Plasma-Assisted Green Synthesis of ZnO Directly on Polyethylene Terephthalate Fabric

        Anja Verbič,Katja Brenčič,Gregor Primc,Miran Mozetič,Martin Šala,Marija Gorjanc 한국섬유공학회 2023 Fibers and polymers Vol.24 No.1

This article presents green in situ synthesis of ZnO directly on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabrics using pomegranatepeel extract. The surface of PET was activated by environmentally friendly oxygen plasma, and the process was comparedto alkali treatment where the extract of wood ash was used instead of classical chemicals. Sorption analysis showed that thehydrophilic character of the plasma-treated sample was much better than that of the alkali-treated and untreated samples. Both treatments slightly decreased the breaking strength and elongation of the fabric. Scanning electron microscopy, colourmeasurements, dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and antioxidant activity investigations showed that the ZnO particles were successfullysynthesised on alkali- and plasma-treated PET. The liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry results showed thatellagic acid and punicalagin were the most abundant compounds in the pomegranate peel extract that enabled the synthesisof ZnO. The UV protection, amount of ZnO, and uniformity were the highest for the ZnO prepared on the PET samples bythe plasma-assisted green synthesis. Additional optical assessment of fabric porosity and thickness measurements confirmedthat these fabrics have excellent UV protection due to the presence of ZnO.

Bariatric surgery for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: Indications and post-operative management

Anja Geerts,Sander Lefere 대한간학회 2023 Clinical and Molecular Hepatology(대한간학회지) Vol.29 No.-

The prevalence of obesity and metabolic consequences such as nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD) has become a crucial health problem. Lifestyle modifications, especially weight loss, effectively reduces liver injury in NAFLD patients. However, adherence to lifestyle changes is very low in the clinical setting. Bariatric surgery can improve metabolic components and cause long-term weight loss. Therefore, bariatric surgery could serve as an attractive treatment option for NAFLD patients. This review integrates data about the benefits of bariatric surgery on NAFLD but also describes the potential pitfalls.

Vol.60 No.4

Recent Research on Bronze Age Hillforts near Rovinj, Istria

2018 The Mediterranean Review Vol.11 No.2

Istria in the Caput Adriae is for the Bronze Age research of the Mediterranean area a still rather unexplored area. Although the location of several hundred settlement sites known as gradina has been registered, only a small number of them has been examined in more depth through archaeological excavations. The present article introduces the latest, albeit preliminary results of a research project that aims to get a more balanced picture of the Bronze Age settlement system in the region around the modern town of Rovinj. In course of the project three settlements which are located next to the sea and in closer vicinity to the only extensively researched site of the peninsula have been surveyed and examined. The results seem to suggest that all settlements were occupied synchronously and protected by a fortification. The latter fact questions the prevalent notion of a strictly hierarchical settlement system in the region.

      • What Drives Institutional Reforms in Regional Organisations? Diffusion, Contextual Conditions, and the Modular Design of ASEAN

2017 TRaNS(Trans –Regional and –National Studies of Sou Vol.5 No.1

What drives institutional reforms in regional organisations? And what explains the institutional design of ASEAN? Despite many differences, conventional approaches to the institutional design of regional organisations more generally and ASEAN in particular are united in regarding them as either determined by factors endogenous to the region − such as varying state interests or collective norms − or as exogenously driven, most importantly by hegemonic states like the US or China. This article offers a diffusion account of ASEAN’s institutional design. Building on a more recent strand in the diffusion literature emphasising that diffusion rarely leads to convergence, the article makes two genuine contributions. First, it argues that members of regional organisations engage in modular adoption: they select institutional templates from a variety of regional as well as international organisations thereby taking advantage of available information on the costs and benefits of alternative institutions. Second, it argues that contextual conditions and cognitive priors influence what templates are chosen. The argument will be illustrated with a case study on ASEAN's adoption of a single market and a dispute settlement mechanism. Finally, and contrary to arguments that institutional borrowing might increase the expectations- deliverance gap within regional organisations, it argues that if conducted consistently, modular adoption can lead to substantial innovation and success.

Horse, Bow and Arrow -A Comparison between the Scythian Impact on the Mediterranean and on Eastern Middle Europe

2014 The Mediterranean Review Vol.7 No.1

An often discussed group of artefacts are the so-called “Scythian arrowheads” ? small three-winged arrowheads with a shaft, sometimes with barb, cast in bronze. Finds in large quantities are known from the Northern Pontic, today’s Ukrainian and Russian territories, Asia Minor, the Near East, Eastern Middle Europe and the Greek mainland. Considering their widespread distribution, researchers were often sceptical concerning their value for answering cultural-historic or chronological questions. New research shows that the “Scythian arrowheads” especially can be used as a tool for reconstructing historical events. In this article the finds of Scythian arrowheads from Greece and from Eastern Middle Europe will be highlighted to discuss the varying connections between the different regions in the Early Iron Age.

MEDITERRANEAN REVIEW : Apotropaic Elements on Ceramics from the Early and Middle Bronze Age in the Northern Adriatic Region (Caput Adriae)

2015 The Mediterranean Review Vol.8 No.1

In the Early and Middle Bronze Age, the Istrian peninsula as the northern periphery of the “Mediterranean cultural sphere” was characterized by a dense population with fortified mountain settlements (“Gradine” in the Croatian language). In these settlements a distinctive decorated pottery has been discovered, until recently completely unknown. One group of these vessels, namely, large jars for food storage, is distinguished by a decoration with combined plastic and incised ornaments with antithetically arranged handles on all four sides, which follows a certain order and allows the recognition of stylized faces. In light of other depictions in prehistory and early history, the appearance of “monster” and “grotesque” representations on medieval churches, and studies on recent cultures, we can assume that the “scary faces” on the Bronze Age pottery of Istria had some kind of apotropaic meaning. Something similar can be assumed for a particular embellishment of the spherical bottles that were also typical of the fortified mountain settlements of the Istrian peninsula.
