The dome pendant prismatic luminaire is recently used in commercial and industrial high-bay applications where quality light levels and energy savings are imperative. In addition, it is satisfied with various luminous intensity distrbutions as well as aesthetic designs. Despite these advantages, up to now, most of luminaire designers have only concentrated their attention on the design matters without optical consideration. Even if they know accurate optic a calculation process, it's difficult to produce prismatic luminaire with luminous intensity distribution required in a space, because the design process is made by much trial and error. The process is also required much time to design. μ-GA is one of the improved form of GA, which has been used to find an opimum solution, to reduce iteration and computing resources by using small populations. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to introduce candlepower distribution model of dome pendant prism luminaire and to develope a design algorithm that is able to find an optimum design solution of the luminaire using μ-GA.

The daylight responsive dimming system, which uses daylight and automatically adjusts the light output of electric lighting according to the amount of daylight coming into the indoor luminous flux, a controller (including a control program) for initial calibration and dimming control of the system, and dimming electronic ballast for dimming electric lighting. This research has intended to improve accuracy of system performance by indicating the correlation between control voltage of a dimming electronic ballast and the resulting light output. The commercially available dimming electronic ballasts were tested. Then, through regression processes, the best-fitted equations were derived and compared to experiment results. The ratios of power consumption from different dimming level of electric lighting were measured. Based on such information, energy saving can be estimated when daylight responsive dimming system is applied.

광센서 조광제어시스템에서의 광센서 최적 방향성과 위치에 관한 평가 연구

The purpose of this simulation study was to improve the performance of daylight responsive dimming systems. This simulation study was to analyze the followings. ⅰ) correlation between workplane illuminance and photosensor signal ⅱ) comparison between closed loop proportional and open loop proportional control algorithms in the daylight responssive dimming system. This study used DayDim as a simulation software and four different spatial characteristics of photosensors. Each photosensor has different spatial distributions in the existing photosensor, 0 degree, 30 degree, and 60 degree from nadir. Parameters such as sky condition, seasonal changes, azimuth, photosensor location, and different spatial distribution were considered. The results showed proper photosensor position and spatial distrubution determined by the various parameters.
RADIANCE 프로그램과 인터넷 환경을 이용한 조명시뮬레이션 시스템 개발

The prediction of illuminances from daylight and artificial lighting has been an important issue in the field of architecture. Architects traditionally have used scale models or various computer programs as tools for predicting the available illuminance in a building and for visualizing the overall lighting quality of the environment. The program requires accurate modeling of the geometric and photometric properties of a designed environment. RADIANCE is a program developed to aid lighting designers and architects by predicting the lighting levels and appearance of a space prior to construction of a building. The modeling of geometric property is usually conducted by commercially available CAD softwares. The modeling of photometric properties includes material color, texture and/or transmittance, daylight availability, and luminous intensity distribution of artificial light sources. The simulation itself uses backward ray-tracing technique to compute radiance values, which are typically arranged to form a photographic quality image. The purpose of this study is to develop a Radiance rendering system that operates automatically on the WWW environment.

As interests on illumination recently arise all over the world in the point of urban environmental view, people widely use illumination for urban environment as environmental art and making economical profits. In domestic, illumination widely takes part in improving the quality of night urban environment and attracting tourists. However, not like above intentions, since urban plan does not include urban illumination plan as a part and promotes it separately, we had to take the burden of economical loss and environmental quality deterioration. Consequently, this study analyzes space syntax and space using pattern objectively, and applied the Space Syntax Theory, which is used worldly for checking problems in planning, designing of existing cities, and buildings, in order to study the relationship with space characteristic factor and special factors in illumination plan, and then design illumination intensity estimation model through space syntax characteristic factors. Based on above results, this study suggests the methodology of illumination intensity plan using Space Syntax Theory for changes in space syntax or illumination plan for new cities in the future.
탄력 밴드를 이용한 첫 번째 발허리발가락관절의 폄과 발목 발등굽힘의 증가가 발목관절 안정성에 미치는 효과

Background It is known that ankle stability is required to maintain balance. However, metatarsophalangeal joint movement is related to ankle stability, there is no study that increases the first metatarsophalangeal joint extension and ankle dorsiflexion affect together in ankle stability. Objectives The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of an elastic band on ankle stability during one leg standing on an unstable surface. Methods A total of 12 healthy adult volunteers were recruited for this study. The total distance of the marker which presents the center of mass displacement was measured using the camera - Kinovea®. The difference between with and without an elastic band was analyzed using the paired t-test with p < 0.05 as the significant level. Results The total distance of the center of mass was significantly decreased (p < 0.001) when one leg standing on an unstable surface with an elastic band versus without an elastic band. Conclusions The present findings demonstrate that using an elastic band on the first metatarsophalangeal joint and the ankle improves ankle stability during one leg standing on an unstable surface in healthy adults.
Case Studies of Assessment of the Indoor Environment Quality for Building Remodeling in Korea

Consideration of the indoor environment quality conditions and the related physical degradation of the building environment systems is essential in the assessment of a remodeling plan for a building. Based on the results of indoor environment quality assessments, the predicted potential of remodeling actions and the effectiveness of the remodeling interventions can be evaluated. This paper describes the process of assessing the indoor environment quality in commercial buildings. Specifically, the indoor environment quality of the two office buildings and one hospitality facility (hotel) are evaluated as one of the phases in the remodeling process. Thermal comfort and air quality conditions as well as luminous environment conditions are measured, and proposed lighting design options through computer simulation are compared.
Shift of voltage reversal in stacked microbial fuel cells

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We proved that sluggish kinetics on the cathode and the imbalance of cathode kinetics cause voltage reversal in a stacked microbial fuel cell (MFC) equipped with a non-Pt cathode. Catholyte aeration to a unit MFC against passive air diffusion to the cathode in the other unit MFC shifted voltage reversal between the two units, due to improved mass transport and O<SUB>2</SUB> concentration effects in the aerated MFC. The shifted voltage reversal returned to an original status when catholyte aeration was stopped. A Pt-coated cathode increased the rate of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by a factor of ∼20, as compared to the non-Pt cathode. As a result, the anodic reaction rate that became slower than the rate on the Pt-cathode limited current density to overpotential in the stacked MFC equipped with the Pt-cathode. This work shows that dominant kinetic bottlenecks, which are the primary cause of voltage reversal, can be shifted between individual MFCs of stacked MFCs or electrodes depending on relative kinetics.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Voltage reversal occurred in the stacked MFC 1 having sluggish cathode reaction rate. </LI> <LI> No voltage reversal was observed in the stacked MFC 2 having faster kinetics on the cathode. </LI> <LI> Change in reaction rates on the cathode shifted voltage reversal between two stacked units. </LI> <LI> Voltage reversal can be shifted from the anode to the cathode in stacked MFCs. </LI> </UL> </P>

<▼1><P>The crystal structure of <I>Eco</I>MinC<SUB>NTD</SUB> dimerized <I>via</I> domain swapping was solved at 2.3 Å resolution. The present study suggests that <I>Eco</I>MinC dimerizes through both <I>Eco</I>MinC<SUB>NTD</SUB> and <I>Eco</I>MinC<SUB>CTD</SUB>.</P></▼1><▼2><P>Proper cell division at the mid-site of gram-negative bacteria reflects critical regulation by the <I>min</I> system (MinC, MinD and MinE) of the cytokinetic Z ring, which is a polymer composed of FtsZ subunits. MinC and MinD act together to inhibit aberrantly positioned Z-ring formation. MinC consists of two domains: an N-terminal domain (MinC<SUB>NTD</SUB>), which interacts with FtsZ and inhibits FtsZ polymerization, and a C-terminal domain (MinC<SUB>CTD</SUB>), which interacts with MinD and inhibits the bundling of FtsZ filaments. These two domains reportedly function together, and both are essential for normal cell division. The full-length dimeric structure of MinC from <I>Thermotoga maritima</I> has been reported, and shows that MinC dimerization occurs <I>via</I> MinC<SUB>CTD</SUB>; MinC<SUB>NTD</SUB> is not involved in dimerization. Here the crystal structure of <I>Escherichia coli</I> MinC<SUB>NTD</SUB> (<I>Eco</I>MinC<SUB>NTD</SUB>) is reported. <I>Eco</I>MinC<SUB>NTD</SUB> forms a dimer <I>via</I> domain swapping between the first β strands in each subunit. It is therefore suggested that the dimerization of full-length <I>Eco</I>MinC occurs <I>via</I> both MinC<SUB>CTD</SUB> and MinC<SUB>NTD</SUB>, and that the dimerized <I>Eco</I>MinC<SUB>NTD</SUB> likely plays an important role in inhibiting aberrant Z-ring localization.</P></▼2>
