Limoniinae crane flies(Diptera: Limoniidae) new to Korea II

Korean species of Atypophthalmus Brunetti, 1911 and Thrypticomyia Skuse, 1890 crane flies (Diptera: Limoniidae) were taxonomically revised. New findings of Achyrolimonia Alexander, 1965, Helius Lepeletier and Serville, 1828 (Latreille et al., 1828) and Limonia Meigen, 1803 were discussed. Genera Atypophthalmus and Thrypticomyia, species Helius(Helius) flavus(Walker, 1856) were newly recorded for the Korean Peninsula, and Achyrolimonia neonebulosa (Alexander, 1924) and Limonia juvenca Alexander, 1935 were new records for North Korea. Male terminalia of L. episema Alexander, 1924 were described with detailed photographs. Identification keys, re-descriptions and illustrations of both sexes from all species in Korea were presented.

Short-palped crane flies belonging to the genus Epiphragma Osten Sacken, 1860 (Diptera: Limoniidae: Limnophilinae) have a worldwide distribution except the Afrotropics, with the highest diversity in Neotropics and Oriental Region. They are divided into four subgenera: Eupolyphragma Alexander, 1948, Epiphragma s. str., Lipophragma Alexander, 1978, and Parepiphragma Alexander, 1960. Diagnostic characters and wing photographs of all subgenera are given. Genus Epiphragma was previously unknown from the Korean Peninsula. Species Epiphragma (Epiphragma) gracilistylus Alexander, 1933 is newly recorded for North Korea, E. (E.) subfascipenne Alexander, 1920 is newly recorded for South and North Korea, and E. (E.) subinsigne Alexander, 1920 is newly recorded for South Korea. These species are taxonomically revised, and the taxonomic status of E. (E.) gracilistylus is discussed. We present an identification key and redescriptions and illustrations of both sexes from all species in Korea. Redescription of larva and pupa of E.(E.) subfascipenne is presented. Elevation range, period of activity, habitat information, general distribution, and a distribution map in Korean Peninsula is given for each species.

New data on Limoniinae and Limnophilinae crane flies (Diptera: Limoniidae) of Korea

This study is based on crane fly specimens collected from 1936-2019 and are in collections maintained at the United States National Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, USA; the Snow Entomological Museum, University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS, USA; the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest, Hungary, and the National Institute of Biological Resources, Incheon, South Korea. The genus Dicranophragma Osten Sacken, 1860 with two species D. (Brachylimnophila) transitorium (Alexander, 1941) and D. (Dicranophragma) melaleucum melaleucum (Alexander, 1933), is a new record for the Korean Peninsula. New findings of Dicranomyia (Erostrata) submelas Kato et al., 2018, Dicranoptycha venosa Alexander, 1924a, Austrolimnophila (Archilimnophila) subunicoides(Alexander, 1950b), A. (A.) unica (Osten Sacken, 1869), A. (Austrolimnophila) asiatica (Alexander, 1925), Conosia irrorata (Wiedemann, 1828), Eloeophila persalsa (Alexander, 1940), E. serenensis (Alexander, 1940), E. subaprilina (Alexander, 1919), E. ussuriana ussuriana (Alexander, 1933), E. yezoensis (Alexander, 1924b), Paradelphomyia chosenica Alexander, 1950b, and P. macracantha Alexander, 1957 are discussed. General information on genera and subgenera morphological characters, redescriptions of species based on Korean specimens, illustrations of both sexes, elevation range, period of activity, habitat information, general distribution, and a distribution map for the Korean Peninsula (including North Korea) are presented for each species.
