Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus is a complex systemic autoimmune disease, with numerous immunologic and clinical manifestations. It is considered as the prototype of autoimmune disease and it is characterized by the production of a wide series of autoantibodies as well as by a variable clinical presentation. Purpose of our study was to evaluate the impact of immunological tests in disease activity in patientswith systemic lupus erythematosus Methods: We analyzed 80 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. The laboratory tests requested for the patients such as: anti-nuclear antibody test, anti double stranded DNA antibody, complement levels and antiphospholipid antibody. Lupus activity was assessed according to systemic lupus erythematosus Disease Activity Index. Patients are divided into three groups which were mild, moderate and severe based ondisease activity index. Results: Patients with positive anti-nuclear antibody were 74 (92. 5 %), anti-ds DNA antibody positive were 52 ( 65 %) patients, low complement levels were 36 (45 %) patients and antiphospholipid antibody were 22 (27. 5 %) patients. Patients with severe disease were 42 (52. 5 %), moderate disease were 20 (25 %) patients and mild disease was 18 (22. 5 %) patients. We found correlation between immunological alterations and disease activity. Conclusions: Immunological alterations are important factor in disease activity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and may help physician to evaluate prognosis in systemic lupus erythematosus patients.

This paper presents a concept of span structure of a military bridge in which screws were used in assembly of sway braces. This type of sway braces assembly requires holes in main girders that weaken their structure. Especially holes located in the stretch zone of these girders can become a place of stress concentration, and very soon can become a place of fatigue crack initiation. The paper presents also an optimization of the location and size of the mounting holes in the steel girders of non-standard fixed bridges due to their impact on the final durability and stability of structures. To numerical analysis, there was normal IPN 400 steel I-beam adopted with a total length equal to 5.60 m. The analysed issue was related to the optimization of the structures, namely the location of the mounting holes – specifically to their endurance. The analysis showed that the location of the holes according to the proposed in this article scheme it seems to be also the optimal solution. The obtained conclusions apply to both steel I-beams and C-sections with heights ranging from 300 to 500 mm, as the most commonly used for the construction of non-standard fixed bridges.

The analysis of the development of fatigue cracks conducted using a computer program requires a simple 2D surface model to be applied. The paper presents an example of creating four calculation models of a steel girder, two of which have been implemented in FRANC2D software. A 400 mm-high and 5.60 m-long steel I-beam was studied. Analysis of the development of fatigue cracks around the I-beam fastener holes was conducted for two selected computation models. What has been obtained as the result of the analysis was an answer to the question about the influence of the location of fastener holes on the propagation rate of hypothetical fatigue cracks. This answer was obtained indirectly, i.e. through the analysis of the value of stress intensity factor K.

Recently laser scanning technologies become widely used in many areas of the modern economy. In the following paper authors show a potential spectrum of use Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) in diagnostics of reinforced concrete elements. Based on modes of failure analysis of reinforcement concrete beam authors describe downsides and advantages of adaptation of terrestrial laser scanning to this purpose, moreover reveal under which condition this technology might be used. Research studies were conducted by Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Gdansk University of Technology. An experiment involved bending of reinforced concrete beam, the process was registered by the terrestrial laser scanner. Reinforced concrete beam was deliberately overloaded and eventually failed by shear.Whole failure process was tracing and recording by scanner Leica ScanStation C10 and verified by synchronous photographic registration supported by digital photogrammetry methods. Obtained data were post-processed in Leica Cyclone (dedicated software) and MeshLab (program on GPL license). The main goal of this paper is to prove the effectiveness of TLS in diagnostics of reinforced concrete elements. Authors propose few methods and procedures to virtually reconstruct failure process, measure geometry and assess a condition of structure.

The objective of the present study was to monitor and characterize morphological alterations in ovaries of agouti (Dasyprocta prymnolopha), reared in captivity, by using abdominal ultrasonography. All animals underwent daily vaginal cytological examination to identify the current cycle phase. For each phase of the estrous cycle, ultrasound examinations were carried out to identify and describe the morphology of both ovaries. Topographic parameters in an ultrasound window were established to locate the ovaries. The agouti estrous cycle lasted an average of 29.94 ± 6.77 days. During vaginal cytology examinations, all cell types were identified, and each phase of the estrous cycle was established by cell counts. No significant alterations were observed in the assessed ovarian morphometry measurements. In 75% of the animals examined, ovarian follicle presence was observed in the proestrus phase.

Systematic studies of excitonic lines in the strong excitation regime were carried out by using a pump-probe method. Several samples containing quantum wells with different well widths (from 80 Å to 160 Å) were investigated. Most of the quantum wells were intentionally undoped but contained a 2D gas of free holes. The density of the free holes could be varied by changing the intensity of additional illumination. After resonant excitation of the heavy-hole exciton ground state by using an intense pump pulse we observed changes in the heavy- and the light-hole exciton lines. The resonant creation of a high population of e1hh1 excitons caused energetic blue shifts of the e1lh1 excitons. The blue shift in the experiment with opposite circularly-polarized pump and probe pulses could be explained as an interaction of electrons of the same spin bounded into the e1hh1 and the e1lh1 excitons. Model calculations of absorption showed qualitative agreement with the experimental data.

Cymbopogon citratus, an herb known worldwide as lemongrass, is widely consumed as an aromatic drink, and its fresh and dried leaves are currently used in traditional cuisine. However, little is known about the mechanism of action of C. citratus, namely, the anti-inflammatory effects of its dietary components. Because nitric oxide (NO), produced in large quantities by activated inflammatory cells, has been demonstrated to be involved in the pathogenesis of acute and chronic inflammation, we evaluated the effects of the infusion of dried leaves from C. citratus, as well as its polyphenolic fractions—flavonoid-, tannin-, and phenolic acid-rich fractions (FF, TF, and PAF, respectively)—on the NO production induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in a skin-derived dendritic cell line (FSDC). C. citratus infusion significantly inhibited the LPS-induced NO production and inducible NO synthase (iNOS) protein expression. All the polyphenolic fractions tested also reduced the iNOS protein levels and NO production stimulated by LPS in FSDC cells, without affecting cell viability, with the strongest effects being observed for the fractions with mono- and polymeric flavonoids (FF and TF, respectively). Our results also indicated that the anti-inflammatory properties of FF are mainly due to luteolin glycosides. In conclusion, C. citratus has NO scavenging activity and inhibits iNOS expression and should be explored for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, in particular of the gastrointestinal tract.

The proper implementation of a transport process is influenced among others, by vehicles, which carry construction materials stored in warehouses and on construction sites. During performing transport undertakings related to the logistic support of various types of construction investments one often has to deal with tasks linked to the need of multi-criterial decision-making. The paper puts forward a proposal for a simple optimisation method, while making an assessment of its pros and cons at the same time. An important advantage of the proposed method is that it has a simple and transparent calculation algorithm. It is therefore recommendable to apply in engineering practice. In the optimisation process, coefficients of importance of each criterion allow account to be taken of individual preferences of a decision maker. Thus, they are one of the key elements of this process. In this paper the DEMATEL method was applied to calculate these coefficients. Currently in Poland there are several well-known and recognised companies specialising in the sale of trucks, yet in this work only Volvo vehicles were taken into consideration in analyses.
