‘Sport as a Resource Caravan’: Understanding How Adults Utilize Sport as a Developmental Tool
David W. Walsh,B. 2022 Journal of Global Sport Management Vol.7 No.4
Sport-for-development research consistently focuses on studies ofmacro level policy, meso level community development, andmicro level individual development. However, individual develop-ment has largely focused on positive youth development throughsport. Further, development outcomes have been studied withreference to a single program. This study examines the aggregatevalue of sport in development across the lifespan. Specifically, itexamines the role of sport to facilitate or hinder adaptation to lifetransitions. A life-history, thematic analysis with data from semi-structured interviews and life maps with 15 participants aged 50and older was conducted. Results revealed sport’s role as aneffective resource provider via social exchanges when participantsfaced a disruption caused by a life event transition. This is signifi-cant as sport may help provide access to scarce resources theor-ized to alter the fundamental developmental process of anindividual’s life-course (i.e. transitions). With this research, innova-tive sport designs and intentional sport management strategiesthat influence developmental trajectories in adults could emerge.Practical suggestions for program design and marketing are rec-ommended.

The main purpose of this study was to explore the motives for using sport media and their relationship to perceived outcomes of acculturation among Korean immigrants in the U.S. Employing a qualitative, Grounded Theory approach, a total of eighteen interviews were conducted and analyzed. Motives for using sport media were identified. Then the relationships between identified motives and perceived acculturative outcomes were examined using the theoretical framework of psychological adaptation and socio-cultural adaptation (Ward &Kennedy, 1999). It was found that Korean immigrants used ethnic and host sport media for hedonic reward, psychological benefit, social benefit, information seeking, mastery, and language. These findings support the functional perspectives of both use and gratification theory and uncertainty reduction theory. As a result, ethnic and host sport media served as a catalyst which facilitated psychological and socio-cultural adaptation into the host society by Korean immigrants in the U.S. These findings supported the host media effect paradigm as well as ethnic media functionalism. Finally, the effects of symbolic and emotional functions of ethnic and host sport media on acculturation are discussed.
Parental Roles in Children’s Sport Participation: Effects of Ethnicity and Immigration
Kyu-soo Chung,B. 2023 Journal of Global Sport Management Vol.8 No.4
Parents take on varied roles in their children’s sport, such as interpreters, provider, and model. These roles are enacted across settings, and impact the relationship families have with sport, and the value placed on sport vis-a-vis other contexts. This study looks at how Korean, Korean immigrant and Anglo-American parents carry out these roles, as the value parents place on their children’s education is controlled. One hundred forty-seven Korean parents in South Korea and 126 Korean immigrant and 112 Anglo-American parents in the U.S. provided answers to self-administered questionnaires regarding their supportive behavior children’s sport. The findings reveal the three differences in their encouragement, labor, and transportation provision; however, the findings reveal no difference in their modeling role. This study provides a theoretical understanding of how Korean immigrant parents affect their children’s sport participation, pointing to how social and cultural construction is reflected in their parenting and youth sport purchase decisions.
