      • Impacts and Countermeasures of Climate Change on Food Supply

        Climate change has become a megatrend that will lead to significant changes in future society. Korean and overseas agencies specializing in climate forecasts predict that average global temperatures will continue to rise. While climate change may potentially have certain positive impacts for crop yields, the overall impact is predicted to be negative for environment and food security. In this context, our study aims to suggest a plan for systematically establishing a stable food supply system in Korea in respose to climate change. Various analytical models were employed, including: a response analysis based on questionnaire for farmers, panel-based analysis of the causes of pests and diseases in rice production, a random-effects model for panel data of extreme weather impact, and an analysis of food supply effects using the Simulation Model for Climate-Agriculture Relations (SIMCAR) integrated model in conjunction with the Crop Estimation through Resource and Environment Synthesis (CERES) model of the Korea Agricultural Simulation Model (KASMO). An analysis was made of major grain yields by means of the KREI-KASMO. This revealed reduced yields and area in comparison with the baseline in 2050, resulting in a reduction of rice production by 17.8%p in the RCP8.5 scenario, and reduction of soybean by 21.2%p and reduction of barley by 13.7%p in the A2 scenario. Self-sufficiency ratio of major grains in 2050 drawn from the SIMCAR revealed that the climate change scenario for rice showed 55.0% to be reduced by 18.3% in comparison with the baseline. It is predicted that selfsufficiency ratio in rice will drop to 50% which means a half of consumed rice should be imported. Key tasks for building a stable food supply system to cope with climate change were developed based on the domestic production capacity, the buffering capacity to climate change, import capacity from other countries, and policy performance capacity with reference to the empirical analysis. First, the suggested key tasks for improving the domestic production capacity include developing and disseminating adaptation technology, conserving farmland and expanding arable land, practicing climate-smart agriculture by using fusion technology, and modernizing infrastructure for agriculture. Second, key tasks for improving buffering capacity to climate change are improving resilience and biodiversity, building a risk management system, and further improving storage of food in Korea and other countries. Third, major tasks for improving the import capacity from other countries are constructing overseas food bases, effectively using the international grain market, and enhancing international cooperation with relevant countries. Finally, key tasks for improving policy performance capacity are refining and applying the climate change impact analysis model with respect to policies, expanding investments in research and development, building a vulnerability assessment system, enhancing education and training, and installing Climate Change Response Center for Agriculture (tentative). In this study, several key challenges were presented in the four different areas related to building a stable food supply system which can help overcome the challenges of climate change. It is expected that the nature of the policies that need to be prioritized and promoted, given the constraints of budget, organization and information will be addressed in future research. Also, in order for the solutions for key challenges to work properly in the field such that policy outcomes will be maximized, a consortium of research bodies in the related fields of agriculture, agricultural meteorology and agricultural economics should be created. Furthermore, follow-up studies should be conducted to verify the expenses required for developing reliable climate change impact assessment models and the effectiveness of the enforced policies.         해도분석을 통한 낙동강 하구 사주 면적의 시ㆍ공간 변화

        This study discusses characteristic of spatiotemporal changes of the sand barrier in the Nakdong estuarine for the last century, focusing on geomorphologic evolution and mobility of sand barriers in the view of coastal engineering. The Nakdong estuarine, the research subject, has a complexly changing natural environment by interaction between ground and marine elements such as ocean wave, tidal current, sediment, etc. Moreover, recently, unnatural geomorphologic changes (e.g., seaside reclamation, new harbor construction, etc.) has been radically increased in this area with increasing desire for coastal development. Because of this, its sand barrier has developed quite unstable condition. Therefore, to identify the development process of geomorphologic changes in this area, required is a close examination on historical characteristics of spatiotemporal changes of the sand barrier in relation to surrounding seaside reclamation and physical environmental changes. This study, based on the marine charts published in between 1927 and 1995 year, analyzes the length and area of the sand barrier for the last hundred years, and investigates the cause of the changes by looking into the change of water depth for the last two years and doing ocean-physical site observations. In conclusion, the sand barrier of the Nakdong estuarine expands toward the open sea by 7.4~26 m in annual average, maintaining a fixed distance of 1,241~1.279 m, and its area is expected to increase about 2.8 k㎡ annually. This is characterized by the wocean wave from the open sea and the discharge of Nakdong River.

        이슈네트워크의 변화와 환경규제정책변동 - 황령산 개발 이슈의 분석

          본 연구는 이슈네트워크의 변화와 환경규제정책변동과의 관계를 규명하기 위해 1992년 이후 현재까지 부산광역시 황령산 개발사례를 분석하였다. 본 사례에서 정책행위자들의 상호작용구조, 즉 이슈네트워크의 변화는 환경규제의 완화와 강화에 직접적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 각 시기별 정책변동에 있어서 부산시와 기업의 관계가 매우 긴밀한 전략적 관계를 형성하고 다른 행위자들의 관계가 느슨하고 영향력이 약할 때, 이는 곧 개발의 진행을 가능하게 하는 환경규제완화에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 환경단체와 주민모임이 긴밀하고 협력적인 관계를 형성하고 여기에 정치인이 가세할 때 개발을 보류시키는 환경규제 강화가 나타났다. 이처럼 이슈네트워크는 참여자들의 관계구조가 매우 유동적인 경우에 정책변동을 설명하는 유력한 분석틀이며, 민주화된 상황에서 관련 정보가 공개되고 공유되면서 사회적 합의를 이루어내는 유용한 도구로 평가되었다. 그리고 관련 정책이슈가 등장했을 때 이슈네트워크의 형성은 바람직한 정책변동을 유도할 가능성이 높기 때문에 정책행위자들은 개방적인 이슈네트워크의 형성에 관심을 가져야 함을 제안하였다.   This research looks at the relationship between the structures of interaction among policy actors, that is, the issue network and the environmental regulatory policy change. The cases which are used in this paper are the spa development and the interior ski dome construction on Hwanglyoung Mountain that took place from 1992 to 2006.<BR>  In this research, those cases are divided into three periods; the beginning of development, the suspension of development, and the time proceeding development at each period. What is analyzed is how the interaction structure change of policy actors affected the policy change.<BR>  We found that at each period, the changes in the issue network determined by the interaction degree of policy actors had considerable influence on the regulatory policy change. So we suggested that policy actors of issue networks should participate in policy issues positively for the desirable policy change.

        아세틸 콜린 유발 검사시 허혈성 심전도 변화와 흉통의 발생이 내피세포 기능장애에 미치는 영향

        연구배경: 아세틸 콜린 유발 검사시 발생하는 흉통과 허혈성 심전도 변화가 아세틸 콜린에 의해 발생하는 관상동맥의 내피세포 기능에 어떤 영향을 주는지 알아보고자 했다. 방법: 흉통으로 내원하여 관상동맥 조영술과 아세틸 콜린 유발검사를 시행받은 1,085명의 환자를 대상으로 하였다. 아세틸 콜린 유발 검사를 하는 동안 허혈성 심전도 변화 및 흉통의 발생 유무에 따른 관상동맥 내피세포 기능의 특징을 비교하였다. 결과: 539명의 환자에서 아세틸 콜린 검사시 내피세포 기능 장애가 발생 하였다. 허혈성 심전도 변화가 있었던 그룹이 심전도 변화가 없었던 그룹보다 흉통이 더 많았고(78.1% vs. 60.8%, P=0.007), 관상동맥 조영술상 다발성 관상동맥 경련이 빈번하였고(59.4% vs. 40.6%, P=0.004), 관상동맥의 경련 정도도 더 심하였다(64.1% vs. 46.5%, P=0.006). 흉통이 있었던 그룹이 흉통이 없었던 그룹보다 허혈성 심전도 변화의 빈도가 더 높았다(14.7% vs. 7.5%, P=0.007). 또한 흉통이 있었던 그룹이 관상동맥 경련이 다발성으로 발생하는 경우가 많았고 (50.7% vs. 29.5%, P<0.001), 미만성으로 발생하는 경우가 많았고(87.1% vs. 75%, P<0.001), 관상동맥의 경련의 정도도 더 심하였다(51.6% vs. 43.5%, P=0.041). 결론: 아세틸 콜린 유발검사시 발생하는 허혈성 심전도 변화와 흉통은 관상동맥 경련의 정도와 경련이 발생하는 관상동맥 개수와 연관이 있다. Background: ECG changes and chest pain during acetylcholine (Ach) provocation tests may constitute important clinical parameters for Ach-induced endothelial dysfunction. We investigated the association between ischemic ECG changes and chest pain during the Ach-provocation test and angiographic characteristics of Ach-induced endothelial dysfunction. Methods: A total of 1,085 patients with anginal symptoms underwent diagnostic coronary angiography (CAG) and Ach-provocation tests. We compared angiographic characteristics of Ach-induced endothelial dysfunction according to the presence of ECG change and chest pain. Results: A total of 539 patients experienced Ach-induced endothelial dysfunction. Patients who experienced ECG change group suffered more frequent chest pain (78.1% vs. 60.8%, P=0.007), angiographically more frequent multiple coronary artery spasm (59.4% vs. 40.6%, P=0.004), and more severe coronary artery spasm (64.1% vs. 46.5%, P=0.006) than patients without ECG change. However, there was no difference in the length of endothelial dysfunction between the groups. The incidence of ischemic ECG changes in patients with chest pain was higher than in patients without chest pain (14.7% vs. 7.5%, P=0.007). Patients who experienced chest pain more often experienced multiple (50.7% vs. 29.5%, P<0.001), diffuse (87.1% vs. 75%, P<0.001), and severe coronary artery spasm (51.6% vs. 43.5%, P=0.041) than patients without chest pain. Conclusion: Ischemic ECG changes and chest pain during the Ach-provocation test are associated with multi-vessel involvement and severe coronary artery spasm. Chest pain is associated with the length of endothelial dysfunction, but ischemic ECG change is not.

      • 濟州道 改良草地에 있어서 띠(Imperata cylindrica)의 季節的 年次的 變化

        本 硏究는 濟州道 中山間地帶의 自然草地(Imperata cylindrica/Zoysia japonica type)를 開墾한 後 1 ha當 Dactylis glomerata 17kg, Festuca arundinacea 7kg, Lolium multiflorum 2kg, Trifolium repens 2kg의 導入牧草를 混播(28kg)하여 家畜放牧에 利用되고 있는(1977∼1982年) 改良草地를 對象으로하여, 띠(Imperata cylindrica)植生의 季節的ㆍ年次的變化過程을 調査한 結果를 要約하면 다음과 같다. 1. 每年 季節에 따르는 草長ㆍ收量ㆍ密度ㆍ被度 等 植生의 季節的 變化에 있어서는 秋期에 가장 優勢하였고, 春期에는 低調하게 나타났다. 2. 改良後 年度別 草長의 變化는 1年草地에서 34.26cm이었으나 점차 增加되어 6年草地에서는 49.35cm이었는데, 이 變化狀態의 回歸方程式은 y=-0.13x²+4.41x+28.50이었다. 3. 年數의 經過에 따르는 密度의 變化는 1年草地에서 0.76%였던 것이 年數가 지남에 따라 급격히 增加되어 6年草地에 이르러서는 32.97%로 나타나고 있는데, 이 變化를 y=0.10x²+0.32x-2.30의 回歸方程式으로 表示할 수 있었다. 4. 草地造成 以後 年次別 被度의 變化는 1年草地에서 1.05%, 2年 1.38%, 3年 2.46%, 4年 17.11%, 5年 27.56%, 6年草地에서 36.66%로 每年 增加(y=1.40x²-2.36x+1.39)되었다. 5. 收量의 年次的 變化는 1年草地에서 1.95kg이었으나 年數가 지남에 따라 점차 增加되어 6年草地에서는 1,107.35kg으로 나타났는데, 이 變化狀態를 y=29.11x²+53.52x-154.67로 表示할 수 있었다. This study was conducted to examine the yearly and seasonal changes of Imperata cylindrica on the improved pasture of the mountain districts around Mt. Halla in Cheju Island. For this study, the researcher had investigated for six years from 1977 to 1982 the improved pasture which had been used for grazing from 1977 to 1982. The pasture was reclaimed from native grassland. The mixed seeds of 17kgs' Datylis glomerata, 7kgs' Festuca arundinacea, 2 kgs' Lolium multiflorum and 2kgs' Trifolium repens were sowed per 1 ha. The results of this study are the following : 1. The seasonal changes of Imperata cylindrica : its length, weight, density and coverage are heighest in Autumn, and are lowest in Spring every year. 2. The yearly change in the length of Imperata cylindrica : its length is gradually increased from 34.26 cm in the first year after the reclaimation to 49.35 cm in the 6th year. This change can be represented by the regression equation, Y=-0.13x²+4.41x+28.50. 3. The yearly change in its density : its density is rapidly increased from 0.73% in the first year to 32.97% in the sixth year. The results of this change can be obtained with the regression equation, Y=0.10x²+0.32x-2.30. 4. The yearly change in its coverage : its coverage is increased year by year (1.05% in the 1st year, 1.38% in the 2nd year, 2.46% in the 3rd year, 27.56% in the 5th year, and 36.66% in the 6th year). This change can be calculated with regression equation, Y=1.40x²-2.36x+1.39. 5. The yearly change in its weight : the weight is also increased year after year from 1.95 kg in the first year after reclaimation to 1107.35kg in the sixth year. This change can be calculated with the regression equation of y=29.11x²+53.52x-154.67.

      • Projections of summertime ozone concentration over East Asia under multiple IPCC SRES emission scenarios

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We have developed the Integrated Climate and Air Quality Modeling System (ICAMS) through the one-way nesting of global–regional models to examine the changes in the surface ozone concentrations over East Asia under future climate scenarios. Model simulations have been conducted for the present period of 1996–2005 to evaluate the performance of ICAMS. The simulated surface ozone concentrations reproduced the observed monthly mean concentrations at sites in East Asia with high R<SUP>2</SUP> values (0.4–0.9), indicating a successful simulation to capture both spatial and temporal variability. We then performed several model simulations with the six IPCC SRES scenarios (A2, A1B, A1FI, A1T, B1, and B2) for the next three periods, 2016–2025 (the 2020s), 2046–2055 (the 2050s), and 2091–2100 (the 2090s). The model results show that the projected changes of the annual daily mean maximum eight-hour (DM8H) surface ozone concentrations in summertime for East Asia are in the range of 2–8 ppb, −3 to 8 ppb, and −7 to 9 ppb for the 2020s, the 2050s, and the 2090s, respectively, and are primarily determined based on the emission changes of NO<SUB>x</SUB> and NMVOC. The maximum increases in the annual DM8H surface ozone and high-ozone events occur in the 2020s for all scenarios except for A2, implying that the air quality over East Asia is likely to get worse in the near future period (the 2020s) than in the far future periods (the 2050s and the 2090s). The changes in the future environment based on IPCC SRES scenarios would also influence the change in the occurrences of high-concentrations events more greatly than that of the annual DM8H surface ozone concentrations. Sensitivity simulations show that the emissions increase is the key factor in determining future regional surface ozone concentrations in the case of a developing country, China, whereas a developed country, Japan would be influenced more greatly by effects of the regional climate change than the increase in emissions.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Change in ozone level is determined by the combination of NO<SUB>x</SUB> and NMVOC emissions. </LI> <LI> Ozone level over East Asia would get worse in the near future (the 2020s) than far future. </LI> <LI> A high-concentration event generally increases and more frequently occurs in the future. </LI> <LI> Change in ozone air quality in a developing country depends more on emissions change. </LI> <LI> Change in ozone air quality in a developed country depends more on climate change. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • 고온에서 HAN 계열 추진제 액적의 거동에 대한 연구

        The droplet behavior of 83.9 wt.% HAN water solution was investigated experimentally with various ambient temperature and nitrogen environment. At the initial stage of evaporation under thermal decomposition temperature of HAN, gradual decreasing of droplet diameter was observed. After that, the droplet started to expand due to the internal pressure build up by water nucleation inside the droplet. The micro explosion was observed at higher temperature than the decomposition temperature of HAN and the remaining droplet showed similar behavior of single composition droplet. The decreasing rate was augmented as the ambient temperature increasing.

      • 感染性 疾患의 臨床疫學的 硏究

        The advancement of modern medicine, particularly the application of effective chemotherapeutics and preventive measures, have brought significant changes on the ecological aspect of microbial diseases of man. It was thought worthwhile to study the recent trends and present status of microbial infections in this country. Thus, the relative incidences and their etiological relationships of bacterial species, the pattern of drug sensitivities among the strains, and also the cases diagnosed by the serological methods were studied for the patients of SNU Hospital from January 1963 to December 1967. The results might be summarized as follows; 1. Relationships between bacteria and diseases (1) The species and their relative incidences of bacteria, isolated from various abscess, were α-hemolytic streptococcus 26.6%, Staphyloccus aureus 22.6%, paracolon bacilli 9.9%, coliform bacilli 8.1%, Klebsiella pneumoniae 7.6%, E. coil 6.9%, β-hemolytic streptococcus 5.9%. Staphylococcus albus 3.8%. Proteus 3.8%. Alkaligenes fecalis 2.1%, Diplococcus pneumoniae 1.8% and Pseudomonas aeruginosa 1.6%. (2) The species and their relative incidences of bacteria, isolated from the pyelonephritis cases, were E. coli, 39.5%, coliform bacilli 13.5%, Pseudomonas aeruginosa 9.3%, Proteus 7.4%, Staphylococcus albus 4.6%, α-hemolytic streptococcus 4.6%, Staphylococcus aureus 2.8%, Klebsiella pnemoniae 2.8%, and Alkaligenes fecalis 2.8%. (3) The species and their relative incidences of bacteria, isolated from the osteomyelitis cases, were Staphylococcus aureus 46.5%, β-hemolytic streptococcus 12%, Staphyococcus albus 12%, coliform bacilli 6.9%, α-hemolytic streptococcus 6.9%, paracolon bacilli 5.2% and E. coli 3.5%. (4) The species and their relative incidences of bacteria, isolated from the surgical infections were Staphylococcus aureus 33%, E. coli 15.1%, coliform bacilli 11.6%, Pseudomonas aeruginosa 10.7%, paracolon bacilli 9.8%, Proteus 7.1%, α-hemolytic streptococcus 3.5%, Klebsiella pneumoniae 2.7%, and Alkaligenes fecalis 0.9%. (5) The species and their relative incidences of bacteria, isolated from the pneumonia cases, were Diplococcus pneumoniae 14.4%, Klebsiella pneumoniae 9.6%, Staphylococcus aureus 10.3%, β-hemolytic streptococcus 4.8%, paracolon bacilli 4.8%, E. coli 3.4%, coliform bacilli 3.4%, α-hemolytic streptococcus 34.6% and Staphylococcus albus 13.6%. (6) 44 strains of Salmonella group D were isolated. (7) 207 cases of Salmonella typhosa infections, 39 cases of Salmonella paratyphi A infer ctions and 20 cases of Salmonella paratyphi B infections were diagnosed by Widal. Reactions. (8) No significant change in the yearly pattern between the bacterial species isolated and clinical cases was noticed. 2. Drug-sensitivities of the bacterial strains. (1) Percentage of Staphylococcus aureus strains sensitive to streptomycin, chloramphenicol. Or terramycin appeared to have fluctuated by year. Percentages of the strains sensitive to penicillin, erythromycin albamycin, and kanamycin were 25%, 85%, 99% and 99% respectively, without significant change by year. (2) Perentage of E. coil strain's sensitive to streptomycin, erythromycin, chloramphenicol albamycin and kanamycin were 30%, 9% 70%, and 70% respectively, without significant change by year. Percentage of the strains sensitive to terramjcin decreased from 33.3% in 1963 to 11.6% in 1967 to kanamycin increased from 72% in 1963 to 82% in 1967. None of the strains was sensitive to penicillin. (3) Percentage of proteus strains sensitive to penicillin, terramycin, streptomycin and chloramphenicol were 5%, 3%, 36% and 39%, respectively, without significant change by year. Percentage of the strains sensitive to albamycin decreased from 72.5% in 1963 to 50% in 1967 and to kaiiainycin increased from 72% in 1963 to 82% in 1967. None of the strain was sensitive to erythromycin. (4) Percentage of Pseudomonas strains sensitive to penicillin, streptomycin chloramphenicol, terramycin, erythromycin, albamycin and kanamycin were wider 20% (5) Percentage of coliform bacilli strains sensitive to penicillin, streptomycin, chloramn henicol, terramycin, erythromycin and albamycin were 10%, 24%, 28%, 20% and 10% respectively, without significant change by year. Percentage of the strains sensitive to albamycin appeared to have fluctuated by year. The strains sensitive to kanamycin decreased from 80% in 1963 to 56% in 1967. (6) Pereeentage of paracolon bacilli sensitive to penicillin, streptomycin, chloramphenicol, terrahiycin, erythromycin, kanamycin and albamycin were 3%, 27%, 33%, 20%, 8%, 80% and 65% respectively, without significant change by year.

        Background: Pregnancy affects the course of Graves' Disease (GD), and patients who initially maintain euthyroid function into their middle trimester with minimum doses of antithyroid drugs become exacerbated after delivery. Even patients who are completely cured, requiring no treatment during pregnancy, can relapse after delivery. In this study, we examined the postpartum changes in the thyroid functions of patients with GD, and attempted to determine the factors contributing to these changes. Methods: The study subjects were recruited from pregnant women visiting our outpatient clinic for routine prenatal evaluations. 45 women previously diagnosed with GD, who had been treated and cured with hyperthyroidism, and were no longer taking any thyroid medications, were evaluated for 1 year post delivery. Results: Among 45 patients, 20 (44.4%) developed thyroid disorders following delivery. Postpartum thyroiditis (PPT) developed in 8 patients (17.8%), and GD developed in 12 (26.0%). The onset of the PPT disease 3.1 ± 1.4 months following delivery, which was significantly earlier than the 6.7 ± 2.7 months required for the post delivery onset of GD (p=0.003). The TBII values, measured during the thyrotoxic state in each womaen, were negative in women with PPT and positive in 71.4% of women with GD (p=0.030). The duration of treatment for hyperthyroidism prior or pregnancy, the number of recurrences, and the time interval without treatment, were not associated with the development of postpartum thyroid disorders. Whereas, the mean number of past pregnancies for women who developed PPT was 3.9 ± 2.1, and was significantly higher than the 2.2 ± 1.7 for women developing no thyroid dysfunctions (p=0.044). In 13 women their initial onset of GD occurred within one year postpartum, 7 (53.8%) having had a recurrence, which was significantly higher than in women whose disease onset occurred unrelated to delivery (5 of 32 women: 15.6%). Conclusion: Women with GD developed postpartum thyroid dysfunctions in 44.4% of cases. Women whose initial disease onset occurred within one year postpartum had higher recurrences of GD, and women who developed PPT had a history of higher gravidity compared to the euthyroid women postpartum. Therefore, if women with GD develop postpartum thyroid dysfunctions, the diagnosis should be made, and a treatment modality planned, following careful considerations of the patients' past obstetric history, changes in clinical manifestations and the TBII values

      • 알코홀이 r-GTP 활성에 미치는 인삼의 영향

        This study was carried out to investigate the effects on the changes of the r-glutamyl transpeptidase activity of ethanol-administered white rats. There was classified into group; ethanol treated group(group A), ethanol treated group which was pretreated with ginseng extract(group B), ginseng extract treated group(group C), and ginseng extract treated group which was pretreated with ethanol(group D). White rats of four groups were treated with combined 1% ginseng extract and / or 20% ethanol for 30 days, and were measured the changes of r-GTP activity on the serum, hepatic and renal tissue sample collected at 5 days interval. Following results have been obtained. 1. The changes of serum r-GTP activity were significantly decreased in ethanol treated group B which was pretreated with ginseng extract than in ethanol treated group A. The values were highly significant at the 20th day of feeding. 2. The changes of hepatic r-GTP activity were more increased in group A and decreased in group D. The values were found significantly lowest in 10th and highest in 5th days. 3. The changes of renal r-GTP activity were more increased in group A and decreased in group D. The values were significantly highest in 10th and lowest in 20th days. Based on these results it was found that the changes of r-GTP activity between serum and hepato-renal tissue were exist and the protective action of ginseng against alcohol degradative effects was noted.
