A Tale of Two Networks: Contrasting Sport for Development and Peace Actor-Networks

André Richelieu,Andrew Webb 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2019 Journal of Global Sport Management Vol.4 No.4

This study highlights the convergence, contrasts, and coherence between two sport for development and peace (SDP) actornetworks. Overall, some coherence, but much contrast, between academic and practitioner actor-networks is demonstrated. The lack of theoretical knowledge about how and why practitioners construct actor-networks is also emphasized. Moreover, important academic questions—such as why scholars’ understanding of actor-networks are based on a dominant, yet questionable, vision of how sport influences development and peace—are raised. Critical perspectives about the theoretical underpinnings of sport for development and peace and the influence that shifting funding priorities have on sport for development and peace actor-networks are brought to the fore.

The creation of a body donation program at Federal University of Juiz de Fora in Brazil: academic importance, challenges and donor profile

        André , Gustavo Fernandes de Oliveira,Augusto Ferreira Gonç , alves , Jú , lia Nunes Soares,Letí , cia Henriques Neto Salgado,Bruno Silveira Santana,Matheus Venâ,ncio Passos,Juliana Lopes de Oliveira 대한해부학회 2021 Anatomy & Cell Biology Vol.54 No.4

Dissection and human specimens study remain the gold standard method for teaching anatomy. Due to the increasing health science courses in Brazil, the traditional way of obtaining bodies for scientific purposes, the unclaimed ones, became insufficient. In addition, this source is no longer ethically appropriate according to anatomists. In order to maintain the teaching quality, the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) in Brazil, inspired by successful initiatives around the world, created a body donation program; Sempre Vivo. Besides the bureaucratic difficulty faced during its regulation, the implementation of a body donation program requires special attention regarding the religiosity, culture and uniqueness of the city s inhabitants. Informing people can demystify the process, avoid prejudice and increase the number of donors. In this way, an outreach project was designed to publicize Sempre Vivo and raise public awareness. In the first six years, Sempre Vivo reached the mark of 64 registered donors and seven bodies received. The donor’s profile corresponds to female (70.3%), 57 years of age, retired (50.8%), spiritist (53.1%) and with 12 years or more of formal education (90.6%). Considering that the UFJF has not received unclaimed bodies for ten years, the program was considered satisfactory up to this level and, in the future, it may be the exclusive source of anatomical specimens. The description of the creation and the publicizing of Sempre Vivo, the overcome challenges, as well as the donors’ profile, may encourage and facilitate the foundation of similar programs in Brazil and abroad.

Optimization of steel-concrete composite beams considering cost and environmental impact

Andréia Fátima Tormen,Zacarias Martin Chamberlain Pravia,Fernando Busato Ramires,Moacir Kripka 국제구조공학회 2020 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.34 No.3

In the optimized structure sizing, the optimization methods are inserted in this context in order to obtain satisfactory solutions, which can provide more economical structures, besides allowing the consideration of the factors related to the environmental impacts in the structural design. This work proposes a mathematical model for the optimization of steel-concrete composite beams aiming to minimize the monetary cost and the environmental impact, using the Harmonic Search optimization method. Discrete variables were the dimensions of the steel profiles and the thickness of the collaborating slab of the composite steel-concrete beam. The proposed model was implemented in Fortran programming language and based on improvements in the structure of the optimization method proposed by Medeiros and Kripka (2017). To prove the effectiveness and applicability of the model, as well as the Harmonic Search method, analyzes were performed with different configurations of steel-concrete composite beams, in order to provide guidelines that make the use of these systems more streamlined. In general, the Harmonic Search optimization method has proved to be efficient in the search for the optimized solutions, as well as important considerations on the optimization of the monetary and environmental costs of steel-concrete composite beams were obtained from the developed examples.

Santos Populares no Brasil: Catolicismo e Misticismo

        André Corrêa Rollo 한국 포르투갈-브라질 학회 2009 포르투갈-브라질 연구 Vol.6 No.1

The Brazilian Catholicism exhibits several mystical elements which show the influence of miscigenation on religion, language and culture. During the Portuguese colonization, the Catholic cult was impenetrable to the most of people. To surpass linguistic obstacles set by the Latin, white, black and indian associated ancient beliefs and external displays of faith (as processions) in order to take part in the religion. This blend of different elements resulted in religious syncretism. The legends about saints' supernatural abilities, besides the comparison between African divinities created a good environment to a great cult of Saints and the powers attributed to them. Among the most popular saints in Brazil are Saint Anthony, the twins Cosmas and Damian and Saint George. Despite the fact that nowadays Catholic Mass and rites are spoken in Portuguese, this belief in personal contact with the supernatural sphere of religion is common in Brazilian everyday life, being the prayers and the procession the climax of religious feeling. The best-known Portuguese saint, Anthony (born Fernando de Bulhões) carries a series of legends around his life and abilities. Born in Lisbon in 1195, Anthony died in Italy in 1231. His worshippers believe he helps people to find lost things, to find a love, to help someone to marry, to protect animals and so on. George was a soldier to the Roman Empire during the reign of Diocletian, Emperor who persecuted Cristians. He was converted to Chritianity and was tortured and beheaded. The martyrdom of George occured in April, the 23 th in 303 A.D. This date is his feast day. In Brazil, Saint George is largely associated to the African orishacalled Ogun. The Warrior Saint is invoked as protector from all kinds of evil. The twins Cosmas and Damian were born in Arabia in the 3rd century AD and were executed around 287 AD. In Brazil , Cosmas and Damian were associated by the African entities called ibeijis, being regarded as protectors of children. Their feast day is celebrated in the Roman Catholic Church in September 26 since 1969, but their believers continue to celebrate the former date, September 27. The afro-religious temples use to receive children in order to bless them and offer candies for them. In the big cities take place many Festas de Cosme e Damião . Besides this, many common people use to informally, outside any cult, offer childrenlittle toys and candies in the streets or even organize feasts by their own. According to the tradition, to please a child makes Cosmas and Damian (or the African entities) bring good luck to the host. The oldest church in Brazil (built in Igarassu, Pernambuco, in 1535) was honored to the twins.

In Vitro Performance of Injectable Chitosan-Tripolyphosphate Scaffolds Combined with Platelet-Rich Plasma

Andréa Arruda Martins Shimojo,Sofia Elisa Moraga Galdames,Amanda Gomes Marcelino Perez,Thiago Heiji Ito,Ângela Cristina Malheiros Luzo,Maria Helena Andrade Santana 한국조직공학과 재생의학회 2016 조직공학과 재생의학 Vol.13 No.1

This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro biological effectiveness of chitosan microparticles crosslinked with sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) in combination with activated pure platelet-rich plasma (aP-PRP) as an injectable composite scaffold for growth factors release, cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation. Two main novelties were addressed in the field of scaffolds in regenerative medicine: the first is the approach including simultaneously the three vertices of the proliferation triangle formed by the capabilities genic progenitor cells, conductive scaffolds and inductive growth factors, which are provided by platelet rich plasma (PRP); secondly, the approach of an injectable composite scaffolds formed by the fibrin network from aP-PRP and the chitosan microparticles crosslinked with TPP. The microparticles were prepared by vortexing the chitosan and TPP solutions. The ionic crosslinking of chitosan with TPP was made at mass ratios of 2:1, 5:1, and 10:1 at pH 4.0. P-PRP was obtained via the controlled centrifugation of whole blood. The composite scaffolds were prepared by adding the microparticles to immediately activated P-PRP. The results showed that the microparticles had adequate physicochemical and mechanical properties for injection. Furthermore, the microparticles controlled the release of growth factors from P-PRP. The proliferation of human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells was lower than in aP-PRP alone but significant at a 2:1 chitosan-TPP mass ratio. Osteogenic differentiation was stimulated at all studied mass ratios, as indicated by the alkaline phosphatase activity. These results offer perspectives for optimizing the composite scaffold, and to prove its potential as an injectable scaffold in regenerative medicine.

Preemptive Analgesia with Acupuncture Monitored by c-Fos Expression in Rats

        André T.A. Gonçalves de Freitas,Lino Lemonica,Julio De Faveri,Sergio Pereira,Maria D. Bedoya Henao 사단법인약침학회 2016 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.9 No.1

Pain behavior and awareness are characterized by heightened alertness and anxiety, which begin to disappear as soon as the curative process starts. The present study aimed to quantify c-fos expression in rat spinal cords and brains after a surgical stimulus and with preoperative or postoperative acupuncture. Animals were randomly divided into preoperative and postoperative groups and were then further divided into control, manual acupuncture (MA), or electroacupuncture (EA) groups. Expression of c-fos was quantified using immunohistochemistry. The collected data were analyzed using the t test at a 5% probability level. Presurgery and postsurgery spinal cord c-fos expressions were similar in all of the treatment groups. In the control rats, c-fos expression was higher before surgery than after surgery, contradicting the expected outcome of acupuncture and preemptive analgesia. After treatment, the expression of c-fos in the brains of the rats in the MA and the EA groups was reduced compared with that of the rats in the control group. These findings suggest that acupuncture used as preemptive analgesia in rats is a useful model for studying its application in human treatment.

Evaluation of the Mechanical and Fire Resistance Properties ofRigid Tannin Polyurethane Foams with Copper Oxide Nanoparticles

        Andrés Díaz-Gomez,Mytzy Godoy,María Elizabeth Berrio,Jesús Ramirez,Andrés Felipe Jaramillo,Carlos Medina,Mary Montaño,Manuel Francisco Meléndrez 한국섬유공학회 2022 Fibers and polymers Vol.23 No.7

In this study, a polymerized polyurethane foam was formulated from tannins extracted from Pinus radiata aspolyol, and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) at a concentration of 2 % w/w as a nucleating agent. This produced areinforced foam with better mechanical properties and fire resistance. The impact of the addition of CuO-NPs on themechanical and thermal properties of the tannin foam was also studied. The properties studied were foaming process, foamdensity, cell morphology, flammability and thermal conductivity. The results revealed that the CuO-NPs incorporated in thefoam formulation act as nucleation centers, which decrease the pore size, strengthen the cell walls, and improve mechanicalproperties. The tannin samples showed good thermal resistance performance with a limit oxygen index (LOI) higher than21 %. The results obtained were contrasted with two foams, a commercial foam (SoudaFoam) and a foam generated with thesame dissociate, but with a commercial polyol (LHT-112). The foam with NPs had an elastic modulus of 3.7 MPa and stress(max) of 1.13 MPa, which was higher than those of the foams used as controls.

Metabolic adjustment of the larval fat body in Hermetia illucens to dietary conditions

        André Coppe Pimentel,Aurora Montali,Daniele Bruno,Gianluca Tettamanti 한국응용곤충학회 2017 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.20 No.4

The black soldier fly (BSF), Hermetia illucens, has great economic importance because of its ability to degrade a wide variety of organic products, including vegetable waste. The conversion of organic waste into valuable nutrients, that can be isolated from larvae and prepupae, is a widely exploited strategy to produce protein for animal feed and, consequently, comprehending the mechanisms that regulate nutrient accumulation in this insect could improve the production of insect-derived meal quantitatively and qualitatively. Since the fat body participates in metabolizing proteins, fat, and sugars in insects, detailed knowledge of this organ and of its modifications in relation to insect food intake could provide interesting clues about the nutritional value of the larvae, a fundamental aspect from an applied perspective. To this end, we performed a morphofunctional and molecular characterization of the fat body of sixth instar H. illucens larvae reared on different food substrates, focusing on markers related to nutrient accumulation. We demonstrate that a protein-poor diet affects both lipid and protein accumulation in fat body cells as well as the expression of key genes involved in these metabolic processes. Our study not only represents the first characterization of the larval fat body in this insect, but also confirms the central role of this organ in nutrient accumulation and substantiates the hypothesis of producing larvae with higher nutritional value by manipulating the diet.

Systems biology approaches to investigating the roles of extracellular vesicles in human diseases

        András Gézsi,Árpád Kovács,Tamás Visnovitz,Edit I. Buzás 생화학분자생물학회 2019 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.51 No.-

substantial attention as carriers of complex intercellular information. They have been implicated in a wide variety of biological processes in health and disease. They are also considered to hold promise for future diagnostics and therapy. EVs are characterized by a previously underappreciated heterogeneity. The heterogeneity and molecular complexity of EVs necessitates high-throughput analytical platforms for detailed analysis. Recently, mass spectrometry, nextgeneration sequencing and bioinformatics tools have enabled detailed proteomic, transcriptomic, glycomic, lipidomic, metabolomic, and genomic analyses of EVs. Here, we provide an overview of systems biology experiments performed in the field of EVs. Furthermore, we provide examples of how in silico systems biology approaches can be used to identify correlations between genes involved in EV biogenesis and human diseases. Using a knowledge fusion system, we investigated whether certain groups of proteins implicated in the biogenesis/release of EVs were associated with diseases and phenotypes. Furthermore, we investigated whether these proteins were enriched in publicly available transcriptomic datasets using gene set enrichment analysis methods. We found associations between key EV biogenesis proteins and numerous diseases, which further emphasizes the key role of EVs in human health and disease.

The effect of cooling rate in thermally sprayed alumina

André Zimmer 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2010 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.11 No.2

Particles deposited with a thermal spray process have a large cooling rate during coating formation. In this study, the effect of different cooling rates on plasma sprayed alumina was investigated. The cooling rate of particles has an important effect on alumina phase formation and crystallite size. Basically the corundum phase was observed when cooling rate is low, but with an increase in the cooling rate, nanocystallites of gamma alumina and amorphous alumina are formed.
