Effect of Nonstarch Polysaccharide-Rich By-Product Diets on Nitrogen Excretion and Nitrogen Losses from Slurry of Growing-Finishing Pigs

        Canh, T.T.,Verstegen, M.W.A.,Mui, N.B.,Aarnink, A.J.A.,Schrama, J.W.,Van't Klooster, C.E.,Duong, N.K. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1999 Animal Bioscience Vol.12 No.4

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of diet for growing-finishing pigs with high level of non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) from by-products on nitrogen excretion and nitrogen losses from slurry during storage. Sixteen commercial crossbred barrows of about 68 kg BW were randomly allotted to one of four diets. The control diet was formulated using tapioca and rice as basal energy sources. In the other diets, tapioca was replaced by either coconut expellar, rice bran or beer by-product. The diets differed mainly in the amount and compostition of NSP. After a 12-day adaptation period, urine and faeces were collected separately in metabolism cages for 9 days. Urine and faeces from the first four days were used to analyse the nitrogen partitioning. Urine and faeces from the last 5 days were mixed as slurry. The slurry was sampled at the end of the collection period and again after 30 days storage, to analyse for nitrogen to calculate the losses. Increasing dietary NSP reduced urinary nitrogen and nitrogen losses from the slurry during storage. The pigs fed the diet based on beer by-product excreted the most nitrogen via faeces and the least nitrogen via urine. Nitrogen losses from slurry of pigs fed the beer by-product were from 34 to 65% lower than from the other three diets. It is concluded that including NSP-rich by-products in the diet of growing-finishing pigs reduces urinary nitrogen excretion and nitrogen losses from slurry during storage.

      • Compressive sensing reconstruction via decomposition

        Canh, T.N.,Dinh, K.Q.,Jeon, B. Elsevier 2016 SIGNAL PROCESSING-IMAGE COMMUNICATION - Vol.49 No.-

<P>When recovering images from a small number of Compressive Sensing (CS) measurements, a problem arises whereby image features (e.g., smoothness, edges, textures) cannot be preserved well in reconstruction, especially textures at small-scale. Since the missing information still remains in the residual measurement, we propose a novel Decomposition-based CS-recovery framework (DCR) which utilizes residual reconstruction and state-of-the-art filters. The proposed method iteratively refines residual measurement which is closely related to the denoise-boosting techniques. DCR is further incorporated with a weighted total variation and nonlocal structures in the gradient domain as priors to form the proposed Decomposition based Texture preserving Reconstruction (DETER). We subsequently demonstrate robustness of the proposed framework to noise and its superiority over the other state-of-the-art methods, especially at low subrates. Its fast implementation based on the split Bregman technique is also presented.</P>

The Relationship between Innovation Capability and Firm’s Performance in Electronic Companies, Vietnam

Canh Chi HOANG,Bui Hoang NGOC 한국유통과학회 2019 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.6 No.3

The study aims to investigate the determinant factors in the organisation of a firm’s innovative activities, and the impact of innovation capability on firm’s performance of electronic firms in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. How is the performance of electronic companies after delivering an innovation project? How will innovation capability affect firm’s performance in electronic companies? This study aims to seek the answer of these questions. We employ a Structural Equation Model and the PLS technique in order to validate the theoretical model proposed in this study. With observation of 374 valid firms, based on Cronbach’s Alpha analysis, EFA analysis, CFA analysis and SEM analysis, this study discovers 5 groups of factors including: (i) Institution factors; (ii) Attitude of leadership factors; (iii) Marketing factors; (iv) Technological resources factors; (v) Combination factors, which have direct impact on innovation capability of firms. There are 4 groups of factors that have positive impacts on financial performance of electronic firms, with descending order of importance as follows: (1) Attitude of leadership factors; (2) Quality of human resources factors; (3) Innovation capability; (4) Marketing activities factors. Research results are important implications for Government administrative agencies for business to consult and introduce effective support policies.

Export Quality and Economic Vulnerability: Insights from 88 Developing Countries

Canh Phuc Nguyen,Thanh Dinh Su 중앙대학교 경제연구소 2023 Journal of Economic Development Vol.48 No.4

Previous literature shows that trade liberalization causes economic vulnerability due to external shocks. This study endeavours to highlight potential cures based on export quality. The two-step system generalized methods of moment estimate is applied to deal with endogeneity. The area and year fixed effects are also controlled for a sample of 88 developing economies comprising two subsamples due to the availability of export quality index. The empirical results are consistent and unbiased, thus verifying the decreasing effect of export quality on economic vulnerability. This implies that improvements in export quality can help developing countries absorb the risk from trade liberalization. The results are found to be consistent in investigating 48 low- and lower-middle-income economies, but there is no statistical significance evidence for 40 upper-middle and high-income economies). This suggests that trade liberalization without upgrading export product quality reflects a vulnerable aspect of economic integration for low- and lower-income economies.

Bond mechanism of 18-mm prestressing strands: New insights and design applications

        Canh N. Dang,José R. Martí-Vargas,W. Micah Hale 국제구조공학회 2020 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.76 No.1

Pretensioned concrete (PC) is widely used in contemporary construction. Bond of prestressing strand is significant for composite-action between the strand and concrete in the transfer and flexural-bond zones of PC members. This study develops a new methodology for quantifying the bond of 18-mm prestressing strand in PC members based on results of a pullout test, the Standard Test for Strand Bond (STSB). The experimental program includes: (a) twenty-four pretensioned concrete beams, using a wide range of concrete compressive strength; and (b) twelve untensioned pullout specimens. By testing beams, the transfer length, flexural-bond length, and development length were all measured. In the STSB, the pullout forces for the strands were measured. Experimental results indicate a significant relationship between the bond of prestressing strand to the code-established design parameters, such as transfer length and development length. However, the code-predictions can be unconservative for the prestressing strands having a low STSB pullout force. Three simplified bond equations are proposed for the design applications of PC members.

Computation of dilute polymer solution flows using BCF-RBFN based method and domain decomposition technique Computation of dilute polymer solution flows using BCF-RBFN based method and domain decomposition technique

        Canh-Dung Tran,David G. Phillips,Thanh Tran-Cong 한국유변학회 2009 Korea-Australia rheology journal Vol.21 No.1

This paper reports the suitability of a domain decomposition technique for the hybrid simulation of dilute polymer solution flows using Eulerian Brownian dynamics and Radial Basis Function Networks (RBFN) based methods. The Brownian Configuration Fields (BCF) and RBFN method incorporates the features of the BCF scheme (which render both closed form constitutive equations and a particle tracking process unnecessary) and a mesh-less method (which eliminates element-based discretisation of domains). However, when dealing with large scale problems, there appear several difficulties: the high computational time associated with the Stochastic Simulation Technique (SST), and the ill-condition of the system matrix associated with the RBFN. One way to overcome these disadvantages is to use parallel domain decomposition (DD) techniques. This approach makes the BCF-RBFN method more suitable for large scale problems.

        Multi-Resolution Kronecker Compressive Sensing

Canh, Thuong Nguyen,Quoc, Khanh Dinh,Jeon, Byeungwoo The Institute of Electronics and Information Engin 2014 IEIE Transactions on Smart Processing & Computing Vol.3 No.1

Compressive sensing is an emerging sampling technique which enables sampling a signal at a much lower rate than the Nyquist rate. In this paper, we propose a novel framework based on Kronecker compressive sensing that provides multi-resolution image reconstruction capability. By exploiting the relationship of the sensing matrices between low and high resolution images, the proposed method can reconstruct both high and low resolution images from a single measurement vector. Furthermore, post-processing using BM3D improves its recovery performance. The experimental results showed that the proposed scheme provides significant gains over the conventional framework with respect to the objective and subjective qualities.

Enhancement of Transduction Performance of a Dielectric Elastomer Actuator Based on Acrylonitrile Butadiene Rubber

        Canh Toan Nguyen,Ngoc Linh Nguyen,이형석,김대경,이충한,문형필,구자춘,남재도,한정헌,최혁렬 한국고분자학회 2013 Macromolecular Research Vol.21 No.1

The synthetic elastomer based on acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) has been recently developed as a kind of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs). Its advantages are that its properties can be modified according to the requirements of applications. In this paper, we report a comprehensive study on the effects of plasticizers including diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP), dioctyladipate (DOA), and dioctyl phthalate (DOP) as well as a high dielectric additive, which is, barium titanate (BaTiO3) with respect to the overall performance of the synthetic elastomer. We investigate how the significant parameters representing the actuator performance can be changed according to the composition of the additives and how the actuation performances can be improved. In addition, we address how the environmental conditions such as exposure to the light and the air have influence on the properties of the synthetic elastomer, and a method for extending the lifetime of DEA is also addressed.

Compensation of temperature effect on impedance responses of PZT interface for prestress-loss monitoring in PSC girders

Thanh-Canh Huynh,Jeong-Tae Kim 국제구조공학회 2016 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.17 No.6

In this study, a method to compensate the effect of temperature variation on impedance responses which are used for prestress-loss monitoring in prestressed concrete (PSC) girders is presented. Firstly, an impedance-based technique using a mountable lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) interface is presented for prestress-loss monitoring in the local tendon-anchorage member. Secondly, a cross-correlation-based algorithm to compensate the effect of temperature variation in the impedance signatures is outlined. Thirdly, lab-scale experiments are performed on a PSC girder instrumented with a mountable PZT interface at the tendon-anchorage. A series of temperature variation and prestress-loss events are simulated for the lab-scale PSC girder. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed method is experimentally verified for prestress-loss monitoring in the PSC girder under temperature-varying conditions and prestress-loss events.

Modeling and analysis of double-row cylindrical roller bearings

        Van-Canh Tong,홍성욱 대한기계학회 2017 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.31 No.7

This paper presented a four Degrees-of-freedom (DOF) quasi-static model for Double-row Cylindrical roller bearings (D-CRBs). In practice, a D-CRB may be replaced by an equivalent pair of two Single-row Cylindrical roller bearings (S-CRBs). However, this simplification may introduce some errors due to the dimensional difference between a D-CRB and two S-CRBs and the complexity in modeling and analysis due to the indeterminate problems associated with two S-CRBs. The model developed in this paper provided an accurate method for the performance evaluation of systems containing D-CRBs, and it reduced complexity of the indeterminate problem. This study rigorously compared the performances of a D-CRB and a pair of S-CRBs having equivalent geometry. A parametric study was carried out on the effects of bearing loading, radial clearance, and angular misalignment on the D-CRB internal load distribution, stiffness, and fatigue life.
