The retention of solutes in reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography depends on their hydrophobicity. Although the retention behaviors of alkyl benzenes have been reported so far, quite a few authors have mentioned the retention behavior of alkyl benzenes with plural hydrophobicity parameters. In this sense, we were interested in the retention behaviors of alkyl benzenes having benzene moiety and increasing alkyl chain. In this study, we therefore investigated the retention behavior of alkyl benzenes in reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography in order to obtain information concerning the effects of the aromatic moiety and the carbon chain on the retention mechanism by comparing their capacity factor (k') in relation to the carbon chain length. The eluent acetonitrile (CH3CN) showed high selectivity on alkyl benzenes, showing the high difference of capacity factor (∆log k') between toluene and octyl benzene. Indeed, the ∆log k' of 80% CH3CN represented 1.42- and 4.25-times longer than 90% MeOH and 60% THF, respectively. The hydrophobicity parameters, van der Waals volume, bond constant, partition constant, π-energy effect and enthalpy were evaluated with the capacity factor (k') of alkyl benzenes eluted on 80% CH3CN, 90% MeOH and 60% THF, respectively. The best eluent for predicting retention behavior of alkyl benzenes was 90% MeOH (R2 0.999). The three parameters, van der Waals volume, bond constant and partition constant were well coincident to log k' by increasing alkyl benzenes. However, π-energy effect and enthalpy were severely disagreeable. Taken together, van der Waals volume, bond constant and partition constant were a reliable parameters to predict the retention behaviors of alkyl benzenes on reversed-phase column.

The aims of this study were to optimize the processing procedure of high-quality semi-alternating temperature dried Israeli carp Cyprinus carpio (SAD-IC) and to investigate the sensory properties of the product. Based on the differences in moisture content of the dorsal and ventral muscles, high quality SAD-IC was prepared by alternating the drying temperature between 4 h at 35℃, and 2 h at 5℃, three times before final drying for 2 h at 35℃. The surface in SAD-IC produced under the optimal alternating-temperature drying process had a markedly superior browning index value and softer texture compared to products produced using constant-temperature drying. SAD-IC produced from dorsal and ventral muscle had significantly superior taste values than the raw material. These results suggest that SAD-IC has the potential to be industrialized.

This study was conducted to optimize the processing process for the oyster Crassostrea gigas gratin with cream sauce (OG-CS). The optimum concentration of added milk for oyster extract with milk (OE-M) was 35.0% based on the frozen-boiled oyster (F-BO), as suggested by the results of sensory evaluation. Response surface methodology was performed with whipping cream (WC)/[OE-M+mixed powder (garlic powder:onion powder=1:1) (MP)] (X<sub>1</sub>) and OE-M/MP (X<sub>2</sub>) as independent variables and viscosity (Y<sub>1</sub>), amino acid nitrogen (Y<sub>2</sub>), and overall acceptance for sensory evaluation (Y<sub>3</sub>) as dependent variables. The optimal proportions were 74.55% of WC, 20.25% of OE-M, and 5.2% of MP, and the predicted multiple response optimal values for the dependent variables were 3,735.6 cP of Y<sub>1</sub>, 197.0 mg/100 g of Y<sub>2</sub>, and 6.2 score of Y<sub>3</sub>. Under optimal conditions, the experimental values for Y<sub>1</sub>, Y<sub>2</sub>,and Y<sub>3</sub> were 3,711.9±30.0 cP, 198.1±1.9 mg/100 g, and 6.3±0.5 score, respectively, which were not significantly different from the predicted values (P>0.05). Further, the results of sensory evaluation suggested that the optimum concentration of macaroni:cheese (1:2) to be 46.2% based on the F-BO. The OG-CS prepared under these optimal conditions was superior to the commercial seafood gratin in overall acceptance.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in physique, physical fitness and isokinetic strength of Forward(FW=10) and Defense(DF=9) in Korean professional ice hockey players. The subjects selected for this study were composed of nineteen male professional ice hockey players. They didn`t have any previous medical or physical problems. They were measured physique, body composition, physical fitness and isokinetic knee strength test. All of data were analyzed utilizing independent t-test by SPSS 10.0. The level of statistical significance was set at p<.05. On the basis of the results analyzed in this study, the conclusion was as follow: 1. The variables of body composition were no significant differences between ice hockey FW players and DF players. 2. In physique variables, the height of ice hockey DF players was significant higher than FW players and remainders of physique variables were no significant differences between both groups. 3. The level of physical fitness variables were no significant differences between ice hockey FW players and DF players. 4. In knee isokinetic strength test, the peak torques of flexor and extensor in a left knee joint of ice hockey between DF and FW players were not significant different, but the peak torques of flexor and extensor in a right knee joint of ice hockey DF players were significantly higher than those of FW players. In conclusion, ice hockey players have the difference in physique and isokinetic knee strength between FW and DF players. Therefore, it is very important that the player should be trained up considering their characteristics according to the players` position.

Encephalomyocarditis virus infection in pigs, characterized by severe reproductive failure in sows and sudden death in less than 7 day-old-piglets, a period of several months from October to December of 1989, in Korea was occurred. The most outstanding gross lesions at necropsy were found in the heart which were consisted of pale, yellow brown necrotic foci of varying size in myocardium. In some cases, pulmonary edema and liver congestion were observed. Histopathology of the heart revealed the interstitial myocarditis, endocarditis and epicarditis with lymphocytic, plasmacytic and macrophage cell infiltration and, in some cases, calcification of the necrotic myocardial muscle fibers. In some cases of brain, the perivascular cuffing and glial nodules were observed. In the liver and the lacrimal gland varying degrees of multifocal necrosis were seen. The virus was isolated from the heart and the brain in a stillborn piglet and a mummified fetus. This outbreak represents the first case of encephalomyocarditis virus infection of pigs in Korea.
