Small scale hydropower is one of most attractive and cost-effective energy technologies for installation within sewage treatment plants. This study was conducted to evaluate the potential of a semi-kaplan micro-hydropower (MHP) system for application to sewage treatment plants with high flow fluctuations and a low head. The semi-kaplan MHP is equipped with an adjustable runner blade, and is without a guide vane, so as to reduce the incidence of mechanical problems. A MHP rating 13.4 kWp with a semi-kaplan turbine has been considered for Kiheung Respia sewage treatment plant, and this installation is estimated to generate 86.8 MWh of electricity annually, which is enough to supply electricity to over 25 households, and equivalent to an annual reduction of 49 ton CO₂. The semi-kaplan turbine showed a 90.2% energy conversion efficiency at the design flow rate of 0.35 m3/s and net head of 4.7 m, and was adaptable to a wide range of flow fluctuations. Through the MHP operation, approximately 2.1% of total electricity demand of Kiheung Respia sewage treatment plant will be achievable. Based on financial analysis, an exploiting MHP is considered economically acceptable with an internal rate of return of 6.1%, net present value of 15,539,000 Korean Won, benefit- cost ratio of 1.08, and payback year of 15.5, respectively, if initial investment cost is 200,000,000 Korean Won.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The goal of this study was to evaluate various clinicopathologic and imaging characteristics as independent predictors of axillary pathologic complete response (pCR) to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and to determine the added value of a model that integrates imaging characteristics of ultrasound (US) restaging with known clinicopathologic characteristics. A total of 227 clinically node-positive breast cancer patients underwent axillary US after NAC (termed <I>US restaging</I>) before surgery. We constructed a clinicopathologic model with independent predictors of clinicopathologic characteristics in multivariate analyses. A combined model was created by integrating imaging characteristics with clinicopathologic characteristics. The predictive values of the models were compared using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. Of the 227 patients, 106 (46.7%) achieved axillary pCR. Multivariate analysis revealed that higher histologic grades (odds ratio [OR] = 4.21 and 10.11 for moderate and high grade, respectively), negative hormonal receptor status (OR = 2.88), smaller (≤1.5 cm) residual tumor size (OR = 2.83), absence of fatty hilum loss (OR = 14.06) and absence of eccentric cortical thickening of the axillary lymph node (OR = 4.42) were independently associated with the axillary pCR (all <I>p</I> values < 0.05). Integrating the imaging characteristics of the US restaging significantly increased the predictive capability of the model that applied only the clinicopathologic characteristics (<I>c</I>-index, 0.783 vs. 0.657; <I>p</I> < 0.001). Imaging characteristics of the US restaging were independently associated with axillary pCR after NAC and they significantly improved the predictive capability of the model that used only the clinicopathologic characteristics.</P>
A Study of a Simple PDP Driver Architecture using the Transformer Network
Kim, Woo-Sup,Shin, Jong-Won,Chae, Su-Yong,Hyun, Byung-Chul,Cho, Bo-Hyung The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2008 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.8 No.2
In this paper, a cost-effective PDP driving circuit using the transformer network is proposed. Compared with the previous works, the half-bridge type energy recovery circuit recovers the reactive energy not to the capacitor but to the source. A single sustain board architecture removes the blocking switches which are placed on the discharge path in parallel, thus reducing the number of devices. A simple reset circuit generates the same waveforms as the previous approaches. The circuit configuration and modified driving waveforms are compared with the previous works. The validity of the proposed simplified driver is verified through tests using a 6-inch panel.
High Efficiency Soft-Switching Boost Converter Using a Single Switch
Kim, Jun-Ho,Jung, Doo-Yong,Park, Sang-Hoon,Won, Chung-Yuen,Jung, Yong-Chae,Lee, Su-Won The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2009 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.9 No.6
This paper presents a new soft-switching boost converter based on the LC resonance and passive clamping technique without additional active switches. The circuit achieves high efficiency and low voltage stress by adopting a soft switching method using LC resonance. This paper gives a mathematical analysis of each mode and a detailed design procedure of the proposed boost converter. First of all, the operational principles are verified through simulation results. Then, according to the design procedure, we designed and built a 1.5[kW] prototype soft switching boost converter. Through the experimental results, we demonstrated the validity and usefulness of the proposed boost converter.

<P>An energy harvesting system using a triboelectric generator (TEG), which converts a small amount of mechanical energy to available electrical energy, has recently been developed by combining a simple one-directional mechanical force (contact and separation or sliding back and forth) with a 2D device materials. However, with regard to using the TEG in real world applications, there is no TEG design suitable for utilizing a variety of mechanical forces and for generating triboelectric charge in various environmental conditions, especially under high relative humidity. In this work, we introduce a design for a humidity-independent triboelectric generator (HITEG) that can generate triboelectric charges with a granular system by simple rotating or shaking under high relative humidity conditions. The HITEG can generate an open-circuit voltage of 81.63 V and a short-circuit current of 213.9 nA using 80 polytetrafluoroethylene beads.</P>
