Assessing sex offender treatment amenability is an important component of making treatment and risk assessment more successful. For the purpose of this paper, treatment amenability is defined as a sexual offender's motivation to enter and be successful in treatment. A range of concepts related to treatment amenability such as psychopathy, empathy, and criminal thinking were reviewed. With limited exception, little research has been performed related to sexual offender's willingness to change. Utilizing Prochaska and DiClemente's (1984) transtheoretical model related to willingness to change, the author proposed an in-depth examination of cognitive and affective factors related to sexual offender decision making regarding entering treatment. It was hypothesized that sex offenders who are more willing to change their behaviors will exhibit lower levels of criminal thinking, more empathy, higher levels of psychopathy, and less perceived coercion to enter treatment. Results of the present study indicated no significant differences in level of empathy, criminal thinking styles, level of psychopathy, or level of perceived coercion between sex offenders classified as less willing to make changes versus those classified as more willing to make changes to their sexually assaultive behaviors. These results suggest that these factors were not valuable in differentiating sex offenders who are less willing to make changes versus those sex offenders who are more willing to make changes to their sexually assaultive behavior.

This dissertation presents a preliminary reconstruction of the phonology and lexicon (268 items) of Proto-Central Naga (PCN), the putative ancestor of a group of Tibeto-Burman languages spoken primarily in Nagaland, a state in northeast India: Ao, Lotha, Sangtam, and Yimchungru. Also reconstructed in the process is the phonology and lexicon (386 items) of Proto-Ao (PAo), the intermediate ancestor of the Ao lects. Teleo-reconstructions of Proto-Tibeto-Burman (PTB) are drawn upon to examine the sound changes that took place in the development from PTB to the Central Naga languages. Chapter I (Introduction) provides background information on the Central Naga languages and discusses the history of scholarship on this group. The conventions and linguistic sources used throughout this work are also presented. Chapter II (Proto-Ao) reconstructs the phonology and lexicon of Proto-Ao, the intermediate ancestor of the Ao branch of Central Naga. It presents the phonology of standard Chungli Ao, Mangmetong Mongsen Ao, and Proto-Ao, followed by reconstructions of PAo onsets and rimes based on 386 cognate sets. The reconstructibility of the PAo tone system is also explored, and the chapter is concluded with a discussion of the PTB>PAo and PAo>Ao sound changes proposed. Chapter III (Proto-Central Naga) reconstructs the phonology and lexicon of Proto-Central Naga. It presents the phonology of Lotha, Sangtam, Yimchungru, and Proto-Central Naga, followed by reconstructions of PCN rimes and onsets based on 268 cognate sets, with an intervening discussion of the prefixes. The chapter is concluded with a discussion of the PTB>PCN and PCN>CN sound changes proposed. Chapter IV (Conclusion) examines the place of the Central Naga group within the Tibeto-Burman family based on a study of shared phonological innovations. The dissertation is then concluded with a discussion of future directions in diachronic research on the CN languages. Seven appendices are provided (A-G): three indices of the sound changes proposed for PTB>PCN (Appendix A), PCN>CN languages (Appendix B), and PAo>Ao lects (Appendix C); two sets of charts summarizing the PTB>PCN>CN (Appendix D) and PTB>PAo>Ao (Appendix E) sound changes; and two indices of PAo (Appendix F) and PCN (Appendix G) reconstructions, alphabetized by proto-gloss.

      • Nature Acts as Our Teacher: Minangkabau Art World Making in Indonesia

This dissertation examines the work of modern and contemporary artists associated with the Minangkabau ethnic group. Today, this group is roughly synonymous with the Indonesian province of West Sumatra. It is also recognized as the world’s largest matrilineal Muslim society. Throughout history because men had no right to immovable property, this contributed to a propensity for outward migration (merantau) and shaped what is imagined as the Minangkabau world (alam Minangkabau). This multi-sited world that is constituted by a homeland and diaspora and is shaped by factors like its members’ association with Minangkabau history, culture, and language rather than fixed geographic boundaries is the focus of this study that spans the late-colonial era (c. 1900) to the present. My focus is on artists from Minangkabau because they occupy a double place in Indonesian modern and contemporary art historiography. Not only do artists from Minangkabau hold roles as national pioneers who are credited with achieving successes in the name of Indonesia but also, the work of artists from Minangkabau has consistently been recognized because of how it diverges from dominant streams of expression. Until recently, little attention was paid to what might have contributed to such trends. In this dissertation I show that thanks to the commercial success of certain artists from Minangkabau along with the growth of two artist communities that are part of the Minangkabau diaspora in Java, there is now a greater coherence around Minangkabau identity in art. This makes it possible to trace a history of visual expression specific to Minangkabau that demonstrates a unique relationship to nature and ecosystems and is inseparable from Minangkabau customary norms (adat). This dissertation makes three broad contributions. First, it engages with a history of art making associated with the work of modern and contemporary artists in and from Minangkabau. To date, writing on Indonesian art history has centered on the island of Java. This is because the nation’s preeminent art schools are located there along with the greatest concentration of artists. Second, by focusing on how merantau has shaped the careers of artists associated with Minangkabau and contributed to what I contend is a contemporary Minangkabau art world, it highlights the ways that historical modes of world-making challenge prescriptive constructures like the nation-state and politicized ideas of regional cohesion. Third, through an engagement with adat and alam (nature, universe, and realms of perception), it contributes to scholarship that is focused on decolonizing the Anthropocene by foregrounding local or non-Western bodies of knowledge.
