Li, Zile,Dai, Qi,Mehmood, Muhammad Q.,Hu, Guangwei,yanchuk, Boris Luk’,Tao, Jin,Hao, Chenglong,Kim, Inki,Jeong, Heonyeong,Zheng, Guoxing,Yu, Shaohua,Alù,, Andrea,Rho, Junsuk,Qiu, Cheng-Wei Nature Publishing Group UK 2018 Light, science & applications Vol.7 No.1
<▼1>
With the rapid progress in computer science, including artificial intelligence, big data and cloud computing, full-space spot generation can be pivotal to many practical applications, such as facial recognition, motion detection, augmented reality, etc. These opportunities may be achieved by using diffractive optical elements (DOEs) or light detection and ranging (LIDAR). However, DOEs suffer from intrinsic limitations, such as demanding depth-controlled fabrication techniques, large thicknesses (more than the wavelength), Lambertian operation only in half space, etc. LIDAR nevertheless relies on complex and bulky scanning systems, which hinders the miniaturization of the spot generator. Here, inspired by a Lambertian scatterer, we report a Hermitian-conjugate metasurface scrambling the incident light to a cloud of random points in full space with compressed information density, functioning in both transmission and reflection spaces. Over 4044 random spots are experimentally observed in the entire space, covering angles at nearly 90°. Our scrambling metasurface is made of amorphous silicon with a uniform subwavelength height, a nearly continuous phase coverage, a lightweight, flexible design, and low-heat dissipation. Thus, it may be mass produced by and integrated into existing semiconductor foundry designs. Our work opens important directions for emerging 3D recognition sensors, such as motion sensing, facial recognition, and other applications.
</▼1><▼2>
Metasurfaces: scrambling light for 3D detection and recognition

Firing light at a manufactured 'metasurface'—one carrying patterns at a smaller scale than the wavelength of the light—fills large volumes of space with defined points of light, potentially improving 3-D recognition and sensor applications. Cheng-Wei Qui and colleagues at the National University of Singapore, with co-workers across Asia and in the USA, created their unique metasurface from amorphous silicon. Light is scattered from and transmitted through the material to generate a cloud of data points in the surrounding space in which the structure and motion of objects under study can be analyzed. The initial development work with this “scrambling metasurface” suggests it could improve pattern recognition, including face recognition, motion detection and augmented reality applications. The researchers describe how their innovation overcomes significant limitations of existing methods in these fields.
</▼2>
Sperm maturation screening and the effect of ecdysone on sperm development of silkworm Bombyx mori
Cheng Hao,Wang Yanyan,Chang Meiling,Zhang Kun,Cai Zhiyan,Qian Yuxin,Li Dandan 한국응용곤충학회 2022 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.25 No.2
There are two sperm morphs of silkworm, the nucleated spermatozoa (eupyrene) and anucleated spermatozoa (apyrene). Eupyrene sperm cannot complete fertilization successfully without the apyrene sperm. Here a modified rapid and efficient method for sperm identification was developed, after 10 s of fixation in para formaldehyde and 30 s of 4 ′ 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) or propidium Iodide (PI) staining, the sperm bundles can be detected easily using a fluorescence microscope. Sperm maturation process of silkworm from the fifth instar larvae to the adult was described with the above method, the precise time of earliest elongate apyrene bundles was detected on day 2 of pre-pupation, with a ratio of 5% in total sperm bundles, after which the percentage of apyrene sperm bundles increased rapidly and attained a relatively stable ratio of 75% at the end of pupation and nearly 80% after eclosion. Delayed mating leads to apyrene sperm accumulation and damaged fertilization. Previous study showed that ecdysone can increase the frequency of apyrene sperm bundles in vitro. Here 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) was injected into hemolymph of the 2-d-old fifth instar larvae, the worms entered into mounting period after three days injection, but no apyrene sperm bundles were induced unless day 2 of pre-pupation. Interestingly, maturation of eupyrene sperm bundles were accelerated, and the ratio of eupyrene sperm bundles increased and exhibited a dose-dependent effect after 20E injection, which indicated that the development of eupyrene sperm can be accelerated by ecdysone before pupation of silkworm in vivo. These results will provide new clues for lepidopteran pest control.

Cheng, Hao,Hill, Paulina S.,Siegwart, Daniel J.,Vacanti, Nathaniel,Lytton‐,Jean, Abigail K. R.,Cho, Seung‐,Woo,Ye, Anne,Langer, Robert,Anderson, Daniel G. WILEY‐VCH Verlag 2011 ADVANCED MATERIALS Vol.23 No.12

Biodegradable elastomeric materials have particular utility in tissue engineering applications because their compliance under force closely resembles the elastic nature of many human tissues. A family of biodegradable poly(ester amide) elastomers were developed, with excellent elasticity under hydrated conditions, good in vivo biocompatibility and a slow degradation rate. This study sheds light on the structure‐property relationship behind designing biodegradable elastomeric materials.

Journey to the West: Overseas Exchange Program of Chinese Campus Football
( Hao Cheng ),( Zhen Shen ) 한국체육학회 2015 국제스포츠과학 학술대회 Vol.2015 No.1
Introduction: The sport of football in China in 90s has gone through a phase of professional revolution, while negative practices such as match fixing was rampant. After much remediation, football in Chinese has been cleansed. According to statistics, there were only 6972 registered professional football players in 2009. The foundation of Chinese football was weak. In the same year, the national youth football program was introduced. To increase the pace of development in campus football; to promote the setting up of a competent coaching staff; to enhance the level of coaching and physical education in football, a memorandum of understanding was signed in September 2014 between China and France. This was very well supported by the Departmernt of International Cooperation and Exchanges of the Ministry of Education and China Scholarship Council, and Federation of University Sports of China (FUSC) as well. The plan was to send football coaches from the schools to France for training starting from 2015. This is the largest overseas exchange program in China till date. This is strongly supported by Deputy Prime Minister LIU Yandong and the French Embassy in China. CUPES has been identified as the institution to spearhead this project. Results: Between September and November in 2015, 240 football coaches and physical teachers from various schools will be sent to France for training in the sport of football. Prior to departure, they will spend a week undergoing preparation work in the area of team-building, culture, language, customs and basic football theory. Conclusion: During the exchange program in France, participants will be involved in 300 hours of lessons - 6 hours a day, 30 hours a week. There will 172 hours of theory and 108 hours of practical sessions. In addition, there will be 20 hours of French culture appreciation. Lessons will cover basic theory, tactics, sports psychology, exercise physiology, recovery, nutrition, coaching and venue planning.

In this study, we evaluated whether the oral administration of chondroitin from the cartilage of Raja kenojei is effective on the progression of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), using collagen-induced arthritic (CIA) mice. Arthritis development was delayed dose-dependently in the chondroitin-treated groups. The pre- and late-treated groups receiving 1,000 mg/kg of chondroitin had clinical scores that were reduced significantly by 56.9 (p<0.05) and 43.3% (p<0.05), respectively, compared to the vehicle-treated groups. Hematoxylin eosin staining and X-ray radiography showed that the chondroitins reduced the infiltration of inflammatory cells and prevented joint destruction of the knee and paw. Reverse transcription-polyerase chain reaction analysis revealed that chondroitin administration inhibited the expressions of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interlukin-1β (IL-1β), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in joints more than the administration of vehicle. Chondroitin treatment also decreased the production of rheumatoid factors (RF), IgG and IgM, in the serum of CIA mice. These results indicate that chondroitin administration has a protective effect involving the inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokine production in CIA mice.
