Toxic hepatitis has been reported as a major cause of acute hepatitis, but its potential induction by herbal remedies and/or health foods is usually neglected. We experienced a case of toxic hepatitis associated with Polygoni multiflori, a Chinese herb commonly known as Ho-Shou-Wu. A 54-year-old woman consumed Ho-Shou-Wu for 1 month, after which she experienced fatigue and overall weakness. A diagnosis of toxic hepatitis was made based on her clinical history, the findings for viral markers and other laboratory data, and ultrasonography. Her condition improved considerably after she stopped taking Ho-Shou-Wu. However, she resumed taking Ho-Shou-Wu immediately after discharge from hospital, which aggravated her symptoms and liver function. She was immediately readmitted and stopped taking Ho-Shou-Wu. Her relapse into hepatitis immediate after resuming consumption of the herb is strongly indicative of the validity of Koch`s postulate in this case.

Banha (Pinellia ternata) is a herbal medicine which is composed of alkaloid substances, homegentisic acid, 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde and 3,4-diglycosilic benzaldehyde and is mainly prescribed in cough with dyspnea, gastric retention, distention and pain of the thorax and abdomen, lymph node tuberculosis, carbuncle, and furuncle. The use of raw Banha has been prohibited in pregnant woman because of it's strong toxicity. In this study, to investigate whether Banha affects the antioxidant system of male reproductive organs, we analyzed the mRNA expression patterns of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) family (type 1-4) in the reproductive organs of rats exposed to Banha. Banha extracts (0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, and 2 g/㎏ body weight) were treated to 6 week-old rats for 4 weeks per oral. Total RNAs were extracted from testis, epididymis, prostate, and seminal vesicle and then RT-PCR was perfomed with the specific primers of each GPx enzyme. In epididymis and prostate, GPx1 mRNA were decreased by Banha treatment except for 2 g/㎏ treatment in prostate. However, GPx1 mRNA in seminal vesicle was increased by Banha treatment. GPx2 mRNA was increased in testis and seminal vesicle. GPx4 (PHGPx) mRNA was decreased in seminal vesicles by 0.1 and 1 g/㎏ treatment of Banha. These findings indicate that Banha may affect the antioxidant system of male reproductive organs, although further study is necessary.

Background: Cutaneous lymphomas have different features with other lymphomas. The classification of cutaneous lymphoma has constantly been revised based on tumor cell biology and diagnostic techniques and WHO-EORTC published an updated classification in 2018. Objectives: We investigated the relative frequency and survival profiles of cutaneous lymphomas in Korea according to the revised 2018 WHO-EORTC classification. Methods: The medical records of patients diagnosed with cutaneous lymphoma were retrospectively reviewed. The demographic data and relative frequency were compared with the former study(2012) in the same institution and Western study. Results: Total 256 patients were enrolled in the analysis, 183 patients were classified to primary cutaneous lymphoma. The median age of onset was 49 and the sex ratio was 1:1.37(F:M). The 5-year survival rate of cutaneous lymphoma was 77.73%, primary cutaneous lymphoma was 84.15%, and secondary cutaneous lymphoma was 61.64%. The frequency was 85.25% for T/NK-cell lymphoma and 14.75% for B-cell lymphoma. Conclusion: The proportion of cutaneous T cell lymphoma, subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma, extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma nasal type, chronic EBV infection was higher than Western data. This result was the same as the former study, but the proportion was decreased.
A Study on Electro-optical Characteristics in Three Kinds of Liquid Crystal Display Operating Mode

In this study, we investigated response characteristics of liquid crystal display (LCD) with different operating mode of nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) such as 45 $^{circ} twisted nematic (TN), 67.3 $^{circ} TN and electrical controlled birefringence (ECB) on the rubbed polyimide (PI) surface with side chains. The pretilt angles generated on polyimide surfaces of the three kinds of LCD operating modes were about 12 $^{circ} that was higher than those of conventional TN-LCOs. Also, the Electro-optical (EO) performance of these LCOs showed stable condition. Low transmittance of the 45 $^{circ} TN and 67.3 $^{circ} TN cell on the rubbed PI surface were measured by using low cell gap d. The fast response time in ECB cell among the three kinds of LCD operating modes was achieved. Also, thermal ability of fast 90 $^{circ} TN-LCD was investigated. The threshold voltage and the response time of thermal stressed TN-LCOs showed the same performances on no thermal stressed TN-LCOs. There was little change of value in these TN cells. However, the transmittances of TN-LCOs on the rubbed PI surface decreased while increasing thermal stress time. Therefore, the thermal stability of TN-LCD was decreased by the high thermal stress for the long duration.

<P>The reversal effect of multidrug resistance (MDR1) gene expression by adenoviral vector-mediated MDR1 ribonucleic acid interference was assessed in a human colon cancer animal model using bioluminescent imaging with Renilla luciferase (Rluc) gene and coelenterazine, a substrate for Rluc or MDR1 gene expression. A fluorescent microscopic examination demonstrated an increased green fluorescent protein signal in Ad-shMDR1- (recombinant adenovirus that coexpressed MDR1 small hairpin ribonucleic acid [shRNA] and green fluorescent protein) infected HCT-15/Rluc cells in a virus dose-dependent manner. Concurrently, with an increasing administered virus dose (0, 15, 30, 60, and 120 multiplicity of infection), Rluc activity was significantly increased in Ad-shMDR1-infected HCT-15/Rluc cells in a virus dose-dependent manner. In vivo bioluminescent imaging showed about 7.5-fold higher signal intensity in Ad-shMDR1-infected tumors than in control tumors (p < .05). Immunohistologic analysis demonstrated marked reduction of P-glycoprotein expression in infected tumor but not in control tumor. In conclusion, the reversal of MDR1 gene expression by MDR1 shRNA was successfully evaluated by bioluminescence imaging with Rluc activity using an in vivo animal model with a multidrug resistance cancer xenograft.</P>
