        Investigation of pulmonary involvement in in­flammatory bowel disease in an experimental model of colitis

        Background/Aims: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may also involve various extra-intestinal organs. Clinical studies have found asymptomatic/symptomatic pulmonary involvement in 1% to 6% of patients with IBD. The present study his­topathologically investigated pulmonary involvement in an experimental model of colitis in order to demonstrate pulmonary tissue involvement in IBD and to expose potential etiological factors. It also explored the relation between inflam­mation and tissue concentrations of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α). Methods: The study comprised 24 male Wistar albino rats. The rats were divided into four groups of six rats each. Acute colitis was induced in two separate groups using either the dextran sulphate sodium (DSS) or trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) method, while the other two groups were used as controls for each model of colitis. Wallace scoring was used for macroscopic assessment of colitis, and the lungs were histopathologically examined. Concentrations of VEGF and TNF-α in pulmonary tissue were measured by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. Results: The number of animals that had alveolar hemorrhage was significantly higher in the TNBS induced colitis and DSS-induced colitis groups compared to their own control groups (p = 0.015 and p = 0.015, respectively). VEGF and TNF-α concentrations in pulmonary tissues were significantly increased in both the TNBS colitis and DSS colitis groups compared to their own control groups (p = 0.002 and p = 0.004, respectively; and p = 0.002 and p = 0.002, respectively). Conclusions: The present study demonstrated that significant and serious histo­pathological changes directly associated with colitis occur in the lungs in IBD.

        Leaching kinetics of calcined magnesite in acetic acid solutions

        The leaching kinetics of calcined magnesite by using acetic acid solutions was investigated in a batch reactor by using the parameters such as temperature, acid concentration and particle size. The experimental results were successfully correlated by linear regression using Statistica Package Program. Dissolution curves were evaluated in order to test shrinking core models for fluid–solid systems. It was concluded that the leaching of calcined magnesite was controlled by chemical reaction. In addition, the fact that leaching was controlled by the chemical reaction was also supported with the relationship between the reaction rate constant and the particle radius. The apparent activation energy of dissolution process was found as 34.60 kJ mol1.

        An Investigation on Comfort Properties of Dyed Mulberry Silk/Cotton Blended Fabrics

        Mulberry silk is one of the well known silk types. Especially, its lustrous appearance and handle properties makethis fiber type an important natural source for textiles. Even if its properties let the fiber to be produced by itself, blendingwith other fiber types can be preferred in order to reduce raw material costs and make it more affordable. Cotton can be agood companion to this fiber type because of its tendency to be textile material. In this study, mulberry silk/combed cottonblended yarns were produced by using siro and ring spinning systems, in three different yarn counts. These yarns were dyedand then knitted in a laboratory type circular knitting machine. The comfort properties of these fabrics were investigated. According to test results, increasing silk content in the blend and using the siro spinning system positively affected thecomfort properties of fabrics, in general.

        High alloyed new stainless steel shielding material for gamma and fast neutron radiation

        Stainless steel is used commonly in nuclear applications for shielding radiation, so in this study, three different types of new stainless steel samples were designed and developed. New stainless steel compound ratios were determined by using Monte Carlo Simulation program Geant 4 code. In the sample production, iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), silicium (Si), sulphur (S), carbon (C), molybdenum (Mo), manganese (Mn), wolfram (W), rhenium (Re), titanium (Ti) and vanadium (V), powder materials were used with powder metallurgy method. Total macroscopic cross sections, mean free path and transmission number were calculated for the fast neutron radiation shielding by using (Geant 4) code. In addition to neutron shielding, the gamma absorption parameters such as mass attenuation coefficients (MACs) and half value layer (HVL) were calculated using Win-XCOM software. Sulfuric acid abrasion and compressive strength tests were carried out and all samples showed good resistance to acid wear and pressure force. The neutron equivalent dose was measured using an average 4.5 MeV energy fast neutron source. Results were compared to 316LN type stainless steel, which commonly used in shielding radiation. New stainless steel samples were found to absorb neutron better than 316LN stainless steel at both low and high temperatures.

        Effects of powder particle size on mechanostructure and cell viability of the synthesised bioceramic bone grafts

        Hydroxyapatite (HA) based biografts were syntesized at 0.68, 1.2 and 2.4 μm powder particle size by sol gel method. The effectof powder particle sizes on morphology, mechanical properties and in vitro cell viability of the biografts were analysed. Eachcomposition at different particle sizes (0.68, 1.2 and 2.4 μm) were sintered at 1180 oC and quantitative phase analysis wascharacterized by FTIR, XRD and SEM-EDX. Mechanical properties were determined by axial compression and Vickershardness tests. The highest compresion strengths and hardness values were obtained in samples having the particle size of 0.68μm and such values were increased with decreased particle sizes. Furthermore, from in vitro Cell viability tests it wasdetermined that no toxicity was detected at 0,1 and 0,3 μM concentrations at lower powder particle sizes. However, cellviability was significantly reduced in the syntesized samples having 2.4 μm particle size at 0,3 μM concentration.

        Effects of Chronic Aluminum Administration on Blood and Liver Iron-Related Parameters in Mice

        In this study, the effects of chronically administered aluminum on iron metabolism-related parameters of liver and blood of mice were investigated. An additional purpose to determine how chronic aluminum administration together with vitamin E as an antioxidant to mice changed the parameters related to iron metabolism. For these purposes, we used 21 adult female Balb-c mice in this study. The animals were divided into three groups: one group with aluminum administered chronically, another group with aluminum plus vitamin E administered chronically, and the control group. Serum levels of hemoglobin, ferritin, iron, transferrin, hematocrit, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), as well as percentage of transferrin saturation were determined in all groups. In addition, the liver tissue levels of ferritin and iron were analyzed. Hemoglobin and hematocrit levels of the aluminum group and aluminum plus vitamin E group were significantly decreased compared to the control. In conclusion, no changes occurred in the serum iron related parameters although Al induced anemia in mice when Al administered chronically. There was an increase in the levels of liver iron and ferritin with Al, but Vit E had no effect on the changes of all blood and liver parameters caused by Al.

        Cyclic-carbonate functionalized polymer brushes on polymeric microspheres: Immobilized laccase for degradation of endocrine disturbing compounds

        A novel support material containing cyclic carbonate group for facile enzyme immobilization was synthesized from [poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene)-graft-poly(glycidyl methacrylate)] “[PS-co-DVB-g-P(GMA)]” microsphere under carbon dioxide atmosphere. It was named as (poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene)-graft-poly(cyclic-carbonate methacrylate)] “[PS-co-DVB-g-P(CCMA)]” microsphere. Laccase was covalently immobilized using the microspheres carrying cyclic epoxy and cyclic carbonate groups. The amount of enzyme loading on the cyclic carbonate groups of the microspheres was 47.8 mg/g. The immobilized enzyme was used for degradation of Bisphenol A, and Congo Red dye in packed bed reactor. The immobilized laccase preserved its initial activity about 67.5% and 93.0% for degradation of Bisphenol A and Conge Red, respectively.

        Clinicopathologic Characteristics and Therapeutic Outcomes of Primary Gastrointestinal Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas in Central Anatolia, in Turkey

        We carried out a retrospective analysis of 74 patients who were presented to our center with histopathological diagnosis of primary gastro-intestinal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma between 1990 and 2001. All patients have been staged according to Lugano Staging System. For histopathological classification, International Working Formulation was applied. The treatment choice concerning the surgical or non-surgical management was decided by the initially acting physician. Treatment modalities were compared using the parameters of age, sex, histopathological results, stage, and the site of disease. Of the 74 patients, 31 werefemale and 43 were male, with a median age of 49 years (range 15-80). The stomach was the most common primary site and was seenin 51 of 74 patients (68.9%). The intermediate and high grade lymphomas constituted 91.9% of the all cases. In a median follow-up of 29 months (range 2-128), 20 out of 74 patients died. There was a three year overall survival rate in 65.4% of all patients. The three year overall survival rate was better in stage I and II1 patients who were treated with surgery plus chemotherapy (+/-RT) than those treated with chemotherapy alone (93.7% vs. 55.6%, p 0.05). The stage and presence of B symptoms affected the disease free survival and overall survival significantly, but the histopathologic grade only affected the overall survival. On the basis of these results, we suggest that surgicalresection is necessary before chemotherapy in early stage (stage I and II1) patients with gastrointestinal non-Hodgkin's lymphomas because of the significant survival advantage it would bring to the patient.
