        Wetlands perform various functions of vital socio-ecological significance playing fundamental role in moderating monsoon tidal floods and coastal protection and generate goods and products such as fish and forest resources. The depletion of mangroves is a cause of serious environmental and economic concern to many developing countries. Problems of sustainability of mangrove ecosystems are not only technical but also socio-economic. Functions played by mangrove wetlands are of fundamental importance for society. The present study aims to identify the challenges of the mangrove wetlands of Southeast coast of Chittagong, their uses and socio-economic influence on local people, and the value of ecosystem services, and to suggest how to conserve this ecosystem in a more equitable way.

        Improvement in DRX Power Saving for Non-real-time Traffic in LTE

        A discontinuous reception (DRX) operation is included in the Long Term Evolution (LTE) system to achieve power saving and prolonged battery life of the user equipment. An improvement in DRX power saving usually leads to a potential increase in the packet delay. An optimum DRX configuration depends on the current traffic, which is not easy to estimate accurately, particularly for non-real-time applications. In this paper, we propose a novel way to vary the DRX cycle length, avoiding a continuous estimation of the data traffic when only non-real-time applications are running with no active real-time applications. Because a small delay in non-real-time traffic does not essentially impact the user’s experience adversely, we deliberately allow a limited amount of delay in our proposal to attain a significant improvement in power saving. Our proposal also improves the delay in service resumption after a long period of inactivity. We use a stochastic analysis assuming an M/G/1 queue to validate this improvement.

        Relationship Between Vitamin D Status and Brain Perfusion in Neuropsychiatric Lupus

        Purpose Neuropsychiatric manifestation of lupus (NPSLE) is related with vitamin D (vit-D) deficiency which is possibly amenable to supplementation. This study was done to explore link of serum vit-D level and clinical mini-mental state examination (MMSE) with brain perfusion SPECT (BS) in patients with NPSLE. Methods Patients who underwent BS with the diagnosis of NPSLE and had serum levels of vit-D andMMSE within a span of 1 month were retrospectively included. The BS DICOM data were used to generate 3D surface images of brain for visual identification of regional hypoperfusion, and the z-scores from eZIS software and then to performvoxel-based regression analysis in order to explore association between serum vit-D level and cerebral perfusion deficit using SPM8. Distribution of serum vit-D level was checked across MMSE and BS z-score using R. Results A total 19 patients with means ± SD age of 28.4 ± 9.2 years, having mean levels of serum vit-D of 18.7 ± 9.8 ng/ml and meanMMSE scores 24.2 ± 1.6, had undergone BS. The eZIS-derived z-score fall in the category of normal in six (31.6%), mild perfusion deficit (PD) in 10 (52.6%) and moderate PD in three (15.8%) with the means ± SD of z-score being 0.52 ± 0.2, 1.72 ± 0.2, and 2.33 ± 0.2. Voxel-based analysis revealed significant positive correlation between vit-D level and hypoperfusion in brain regions related to cognitive function (p<0.05). Serum vit-D levels were significantly lower in NPSLE patients with lowerMMSE scores as well as in higher eZIS z-score (p < 0.01). Conclusions Our results may support the utility of vit-D supplementation in NPSLE and applicability of BS as a clinical adjunct for monitoring response to vit-D supplementation.

        RNA Colony Blot Hybridization Method for Enumeration of Culturable Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio mimicus Bacteria

        <B>ABSTRACT</B><P>A species-specific RNA colony blot hybridization protocol was developed for enumeration of culturable <I>Vibrio cholerae</I> and <I>Vibrio mimicus</I> bacteria in environmental water samples. Bacterial colonies on selective or nonselective plates were lysed by sodium dodecyl sulfate, and the lysates were immobilized on nylon membranes. A fluorescently labeled oligonucleotide probe targeting a phylogenetic signature sequence of 16S rRNA of <I>V. cholerae</I> and <I>V. mimicus</I> was hybridized to rRNA molecules immobilized on the nylon colony lift blots. The protocol produced strong positive signals for all colonies of the 15 diverse <I>V. cholerae</I>-<I>V. mimicus</I> strains tested, indicating 100% sensitivity of the probe for the targeted species. For visible colonies of 10 nontarget species, the specificity of the probe was calculated to be 90% because of a weak positive signal produced by <I>Grimontia</I> (<I>Vibrio</I>) <I>hollisae</I>, a marine bacterium. When both the sensitivity and specificity of the assay were evaluated using lake water samples amended with a bioluminescent <I>V. cholerae</I> strain, no false-negative or false-positive results were found, indicating 100% sensitivity and specificity for culturable bacterial populations in freshwater samples when <I>G. hollisae</I> was not present. When the protocol was applied to laboratory microcosms containing <I>V. cholerae</I> attached to live copepods, copepods were found to carry approximately 10,000 to 50,000 CFU of <I>V. cholerae</I> per copepod. The protocol was also used to analyze pond water samples collected in an area of cholera endemicity in Bangladesh over a 9-month period. Water samples collected from six ponds demonstrated a peak in abundance of total culturable <I>V. cholerae</I> bacteria 1 to 2 months prior to observed increases in pathogenic <I>V. cholerae</I> and in clinical cases recorded by the area health clinic. The method provides a highly specific and sensitive tool for monitoring the dynamics of <I>V. cholerae</I> in the environment. The RNA blot hybridization protocol can also be applied to detection of other gram-negative bacteria for taxon-specific enumeration.</P>
