        Sustainable Lubrication/Cooling Systems for Efficient Turning Operations of g-TiAl Parts from the Aeronautic Industry

        This paper presents the study of the finishing, repair, and maintenance turning operations of gamma titanium aluminide (γ-TiAl) parts from the aeronautic industry, with the aim to evaluate different sustainable lubrication/cooling environments, including a newly developed synthetic ester water-based metalworking fluid (EcoMWF) to replace mineral-based MWF (MWF). The systems considered in this work are dry, cold-compressed air, minimum quantity lubrication (MQL), cryogenic, and flood on turning of a new and relatively low explored titanium alloy, γ-TiAl. Therefore, the influence of machining parameters and insert type on tool wear, surface roughness, roundness, and cutting temperature have been investigated for each environment. Results detailed in this study showed a significant influence of the lubrication/cooling systems on the machinability of γ-TiAl. The study also revealed that the sustainability of turning γ-TiAl could be improved under the cryogenic system and the new EcoMWF, keeping the same machining performance as common mineral-based MWF.

      • TB Co-infection among COVID Confirmed Patients - The Philippine Experience

        Tuberculosis (TB) remains the most common infectious disease worldwide with a significant impact on mortality especially among immunocompromised hosts. Recently, significant strides have been accomplished towards TB control both in the global scene and in specific countries with the introduction of rapid diagnostic tests and invigorated national TB control programs at the various country levels. Then, SARS CoV2 infection suddenly struck. COVID-19 has plagued a lot of economy and claimed a lot of lives and strained and stressed all healthcare systems across the globe. Suddenly, all efforts and initiatives were shifted to handle and manage this pandemic. The gains in TB control were abruptly derailed. People were succumbing to COVID-19. A lot of demographic data came out and identified certain population groups who might be more at risk to the ill effects of this disease. Recently, some epidemiologic studies have uncovered some peculiarities among TB patients co-infected with the SARS CoV2 virus. There are some signals to warn us that individuals with active or latent TB are at greater risk of acquiring COVID-19. Unfortunately, these same studies also documented a more rapid and severe course once afflicted with both conditions. Some concepts have also emerged to possibly explain this phenomenon: common cellular pathways may be activated, inflammatory processes may be more chaotic, and synergistic insults in the immune system. There were also observed peculiarities in the clinical course and possible outcomes in terms of treatment of this co-infection. Certainly, affliction with both diseases deserves due attention. This session will tackle the following objectives: ㆍ To present the concepts on the pathophysiology of TB and COVID-19 co-infection. ㆍ To highlight demographic data on the presentations, clinical course, and outcomes of patients suffering from both diseases. ㆍ To demonstrate how one disease can affect the other in terms of public health control and response and present some potential solutions.

        A Synthetic Analog of Resveratrol Inhibits the Proangiogenic Response of Liver Sinusoidal Cells during Hepatic Metastasis

        We utilized Fas21, a resveratrol analog, to modulate the function of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) during the angiogenic phase of murine liver metastasis by B16 melanoma and 51b colorectal carcinoma. Preangiogenic micrometastases were treated with Fas21 (1 mg/kg/day) or vehicle during the development of intra-angiogenic tracts. Mice treated with Fas21 showed reduced liver tumor foci in both liver metastasis models. Micrometastases were classified immunohistochemically, as well as according to their position coordinates and connection to local microvasculature. The volume of liver occupied by sinusoidal-type foci, containing infiltrating angiogenic capillaries, decreased by ~50% in Fas21-treated mice compared to vehicle-treated ones in both tumor metastasis models. The volume of portal foci, containing peripheral neoangiogenesis within a discontinuous layer of myofibroblasts, was similar in all experimental groups in both tumor metastasis models, but displayed enhanced necrotic central areas devoid of angiogenesis following Fas21 treatment. As a result, sinusoidal tumors from mice treated with Fas21 showed a 50% reduction in desmin(+)/asma(+) HSCs and CD31(+) vessel density, and a 45% reduction in intrametastatic VEGF mRNA compared with sinusoidal tumors from vehicle-treated mice. Necrotic portal metastases increased 2-4-fold in treated mice. In vitro, Fas21 reduced VEGF secretion by HSCs and 51b cells dose-dependently. Additionally, HSCs migration in response to tumor soluble factors was dose-dependently diminished by Fas21, as was LSEC migration in response to HSCs and tumor soluble factors. Resveratrol analog Fas21 inhibits the proangiogenic response of HSCs and LSECs during the development of murine liver metastasis.

        Ship's Collision Avoidance Support System Using Fuzzy-CBR

        Ship's collision avoidance is a skill that masters of merchant marine vessels have acquired through years of experience and that makes them feel at ease to guide their ship out from danger quickly compared to inexperienced officers. Case based reasoning (CBR) uses the same technique in solving tasks that needs reference from variety of situations. CBR can render decision-making easier by retrieving past solutions from situations that are similar to the one at hand and make necessary adjustments in order to adapt them. In this paper, we propose to utilize the advantages of CBR in a support system for ship's collision avoidance while using fuzzy algorithm for its retrieval of similar navigational situations, stored in the casebase, thus avoiding the cumbersome tasks of creating a new solution each time a new situation is encountered. There will be two levels within the Fuzzy-CBR. The first level will identify the dangerous ships and infer the new case. The second level will retrieve cases from casebase and adapt the solution to solve for the output. While CBR's accuracy depends on the efficient retrieval of possible solutions to be adapted from stored cases, fuzzy algorithm will improve the effectiveness of solving the similarity to a new case at hand.

        Inhibition of COX-2 Impairs Colon Cancer Liver Metastasis through Reduced Stromal Cell Reaction

        Liver colonization is initiated through the interplay between tumor cells and adhesion molecules present in liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs). This crosstalk stimulates tumor COX-2 upregulation and PGE2 secretion. To elucidate the role of the LSEC intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) in the prometastatic response exerted by tumor and stromal COX-2, we utilized celecoxib (CLX) as a COX-2 inhibitory agent. We analyzed the in vitro proliferative and secretory responses of murine C26 colorectal cancer (CRC) cells to soluble ICAM-1 (sICAM-1), cultured alone or with LSECs, and their effect on LSEC and hepatic stellate cell (HSC) migration and in vivo liver metastasis. CLX reduced sICAM-1-stimulated COX-2 activation and PGE2 secretion in C26 cells cultured alone or cocultured with LSECs. Moreover, CLX abrogated sICAM-1-induced C26 cell proliferation and C26 secretion of promigratory factors for LSECs and HSCs. Interestingly, CLX reduced the protumoral response of HSC, reducing their migratory potential when stimulated with C26 secretomes and impairing their secretion of chemotactic factors for LSECs and C26 cells and proliferative factors for C26 cells. In vivo, CLX abrogated the prometastatic ability of sICAM-1-activated C26 cells while reducing liver metastasis. COX-2 inhibition blocked the creation of a favorable tumor microenvironment (TME) by hindering the intratumoral recruitment of activated HSCs and macrophages in addition to the accumulation of fibrillar collagen. These results point to COX-2 being a key modulator of processes initiated by host ICAM-1 during tumor cell/LSEC/HSC crosstalk, leading to the creation of a prometastatic TME in the liver.

        Long-Term Grey Matter Changes in First Episode Psychosis: A Systematic Review

        Objective: To determine possible progressive changes of the grey matter at the first stages of the schizophrenia spectrum disorders, and to determine what regions are involved in these changes. Methods: We searched the literature concerning studies on longitudinal changes in grey matter in first-episode psychosis using magnetic resonance imaging, especially studies with an interval between scans of more than a year. Only articles published before 2018 were searched. We selected 19 magnetic resonance imaging longitudinal studies that used different neuroimaging analysis techniques to study changes in cerebral grey matter in a group of patients with a first episode of psychosis. Results: Patients with first episode of psychosis showed a decrease over time in cortical grey matter compared with a group of control subjects in frontal, temporal (specifically in superior regions), parietal, and subcortical regions. In addition to the above, studies indicate that patients showed a grey matter decrease in cerebellum and lateral ventricles volume. Conclusion: The results suggest a decrease in grey matter in the years after the first episode of psychosis. Furthermore, the results of the studies showed consistency, regardless of the methods used in their analyses, as well as the time intervals between image collections.

        We have proposed Fuzzy-CBR to find a solution from past knowledge retrieved from the database and adapted to a new situation. However, ontology is needed in identifying concepts, relations and instances that are involved in a situation in order to improve and facilitate the efficient retrieval of similar cases from the CBR database. This paper proposes the way to apply ontology for identifying the concepts involved in a new case, used as inputs, for a ship collision avoidance support system and in solving for similarity through document articulation and abstraction levels. These ontologies will be used to build a conceptual model of a maneuvering situation..

        Fuzzy-CBR Collision Avoidance Support System is a system that finds a solution from past knowledge retrieved from the database and adapted to a new situation. Its algorithm has resulted to an adapting a solution for a new situation. However, ontology is needed in identifying concepts, relations and instances that are involved in a situation in order to improve and facilitate the efficient retrieval of similar cases from the CBR database. This paper proposes the way to apply ontology for identifying the concepts involved in a new environment and use them as inputs, for a ship collision avoidance support system., Similarity will be obtained through document articulation and using abstraction levels. A conceptual model of a maneuvering situation will be built using these ontologies.
