on in various fields of society. One significant aspect of this change is found in man`s changed perception of himself, his society, and the universe. Social and political relationships have been so far seen in terms of vertical hierachy, with the king at the top and the common people at the bottom. Political revolutions have brought about a change in man's perception of this fixed vertical hierarchy opening the way to an open and horizontal relationship based on equality and freedom of man. Philosophers and their theories that have enabled these changes to take place have been examined: empiricism, transendentalism, J.J. Rousseau, William Godwim, among others. Romantic theories of the imagination proposed by different Romantic poets such as Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Shelley, and Byron have been examined in this paper, because a proper understanding of Romantic poets and their poetry cannot be achieved without understanding their theories of the imagination and their practices of it.

'The Dead'의 Gretta Conroy에 대해서

조이스의 작품세계가 모순 속에서 진리를 찾게 되는 역설의 세계라는 것은 여성에 대한 다음과 같은 그의 태도에서도 알려져 있다. "Joyce's true attitude can only be described as ambiguous: Molly is both earth-mother and infertile, goddess and bitch." Virgin인 동시에 temptress, 창조인 동시에 파괴 그리고 감취와 부정을 겸하고 있는 것이 조이스의 여성상이다. The Portrait에서 여성의 이미지를 Virgin, mercedes, Emma, a prositute 그리고 bat like soul 등을 통해 작품의 여러곳에 산재시켜 두었다가 이 모든 국면이 the beach girl에서 집약되어 있다. 마찬가지로 작품 저변에 점철되어 있는 Gretta의 속성 역시 the beach girl처럼 가브리엘이 self-revelation을 하는 순간에 결정적인 역할을 하게 된다. 생사일치, 성속일치를 지니고서 inspiration의 원천이라 할 수 있는 Gratta는 도피도 부정도 할 수 없는 현실의 갖가지 양상 속에 내포된 인생의 진의를 깨닫게 해준다.

격변기의 가치관의 혼란과 T.S. Eliot의 신비주의

T.S. Eliot, a major Twentieth-Century English poet, has witnessed and lived through the cataclysmic changes represented and caused by the two World Wars. These turbulent times have caused him to see through the futility of human existence in the spiritual Waste Land of his own making and search for meaning in life. His tendency to search for meaning takes on the quality of mysticism. In this paper I try to show that Eliot`s mystical tendency is a major factor throughout his life and is found in many of his works. In the early stages of the development, his mystical tendency finds its way in his critical concepts such as objective correlative, immediate experience, and the impersonality of poetry. What he wants to do in these concepts is to spatialize, visualize, and fix time through concept in that tradition presupposes synchronic existence of the past in the present. His later ideas such as still point and pattern, however, are contingent upon the idea of the Incarnation of Christ in time, and in this respect they are qualitatively different from his earlier critical concepts. In his later stage, Eliot sees the importance of history as a meeting of time with the timeless in pattern and still point. This is possible only through the mediation of the Incarnated Christ. These ideas are very clearly shown in Murder in the Cathedral and Four Quartets. Even though Eliot`s Christian mystical element is prominent in his later period (especially after his conversion to Anglican Church in 1927), we should not overlook the importance of the Oriental influences in his mystical tendency. For instance, the absence of ego (self) found in his impersonal theory of poetry in the early stage of his life is still found in his later poem Four Quartets. This means that the Buddhistic and Hinduistic elements have stayed with him throughout his life. We should also remember that mysticism to Eliot is not rejecting this world and seeking after refuge in the other world. His mysticism is firmly based on "here" and "now", and this "here" and "now" is the backbone of his "always". The fact that he uses concrete images throughout his poetry bears this out.

문화 자본으로 몸값 올리기 : 『오만과 편견』에 나타난 자본

Jane Austin is a great story teller, and the theme of her novels is generally considered to be concerned with the complicated courtship between young women of lower class and men from the affluent class. Readers of her novels, therefore, do not generally expect much except the unravelling of the courtship process. This kind of simplified understanding of her novels, however, is no more than a very superficial interpretation of her novels. The fact that her novels do not very much go beyond the family situations is considerably contrituting to this kind of misunderstanding about the theme of her novels. There is more to her novels than this. Even though Auten mainly describes domestic circumstances in her novels, we should not be fooled into thinking that she is mainly concerned with courtship process in her novels. What I am trying to demonstrate in this essay is that under the seemingly simple and unproblematic descriptions in her novels we could find the complicated and dynamic workings of the capital. We can see this very clearly in her, Pride and Prejudice. In order to understand the role of the capital it is very important to know what Pierre Bourdieu means by habitue and cultural capital. Bourdieu defines habitue as "the system of durable, transposahle dispositions, structured structures predisposed to function as structuring structures." What he means is that habitus is the generating principle of behavior embodied in the unconscious, The habitus, therefore, is the invisible basis of the cultural capital, which Bourdieu maintains is as important as economic capital. Cultural capital can be defined as "the possession of knowledge, accomplishments, formal and informal qualifications by which an individual may gain entry and secure a position in particular social circles." By inheriting the habitus from her father and accumulating cultural capital all by herself, Elizabeth gains acceptance by and eventually marries Darcy, This marriage, however, is not simply a marriage of hearts only. What is important is that Elizabeth has raised the valve of her own meager dowry by cultural capital. Her marriage, in this sense, is also the marriage of capitals: the monetary capital of Darcy and the cultural capital of Elizabeth. The marriage as merger of these two different kinds of capitals makes it economically sound and secure far both parties involved and there is plenty of indication that it will be viable on a sound basis in the future.

IC 실현에 적합한 정현파 능동 발진기의 회로 및 특성에 관한 연구(Ⅱ)

Two kinds of simple active oscillators are proposed and analyzed assuming that operational amplifier has two-poles frequency characteristics. The first circuit is composed of one operational amplifier, one resistor and one grounded capacitor. The second oscillator is realized with one operational amplifier and three resitors. Proposed oscillators have the low sensitivity of the oscillation frequency for little variations of the passive element values. By the experimental results obtained with Op-Amp.?A741, the simple oscillators can be useful for the frequency range 1.25 KHz≤f? ≤400KHz for the active -R ocillator, and it is shown to transform the active-R oscillator circuit into the voltage controlled type.Therefore, two kinds of oscillators circuit are attractive for the IC realization, because they hve one operational amplifier, one resistor and one grounded capacitor, or three resistors.
