Improvement Effects of Bottom Lateral Bracings on Dynamic Performance of Curved Steel Twin I-Girder Bridges under Running Vehicles

Md. Robiul Awall,Toshiro Hayashikawa,Xingwen He,Takashi Matsumoto 한국강구조학회 2013 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.13 No.2

The torsional stiffness of curved twin I-girder bridges is very low, which may lead to a vulnerability to eccentric dynamic loads. This study is intended to investigate the improvement effect of bottom lateral bracings on dynamic performance of curved twin I-girder bridges under running vehicles, using a developed numerical approach. In this approach, to conduct the running vehicle-bridge interaction analysis, finite element method is used to create the detailed models of both the curved bridge and the running vehicle. Parametric studies are carried out using these numerical models to investigate the effect of bottom lateral bracings on the dynamic performance of the curved bridge under running vehicles. The numerical results indicate that the proposed bottom lateral bracing systems can increase the torsional stiffness of the bridge, whose increasing rate depends on the type of bracing configuration. The bottom lateral bracings can also distribute dynamic loads smoothly between the two main girders, which leads to a more stable structure.

      • Distinction between Cold-sensitive and -tolerant Jute by DNA Polymorphisms

Hossain, Mohammad Belayat,Awal, Aleya,Rahman, Mohammad Aminur,Haque, Samiul,Khan, Haseena Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biol 2003 Journal of biochemistry and molecular biology Vol.36 No.5

Jute is the principal coarse fiber for commercial production and use in Bangladesh. Therefore, the development of a high-yielding and environmental-stress tolerant jute variety would be beneficial for the agro economy of Bangladesh. Two molecular fingerprinting techniques, random-amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and amplified-fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) were applied on six jute samples. Two of them were cold-sensitive varieties and the remaining four were cold-tolerant accessions. RAPD and AFLP fingerprints were employed to generate polymorphism between the cold-sensitive varieties and cold-tolerant accessions because of their simplicity, and also because there is no available sequence information on jute. RAPD data were obtained by using 30 arbitrary oligonucleotide primers. Five primers were found to give polymorphism between the varieties that were tested. AFLP fingerprints were generated using 25 combinations of selective-amplification primers. Eight primer combinations gave the best results with 93 polymorphic fragments, and they were able to discriminate the two cold-sensitive and four cold-tolerant jute populations. A cluster analysis, based on the RAPD and AFLP fingerprint data, showed the population-specific grouping of individuals. This information could be useful later in marker-aided selection between the cold-sensitive varieties and cold-tolerant jute accessions.

Effect of Medicated Block Licks on the Performance of Indigenous Dairy Cows of Bangladesh

        Rafiq, K.,Mostofa, M.,Awal, M.A.,Hossain, M.M. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2000 Animal Bioscience Vol.13 No.6

For this study three types of block such as medicated urea-molasses-mineral block (MUMMB, 7% urea), urea-molasses-mineral blocks ($UMMB_a$ 7% urea) and urea-molasses-mineral blocks ($UMMB_b$ 21% urea) were prepared. Naturally infested 24 indigenous dairy cows with gastrointestinal nematodes were used to study the effect of MUMMB, $UMMB_a$ and $UMMB_b$ on different parameters (body weight, milk yield, serum urea level, milk urea level). The cows were offered normal diet added with 250 g block per cow for every day. Straw and green grasses were used as basal diet in the ration. The managemental facilities for all cows of each group were similar. Cows were stall fed, calves were tied up at night and had free access to their dam during day time. Milking was done once daily in the morning. The daily average live weight gains by MUMMB, $UMMB_a$, $UMMB_b$, and control group (no block) were 52.08 g, 44.44 g, 48.58 g, and 1.41 g respectively. The live weight gain were statistically significant (p<0.01) in comparison to control group. The highest daily milk yield was observed in MUMMB treated cows (2.39 L/d); followed by $UMMB_b$ treated cows (1.82 L/d) and $UMMB_a$ treated cows (2.16 L/d). The lowest milk yield was found in control group (1.54 L/d). This result differs significantly (p<0.05) between treated groups and also with control group. During urea-molasses-mineral blocks $UMMB_a$, $UMMB_b$ licking milk urea level increased from initial $22.76{\pm}2.35mg/dl$ to $35.46{\pm}4.80mg/dl$ and initial $22.86{\pm}2.96mg/dl$ to $40.66{\pm}0.87mg/dl$ respectively. This variation of milk urea level was statistically significant (p<0.001). Similarly during $UMMB_a$, and $UMMB_b$ blocks licking, serum urea level increased in both treated groups from initial $22.76{\pm}2.60mg/dl$ to $32.68{\pm}2.21$ and initial $23.70{\pm}2.78mg/dl$ to $40.48{\pm}3.24mg/dl$, respectively. This variation of serum urea level was also statistically significant (p<0.001). Use of MUMMB instead of UMMB was proved better for milk production and live weight gain in dairy cows under the village condition of Bangladesh where balanced ration for dairy cows are a major scarcity. And various concentration of urea in blocks positively affect milk and serum urea levels of indigenous dairy cows.

Plant tissue culture-mediated biotechnological approaches in Lycium barbarum L. (Red goji or wolfberry)

Osman Nurul Izzati,Awal Asmah 한국원예학회 2023 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.64 No.4

Plant tissue culture has long evolved since its fi rst successful attempt by Gottlieb Haberlandt in 1902, and has then emerged as a powerful alternative approach in the breeding and conservation of various plant species. Extensive utilization of plant tissue culture has been documented in eff orts to improve plant production, as well as to conserve and breed endangered and hard-to-propagate plant species through plant biotechnology. Restrictions associated with certain growth requirements, such as geographic, seasonal, and climatic limitations, could be overcome through plant tissue culture, hence enabling the mass propagation of plant species all year round. In this article, studies on various plant biotechnological approaches to breed Lycium barbarum L. (red goji) through plant tissue culture are reviewed to highlight the effi ciency and usefulness of the plant tissue culture technique on red goji, summarizing the importance of biotechnology in plant studies.

Monitoring of thermal damages upon grinding of hardened steel using Barkhausen noise analysis

Ashish Srivastava,Akash Awale,Meghanshu Vashista,Mohd Zaheer Khan Yusufzai 대한기계학회 2020 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.34 No.5

Thermal damage restrict the capability of grinding in achieving the desired production rate; therefore, the present study focuses on the employment of a non-destructive Barkhausen noise (BN) technique in the assessment of thermal damages produced from grinding of hardened IS 2062 steel under dry (no lubrication) and wet (with lubrication) conditions. Optical microscopy along with microhardness measurement was utilized to reveal the microstructural and hardness alternation occurred in the ground and subsurface of sample. X- ray diffraction peak shift was measured and used for qualitative analysis of residual stress. Furthermore, surface topography was obtained by scanning electron microscope. The magnetic response from ground surface were measured in terms of Barkhausen noise (root mean square) and hysteresis loop (average permeability). The result shows very poor magnetic response from ground hardened steel due to higher carbon content. A non-linear variation is observed between peak shift and root mean square value of Barkhausen noise. However, average permeability derived from hysteresis loop shows good correlation with the peak shift with a correlation coefficient of approximately 0.8149.

      • Antioxidant and hepatoprotective action of the crude ethanolic extract of the flowering top of Rosa damascena

        Alam, MA,Nyeem, MAB,Awal, MA,Mostofa, M,Alam, MS,Subhan, N,Rahman, M Mostafizur Kyung Hee Oriental Medicine Research Center 2008 Oriental pharmacy and experimental medicine Vol.8 No.2

The hepatoprotective activity of the alcoholic extract of Rosa damascena was studied against paracetamol induced acute hepatotoxicity in rats. Liver damage was assessed by estimating serum enzyme activities of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and histopathology of liver tissue. Pre- and post-treatment with ethanolic extracts showed a dose-dependent reduction of paracetamol induced elevated serum levels of enzyme activity. The mechanism underlying the protective effects was assayed in vitro and the R. damascena extracts displayed dosedependent free radical activity using DPPH ($IC_{50}=162.525\;{\mu}g/ml$) and TBA method. The hepatoprotective action was confirmed by histopathological observation. The ethanolic extracts reversed paracetamol induced liver injury. These results suggest that the hepatoprotective effects of R. damascena extracts are related to its antioxidative activity.
