Romanization and Language Planning in Taiwan
Chiung, Wi-vun Taiffalo 대한언어학회 2001 언어학 Vol.9 No.1
Chiung, Wi-run Taiffalo. 2001. Romanization and Language Planningin Taiwan. The Linguistic Association, of Korea Journal 9(1), 15-43.Although Taiwan is currently a Hancha (Han characters)-dominated society, romanization was in fact the first writing system used in Taiwan. The first romanized orthography is the Sinkang manuscripts introduced by the Dutch missionaries in the first half of the seventeenth century. Thereafter, Han characters were imposed to Taiwan by the Sinitic Koxinga regime that followed in the second half of the seventeenth century. As the number of Han immigrants from China dramatically increased, Han characters gradually became the dominant writing system. At present, romanization for Mandarin Chinese is an auxiliary script simply used for transliteration purpose. As for Taiwanese romanization it is mainly used by particular groups, such as church followers and the Taiwanese writing circle. This paper provides readers an overall introduction to the history and current development of romanization in Taiwan from the perspectives of literacy and sociolinguistics.(The University of Texas at Arlington)
Redefining Asian Masculinity in the Age of Global Media
Chiung Hwang Chen,Ethan Yorgason 한국언론학회 2018 Asian Communication Research Vol.15 No.2
This article examines American/transnational perceptions of Asian manhood through Asian popular culture. Specifically, it asks whether Korean dramas, with their emphasis on powerfully attractive male stars are changing long-standing stereotypes of Asian men’s relatively weak masculinity. It provides a unique contribution by using a survey we created to compare views of Asian masculinity among women who consume Korean dramas to those who do not. The results show a strong correlation between Korean drama viewing and perceptions of Asian masculinity and attractiveness. Viewers rate these more highly than non-viewers do. Black and Latina viewers differ especially strongly in comparison to their non-viewing counterparts. However, stereotypes persist. In comparison to men of other ethnicities, Asian men are still placed at the bottom of the masculinity ladder. A low view of Asian men’s masculinity and attractiveness is particularly notable among Polynesian women; but Caucasian and, perhaps surprisingly, Asian women also hold dim views of Asian men in certain ways. Thus Korean drama exposure is associated with destabilized conventions, but only to a limited degree.

A 28-year-old female with a 1-year history of ketamine abuse developed ketamine-associated urinary symptoms that were refractory to conservative treatment after the complete cessation of ketamine use. Smooth voiding with increased bladder capacity and minimal postvoid residual urine volume were achieved by performing an augmentation enterocystoplasty. An uneventful pregnancy with the vaginal delivery of a healthy baby occurred postoperatively.

This paper analyzes the relationship between labor productivity and team performance by using the National Football League (NFL) data between 1994-1995 and 2008-2009 seasons. In order to do this, we collect statistical data from two major web-sites as of nfl.com and pro-football-reference.com, and utilize a methodology of Poisson regression model because we have count data. The dependent variable is a winning percentage and independent variables are player performance in offense and defense indicating labor productivity. From the empirical analysis, we found the number of independent variables has positive impacts on team performance. Thus, we can conclude that there exists a positive relationship between labor productivity and team (organizational) performance. In addition, we can conclude that the quarterback`s performance is a statistically significant determinant of team performance.
Embedded Relationality and Role : History and Hierarchy in Vietnam’s China Policy
Chiung-Chiu Huang 한국정치학회 2017 한국정치학회보 Vol.51 No.6
Relationality as the status and process of interaction among actors in a given arena is the premise of individual actor’s decision making and practices of its role(s) in either a bilateral or multilateral relationships. This article assumes that the historical memory and political ideology, as well as the structural restraints, with the representation of state’s role conception(s), are crucial factors shaping the relationality in its interpretation and manipulation of relationships with other actors. This article investigates Vietnam’s relationship with China from the abovementioned angle and argues that Hanoi holds an intrinsic mentality which is the mixture of historical legacies, including East Asian tribute system and the indigenous characteristic of socialist comradeship. Such a complicated mentality of Vietnam in managing relationship with China is better analyzed through the metaphor of role: the vassal state. The main argument of this article focuses on how the vassal state role has guided Hanoi to act and respond to many episodes occurring in the bilateral relationship with Beijing.
