Automated optimization of formwork design through spatial analysis in building information modeling
Hyun, Changtaek,Jin, Chengquan,Shen, Zhenhua,Kim, Hyunjoo Elsevier 2018 AUTOMATION IN CONSTRUCTION - Vol.95 No.-

Abstract

Formwork construction for reinforced cast-in-place concrete work is costly, often time-consuming and complex to plan and design. Even though the process of calculating the proper formwork design is lengthy and complex, the responsibility is usually left to a field manager/engineer which may not have enough time and resources identifying all possible options to select the most effective formwork.

The design aspects that go into formwork include several parameters such as concrete pressure, bending, deflection, and horizontal shearing. Even though there are equations and calculations for each of those parameters in the design of concrete formwork, the process of performing the calculations for each concrete formwork application is still lengthy. Therefore, construction managers often rely on their previous work experiences and apply similar formwork designs for most situations.

By developing a BIM (Building Information Modeling) based automatic formwork design system, this research aims to optimize the formwork design process required to perform the calculations for the design of the formwork by automatically extracting the properties and data from a BIM model. The case study shows that the proposed formwork design approach successfully automates the formwork design in BIM modeling using IFC extension by comparing the different materials and costs. The result of the case study reveals that the efficiency of the formwork design process could be greatly improved by utilizing the proposed formwork design system.

Highlights

The paper is to improve the design of the formwork for reinforced cast-in-concrete work.

The research demonstrates a BIM based automatic formwork design procedure in optimizing its process.

This research proposes three new entries in the current IFC schema for concrete formwork design simulations.

The DOUBLETIME protein kinase regulates phosphorylation of the Drosophila PDP1&egr;

Abstract

Reversible phosphorylation of clock proteins plays an important role in circadian timekeeping as it is a key post-translational mechanism that regulates the activity, stability and subcellular localization of core clock proteins. The kinase DOUBLETIME (DBT), a Drosophila ortholog of mammalian casein kinase I&egr;, regulates circadian phosphorylation of two essential clock proteins, PERIOD and dCLOCK. We present evidence that Par Domain Protein 1&egr; (PDP1&egr;), a transcription factor and mediator of clock output in Drosophila, is phosphorylated in vivo and in cultured cells by DBT activity. We also demonstrate that DBT interacts with PDP1&egr; and promotes its degradation by the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway in cultured cells. In addition, PDP1&egr; nuclear localization is decreased by dbt RNA interference in S2 cell system. These results suggest that DBT regulates phosphorylation, stability and localization of PDP1&egr;, and that it has multiple targets in the Drosophila circadian system.

Functional Role of CREB-Binding Protein in the Circadian Clock System of Drosophila melanogaster

ABSTRACT
Rhythmic histone acetylation underlies the oscillating expression of clock genes in the mammalian circadian clock system. Cellular factors that contain histone acetyltransferase and histone deacetylase activity have been implicated in these processes by direct interactions with clock genes, but their functional relevance remains to be assessed by use of appropriate animal models. Here, using transgenic fly models, we show that CREB-binding protein (CBP) participates in the transcriptional regulation of the Drosophila CLOCK/CYCLE (dCLK/CYC) heterodimer. CBP knockdown in pigment dispersing factor-expressing cells lengthens the period of adult locomotor rhythm with the prolonged expression of period and timeless genes, while CBP overexpression in timeless-expressing cells causes arrhythmic circadian behaviors with the impaired expression of these dCLK/CYC-induced clock genes. In contrast to the mammalian circadian clock system, CBP overexpression attenuates the transcriptional activity of the dCLK/CYC heterodimer in cultured cells, possibly by targeting the PER-ARNT-SIM domain of dCLK. Our data suggest that the Drosophila circadian clock system has evolved a distinct mechanism to tightly regulate the robust transcriptional potency of the dCLK/CYC heterodimer.

Design-build projects were devised to enhance the design technologies of the domestic construction industry and the efficiency of public works, contributing greatly to the development of construction technologies. However, as various stages of the process, such as formulation of basic plans and design documents, and deliberations proceed, claims, including changes in the requirements of clients, and design changes occur. These claims result in the delay in construction and an increase in construction costs. In this regard, this study attempted to identify main claims that delay construction and increase the costs of design-build projects, prevent claims in the future, and improve the efficiency of project implementation.

Recently, it has been getting an increasing attention to develop a digital twin system that can provide spatial information and services of a smart city through a Web service, and building a digital twin system with IFC-CityGML integrated data has been the most desirable approach. However, due to the heavy computing load and technical difficulties to process the IFC-CityGML integrated data, such a system is not appropriate to provide various smart city services to the unspecified public as a Web service. To address the issue, the study proposes a method that uses a lightweight 3D object model and a game engine. The method is able to not only develop a Web-based digital twin system efficiently, but also run physical simulations by using the game engine, the reality level of which is difficult to achieve with a common web 3D visualization engine. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been verified through a case study of fire emergency management that implements a digital twin system in LOD 3.5 and simulates the shortest evacuation route.

VE is one of the most effective technologies to increase the value of construction projects. In the VE process, the VE team decides whether to select and adopt the VE alternative through the process of reviewing its applicability with the decision-maker, the client, and the original design team. In this important process, there are difficulties such as reviewing floorplan information, material, quality information, and clash detection. In addition, communication and information delivery between VE participants is inefficient due to several reasons such as lack of owner’s understanding regarding the VE alternative and insufficient consideration of harmony between the alternative and it’s surrounding. In order to improve this, there is a need for improvement in reviewing the applicability of VE alternatives while effectively exchanging its related information among VE participants. Thus, in this study, the problem of applicability review of VE alternatives was derived through the analysis of prior research. Accordingly, the reasons for rejecting other VE alternatives were identified, suggesting an improvement in reviewing the applicability of VE alternatives using BIM-based VR.
