      • Treatment Outcomes and Survival Study of Gastric Cancer Patients: A Retrospective Analysis in an Endemic Region

Basaran, Hamit,Koca, Timur,Cerkesli, Arda Kaymak,Arslan, Deniz,Karaca, Sibel Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.5

Purpose: To present information about prognostic factors of gastric cancer patients treated in our Erzurum center including age, gender, tumour location, pathological grade, stage and the effect of treatment on survival. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was performed on patients who applied to our clinic and diagnosed as gastric cancer. Age and gender of the patients, primary location, histopathological characteristics, TNM stage of the gastric cancers (GCs), treatment applied, oncological treatment modalities and survival outcomes were studied. A univariate analysis of potential prognostic factors was performed with the log-rank test for categorical factors and parameters with a p value < 0.05 at the univariate step were included in the multivariate regression. Results: A total of 228 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of gastric cancer were included in the study with a male/female ratio of 1.47. Median follow-up period was estimated as 22.3 (range, 3 to 96) months. When diagnosis of the patients at admission was analysed, stage III patients were most frequently encountered (n=147; 64.5%). One hundred and twenty-six (55.3%) underwent surgical treatment, while 117 (51.3%) were given adjuvant chemotherapy. Median overall survival time was 18.0 (${\pm}1.19$) months. Mean overall survival rates for 1, 2, 3 and 5 years were $68{\pm}0.031%$, $36{\pm}0.033%$, $24{\pm}0.031%$and $15.5{\pm}0.036%$, respectively. Univariate variables found to be significant for median OS in the multivariate analysis were evaluated with Cox regression analysis. A significant difference was found among TNM stage groups, location of the tumour and postoperative adjuvant treatment receivers (p values were 0.011, 0.025 and 0.001, respectively). Conclusions: This study revealed that it is possible to achieve long-term survival of gastric cancer with early diagnosis. Besides, in locally advanced GC patients, curative resection followed by adjuvant concomitant chemoradiotherapy based on the McDonald regimen was an independent prognostic factor for survival.

Experimental and numerical investigation of walls strengthened with fiber plaster

        Hakan Basaran,Ali Demir,Muhiddin Bagcı,Sefa Ergun 국제구조공학회 2015 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.56 No.2

The topic of this study is to investigate behaviors of masonry walls strengthened with reinforced fiber plaster under diagonal tensile loads. Full blend brick 100×50×30 mm in dimensions were used to make masonry walls with dimensions of 400×400×100 mm. Three different samples were manufactured by plastering masonry walls with traditional style, with 3% polypropylene or with 5% steel fiber. All the samples were tested using ASTM 1391- 81 standards. The propagation of damage on samples caused by diagonal tensile load was observed and load-displacement graphs were plotted for each sample. A finite element software (ABAQUS) was used to obtain numerical values for all samples and crack patterns and load-displacement responses were obtained. Experimental and numerical results were compared.

Ali Basaran,Naci Kurgan,Remzi Varol 대한기계학회 2013 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.27 No.8

One of the widely used powder metal materials in automotive industry, which is copper steel FC 0205 (Fe + 2% Cu + 0.5% C), was used in this study. The pressed samples has been prepared at the compression pressure of 680 MPa and sintered in conventional furnace at 1120°C for 30 minutes. The samples with 7 Mg/m3 densities were used as fatigue and shot peening processes. Shot peening were applied with 20A and 32A and the others were not peened. Plasma nitrocarburizing process was performed at 555°C for 2 hours under 600-900 Pa pressure. Fatigue tests were conducted at room temperature on a rotating bending type fatigue test device. It was determined that shot peening should be used where increased fatigue strength is needed, and plasma nitrocarburizing should be preferred where surface hardness is required, and plasma nitrocarburizing after shot peening process is much more useful.

Fruit Quality Attributes of Blackberry (Rubus sanctus) Mutants Obtained by ^(60)Co Gamma Irradiation

Pervin Basaran,Kahraman Kepenek 한국생물공학회 2011 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.16 No.3

Blackberry mutants were induced by the irradiation of blackberry shoots with 5 kilo radians of cobalt (^(60)Co) gamma irradiation. Seven mutant plants demonstrating improved plant growth properties were selected for evaluation of the fruit quality characteristics, such as size, shape, color, firmness, soluble solids content, juice acidity, nutritive value (e.g. ascorbic acid) and overall fruit flavor. The organoleptic properties, including texture, firmness, flavor, sweetness, acidity, color, and overall fruit flavor, were evaluated by a consumer panel. The results indicated that irradiation induced changes in some of the quality parameters of blackberry fruits, as well as increased the fruit shelf-life.

Spinal Intradural Hematoma and Permanent Paraparesis after a Lumboperitoneal Shunt Operation: An Unusual Complication

        Recep Basaran,Mustafa Efendioglu,Fatih Han Bolukbasi,Sahin Aslan,Nejat Isik,Tuncay Kaner 대한척추외과학회 2014 Asian Spine Journal Vol.8 No.4

Pseudotumor cerebri is a condition of increased intracranial pressure in the absence of clinical, laboratory or radiological pathology. Spinal intradural hematoma formation after lumboperitoneal shunt (LPS) implantation is very rare, but it can cause sudden and serious deterioration. In this report, we present a patient who developed an intradural hematoma following LPS operation. A 27-year-old male patient suffering from headaches and progressive vision loss was diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri. He underwent LPS operation in January 2009. Four hours after the operation, he developed urinary and fecal incontinence with paraparesis (1/5). Lumbar magnetic resonance imaging identified an intradural hematoma at the level of L2–L3, and he was reoperated. The intradural hematoma was removed. Physical therapy was started because of paraparesis. Two months later, the patient’s muscle strength had increased to 3/5. Surgeons must remember that, LPS implantation can cause a spinal intradural hematoma in a small percentage of patients, with catastrophic results.

Efect of Irradiance Measurement Sensors on the Performance Ratio of Photovoltaic Power Plant Under Real Operating Conditions: An Experimental Assessment in Turkey

Kivanc Basaran 대한전기학회 2019 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.14 No.6

The performance analysis of photovoltaic (PV) plants plays an important role in making investment decisions, creating more efcient designs, and in the operation and maintenance decisions in new plants. In addition, performance analysis provides a way to identify real-time operational problems and allows comparisons among diferent PV plants. Performance of PV plants can be indexed with many parameters, but service providers are giving energy guarantees according to their performance ratio (PR). There are many factors that afect PR, such as irradiation, temperature, wind speed, humidity and soiling. But, the most important factors afecting PR are irradiation and temperature. Hence, both the irradiation and the temperature must be measured correctly. Solar irradiation is usually measured with a pyranometer or reference cell. However, there are diferences between the obtained data from these two sensors, which afects the PR signifcantly. In this study, the PR of an MW PV plant installed in Turkey was investigated. Two types of irradiation sensors (pyranometer and reference cells) and PVGIS program were used. The data were collected every 5 min during 1 year. The data passed through quality control and fltered process and some improper values were removed from the row data set. In addition, new data were written instead of the missing data. PR was calculated by using conventional and corrected method. As a result, the average annual PR is determined to be 81.05%, 79.04% and 78.96% and the corrected PR is determined to be 83.69%, 82.48% and 80.87% using the reference cell, pyranometer and PVGIS program, respectively

PVC and POM gripping mechanisms for tension testing of FRP bars

Bogachan Basaran,Harun Yaka,Ilker Kalkan 국제구조공학회 2021 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.77 No.1

The present study pertains to the introduction of two new types of grip adaptor for universal testing machines, namely Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and Polyoxymethylene (POM) grip adaptors, and their application to tension testing of FRP bars with different fiber and surface finish types. The tabs are connected to the FRP bar sample with the help of mechanical anchors, i.e. bolts. These new adaptors offer vital superiorities over the existing end tab designs (anchors with filling material or mechanical anchorage), including the reduction in the time and labor for production, reusability and the mild nature, i.e. low hardness of the tab material, which retards and even prevents peeling and crushing in the gripping regions of an FRP sample. The methods were successfully applied to FRP bars with different types of fiber (CFRP, GFRP and BFRP) and different types of surface texture (ribbed, wrapped, sand-coated and wound). The test results indicated that the both types of end caps prevented slip of the bar, crushing and peeling in the gripping zone. The mechanical properties from the material tests with the new caps were in perfect agreement with the ones from the material tests with steel tubular caps.

      • Comparison of Linear Accelerator and Helical Tomotherapy Plans for Glioblastoma Multiforme Patients

Koca, Timur,Basaran, Hamit,Sezen, Duygu,Karaca, Sibel,Ors, Yasemin,Arslan, Deniz,Aydin, Aysen Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.18

Background: Despite advances in radiotherapy, overall survival of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) patients is still poor. Moreover dosimetrical analyses with these newer treatment methods are insufficient. The current study is aimed to compare intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) linear accelerator (linac) and helical tomotherapy (HT) treatment plans for patients with prognostic aggressive brain tumors. Material and Methods: A total of 20 GBM patient plans were prospectively evaluated in both linac and HT planning systems. Plans are compared with respect to homogenity index, conformity index and organs at risk (OAR) sparing effects of the treatments. Results: Both treatment plans provided good results that can be applied to GBM patients but it was concluded that if the critical organs with relatively lower dose constraints are closer to the target region, HT for radiotherapeutical application could be preferred. Conclusion: Tomotherapy plans were superior to linear accelerator plans from the aspect of OAR sparing with slightly broader low dose ranges over the healthy tissues. In case a clinic has both of these IMRT systems, employment of HT is recommended based on the observed results and future re-irradiation strategies must be considered.
