        Influence of host plants on the development, survivorship, and fecundity of the summer fruit tortrix moth, Adoxophyes orana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)

        The summer fruit tortrix moth Adoxophyes orana is a seriously damaged leaf roller pest for fruit trees. In this study, we evaluated the effect of five host plants (apple, Malus domestica B.; peach, Prunus persica var. nectarina; apricot, Armeniaca vulgaris Lam.; mulberry, Morus alba L.; and jujube, Ziziphus jujuba M.) on the development, survival, and fecundity of A. orana under laboratory conditions. Results showed that the development times of A. orana on jujube were significantly longer than those on the other four plants. The preimaginal survival rate was influenced by the host plants, which were fed during the larval stage, and with the highest on peach, followed by apple, apricot, and mulberry, and with the lowest on jujube. Adult females from larvae reared on apricot laid the greatest numbers of eggs (318.11 eggs per female), while that on apple, jujube, and mulberry was smaller, and no significant difference was observed among them. The highest intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was observed on peach and apricot; these two fruit trees were considered to be the most suitable host plant for A. orana because of the shorter developmental duration, higher survival rate, and the highest fecundity.

      • W(110) 표면에 CO의 흡착

        The interaction of CO with W(110) surface was investigated through LEED, TDS, and photoelectron spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation under UHV condition. After CO saturation at RT, two desorption states, called α and β , were observed at about 400 and 1150 K in thermal desorption spectra, respectively. The kinetics of 3-CO followed the first order kinetics, indicating the existence of molecular CO on W(110) surface. This is contrary to the previous results. The O 1s BE(binding energy) of CO adsorbed on W(110) surface at room temperature was 529.9 eV. On the other hand, the O 1s BE of β-CO after heating to 900 K was different from that of oxygen adsorbed W(110) surface, suggesting a different adsorption state. According to the UP valence band spectra, we observed two peaks at near -10.7 eV (4σ) and -7.0 eV (5σ+1π), indicating the molecular adsorption of CO at room temperature. Furthermore we could see the 4σ peak at the various photon energy and elevated temperatures. Comparing the energy separation, Δ(4σ-1π) , between 4σ and 1π UP peaks of chemisorbed CO, we found that an increased separation reflects an decreased C-O bond strength. Therefore on the basis of TDS and photoelectron spectroscopy, we could suggest that β state of CO on W(110) may not be dissociated and has an adsorption geometry of lying-down mode.

        Chemical Constituents from the Aerial Parts of Isodon coetsa and their Cytotoxicity

        Three new compounds (1-3), including a neolignan, a triterpenoid, and a diterpenoid, together with twenty known compounds (4-23), were isolated from the aerial parts of Isodon coetsa. Their structures and relative configurations were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data. Compounds 1, 3, 5-9, 11-13, 16-17, and 19-23 were evaluated for their cytotoxicity against HT-29, BEL-7402, and SK-OV-3 human tumor cell lines. Compound 7 showed significant inhibitory effects on all three types of cells, with IC50 values of 2.52, 3.06, 2.14 μM, respectively.

      • A Discovery of Low Hydraulic Resistance Channel Along Meridians

        A hydro-mechanic model was put forward to study the fundamental nature of acupuncture meridians. The basic state of low hydraulic resistance was tested on humans and mini pigs using three methods. The first, a modified Guyton’s method, proved that there was lower hydraulic resistance on meridians compared with nonmeridians. The second scanning method involved a single pressure transducer that can find the lowest resistance point in tissue, and the third method used two transducers and provided a more stable measurement. Using the latter method, low hydraulic resistance points were found very close to low impedance points along meridians. The transmission of artificial interstitial fluid pressure waves was measured to examine their connection to the low resistance points, with the result that a good connection between the points was confirmed. This means the points form channels along the meridians that we refer to as low hydraulic resistance channels. The channel was imaged through isotopic tracing and a migration of isotope 99mTe could be found along the channel. The layer of the channel was detected by injecting Alcian blue and the track was found beneath the skin. All of the above experiments suggest the existence of a new type of channel in living tissues that has not yet been described in modern science, but coincides quite well with the Qi channel theory of traditional Chinese medicine.         Homoisoflavanones from Polygonatum odoratum Rhizomes Inhibit Advanced Glycation End Product Formation

        Protein glycation inhibitors from Polygonatum odoratum rhizomes were investigated using a bioassay-guided procedure to characterize active compounds for preventing and treating diabetic complications. The EtOH extract and soluble fractions were evaluated using an in vivo model of renal advanced glycation end-product (AGE) accumulation in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats and an in vitro bovine serum albumin-glucose assay. Three homoisoflavanones 3-(4’-hydroxybenzyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-6-methyl-8-methoxychroman-4-one (1), 3-(4’-hydroxybenzyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-6,8-dimethylchroman-4-one (2), and 3-(4’-methoxybenzyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-6-methyl-8-methoxychroman-4-one (3), isolated from the active CHCl3-soluble fraction of the EtOH extract, were subjected to in vitro bioassays to evaluate their inhibitory activities against AGE formation. All the isolates inhibited AGE formation more effectively than the positive control, aminoguanidine. These results indicate that pending further study these compounds could be used as novel natural product drug for mitigating diabetic complications.

      • Application on Web Page Filtering Technology

        Web page filtering technology intends to filter out the large number of the repeated and theme-unrelated noise information and obtain useful information. Some web filtering methods cannot make full use of the layout and visual features. In view of the new mainstream “DIV+CSS” designing style of modern commercial web sites, this paper summarizes that elements laying in the same div blocks have common semantic features and proposed a DIV_FOREST model to represent the web pages. And in combination with the Vision-based Page Segmentation Algorithm, a DVPS Algorithm which considers both layout features and visual features was proposed to improve web page filtering efficiency.

        A Novel Method of Self-Healing in Cementitious Materials by Using Polyacrylic Hydrogel

        Cementitious materials are the most widely used in the construction. However, cementitious materials have defects such as low tensile strength which is easy to cause the formation of cracks. In recent years, with the research and application of smart materials, intelligent cementitious materials with self-sensing, self-diagnosis and self-healing functions have received extensive researcher’s attention. In this paper, a polyacrylic hydrogel that could be utilized for self-healing of cementitious materials was designed, and the three-dimensional network structure of the hydrogel controlled the release rate of encapsulated repair agent. The phosphate-incorporated hydrogel was filled into cement slurry to prepare self-healing cementitious materials. After the cement sample cracked and water penetrated into the crack, the phosphate was released from hydrogel. Phosphate reacted with the calcium in the pore solution to form hydroxyapatite type minerals which healed the crack. The self-healing cementitious material is in a position to heal cracks of 300 μm in width. After healing for 28 days at 20oC and 95% of RH, the compressive strength of precracked specimens could reach 85% of that of intact ones.

        Study on the Drive Parameters of a High-precision Basis Weight Control Valve

        Decreasing precision or mechanical damage may occur in basis weight valves because of excess design torque valves. Stepping motor driver current values are set at the rated motor current or are based on practical experience. Applied technological research on current setting values was conducted in this paper. A current-setting experimental device was developed to solve this problem. The drive parameters include the drive current value, mechanical strength of valve actuator and the state holding current value were tested. Finally, the acceleration time for the trapezoidal velocity curve was calculated, which was helpful to improve the positioning precision of the valve. The test result with a sample diameter of a DN125 basis weight valve showed that the reasonable current value stage was 3.71 A, and the state holding current value stage was 50%. Then, the acceleration and deceleration times of the trapezoidal velocity curve were both set at 0.01 seconds. The positioning precision was able to match the requirements of a basis weight control valve for 10,000 steps in which an error of 1 step was less than 5.0% during 10,000 positioning steps under such drive parameters.

        The K+/H+ antiporter AhNHX1 improved tobacco tolerance to NaCl stress by enhancing K+ retention

        High salinity is the one of important factors limiting plant growth and crop production. Many NHX-type antiporters have been reported to catalyze K+/H+ exchange to mediate salt stress. This study shows that an NHX gene from Arachis hypogaea L. has an important role in K+ uptake and transport, which affects K+ accumulation and plant salt tolerance. When overexpressing AhNHX1, the growth of tobacco seedlings is improved with longer roots and a higher fresh weight than the wild type (WT) under NaCl treatment. Meanwhile, when exposed to NaCl stress, the transgenic seedlings had higher K+/H+ antiporter activity and their roots got more K+ uptake. NaCl stress could induce higher K+ accumulation in the roots, stems, and leaves of transgenic tobacco seedlings but not Na+ accumulation, thus, leading to a higher K+/Na+ ratio in the transgenic seedlings. Additionally, the AKT1, HAK1, SKOR, and KEA genes, which are involved in K+ uptake or transport, were induced by NaCl stress and kept higher expression levels in transgenic seedlings than in WT seedlings. The H+-ATPase and H+-PPase activities were also higher in transgenic seedlings than in the WT seedlings under NaCl stress. Simultaneously, overexpression of AhNHX1 increased the relative distribution of K+ in the aerial parts of the seedlings under NaCl stress. These results showed that AhNHX1 catalyzed the K+/H+ antiporter and enhanced tobacco tolerance to salt stress by increasing K+ uptake and transport.

        De novo assembly and transcriptome analysis of differentially expressed genes relevant to variegation in hawthorn flowers

        Flower color variegation has been observed in many plant species. However, pink flowers on the white-blooming hawthorn trees found by our group earlier have never been reported. To better understand the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in variegated hawthorn flowers, white and pink flowers at different developmental stages (S1 and S2) underwent transcriptome sequencing separately. Approximately 34.28 Gb of high-quality data were obtained and assembled into 100,013 unigenes with an average length of 706.93 bp. These unigenes were further subjected to functional annotation and biochemical pathway analysis, and DEGs of two types of hawthorn flowers at different developmental stages were studied. Based on the enrichment analysis of DEGs, eight anthocyanin-modified enzyme genes or other enzyme genes that indirectly affect anthocyanin synthesis (5AT, 3GGT , and AI, β-Glu, two Aux/IAAs, two PODs), eight structural genes (UFGT, DFR, CHI, two F3Hs, and three PALs), and three transcription factors (one MYB and two bHLHs) were also identified. We randomly selected 15 genes, and the trends in the expression levels of these genes in the organs of white and pink flowers at different developmental stages were verified by quantitative real-time PCR. Mass sequence data obtained by RNA-seq of variegated hawthorn flowers provided basic sequence information and a unique opportunity to uncover the genetic mechanisms under-lying flower color variegation.
