Introduction of Tagore's literature to Korea started some time around 1916 and became quite vigorous in the 1920's. According to a Korean scholar, translation of Tagore's poems into Korean in the 1920's far exceeded any other foreign poet. Compared to 17 poems of Yeats, 11 of Whitman, 22 of Baudelaire, 33 of Turgenev and 23 of Henie, translation of Tagore's poems in the same period stood at a staggering 108. Pioneering work in this field has been done b?· Chin Hak Moon, Oh Chung suk, Han Yong Woon, Kim O'k, Yang Joo Dong, Paek Ki Man, Park Hi Jin, Kim Yang Sik, Yoo Yong etc. and enthusiasn about Tagore's literature has continued even to this day. Tagore became well known for his poetry selection 'Gitanjali' and in Korea a lot of scholars translated the English version of it. It may be mentioned here that Tagore's English translations, even though translated by himself, show a great variance from the one he wrote in his mother tongue 'Benfali'. Most of his Bengali poems were songs, and thus, unique in melodic and rythmic beauty'. He himself regreted that one could not 'find Truth' in his poems in translation. Many of his English works like 'Cresent Moon' did not even appear under the same tittle in Bengidi. There is a lot of difference even in the scheme of writing. His English works, at times, appear vary much as new works, quite unrelated to the original. This work has tried to highlight that aspect of the problem of translation. Another problem lies in conveying specific ideas of Tagore through his translation into Korean. Since Tagore has introduced to Korea through the translation of his Enlgish works, Korean scholars, like the westeners, missed some of the delicate ideas and thoughts of Tagore and even limitated themselves in calling Tagore a 'mystic poet'. It may be mentioned here that unlike the west, Korea had a much longer histoty of mingling with Indian thoughts and concepts. especially through Buddhism ; and the ideas of 'Upanishad', concepts of 'Brahnla' ,'Cosmic unity' in creation and destrcrion' were not unknown to the Koreans. Since Tagore's thought is based on such concepts he could not be a mystery in the eyes of the Koreans. This work tries to bring to light discrepancies in conveying some of the basic thoughts of Tagore due to over indulgence in liternal translation of his works from English. 'Geetanjali' as 'offering of songs' to the 'Almighty' conveys Tagore's views on god, religion, life, death etc, Due to limitations in the scope of this paper, however, I have considered only a few selected poems from 'Geetanjali', depicting Tagores thoughts on 'god' and 'life' and which are also translated by large number of Korean scholars, with a view to study the limitations in Korean translation of his works.

영어로 창작 된 인도 문학의 세계 알록 로이 인도 문화권 (Indian subcontinent)에서는 문학 작품을 모국어가 아 닌 다른 언어로 출판하는 오랜 전통이 있다. 산스크릿어(Sanskrit), 페 르시아어(Persian), 아랍어(Arabic) 다음으로 영어가 인도 지식인들 사 이에서 가지 각색의 문학 작품을 나타내는 새로운 미디어가 되었다. 호주, 캐나다, 웨스트인디스(West Indese)와 달리 영어는 인도의 언어가 아니 지만, 인도 지식인들에게 접근하기 어려운 언어는 아니다. 인도 문화권에 서 영어로 나오는 독창적인 문학작품의 수가 매년 증가함에 따라, Indo-English Literature(인도-영어문학)나Indo-Anglican literature (인도-영국 문학)로 새롭게 분류되기 시작되면서 미국이나 영국의 많은 대학들이 언어학과 문학의 한 분야로 가르치고 있다. 최근에 미국 국회 도 서관에서 “English Literature - India”(영국 문학을 인도어로) 라는 분 야를 “Indian Literature - English"(인도문학- 영어로)로 새롭게 구 분하였다. 이런 작품들은 서양 문학 사상을 도입하고 소개 할 뿐만 아니라 인도 문화사상과 전통을 다양한 관점에서 다루고 있다. 이렇게 인도 작가 들은 서양의 도전에 직면하면서 본래의 사상과 본질의 틀을 올바르게 규 정짓고 있다. 영어로 쓰여진 작품들은 나름대로 스타일이 있다. 인도적인 감성을 표현하는 데 있어 감정, 주제, 태도를 외국어(영어)로 표현하는 데 는 나름대로의 지식 기반을 창조한다. 현대 사회에서 의사소통의 어려움 이나 과거 여행할 때의 장벽들은 점차 사라지고 있다. 외국어(영어)를 사 용함으로써 한 사회의 전통과 문화는 쉽게 전세계에 알려지게 되며, 많은 사람들의 문화 인식에도 큰 변화를 가져 온다. 오늘날 사람들의 문학적 감 각은 한 언어사회와 전통의 좁은 테두리 안에서 구속되길 원하지 않는다. 오히려 영어의 선택은 모국어로 나오는 문학의 성장에 장애가 되기보다 도움이 되고 있다. 과거의 외국어 사용에 대한 두려움이 인도 문학 발전에 있어 다른 언어적인 문화 환경을 조성하는 데 큰 역할을 하고 있다. 이런 관점에서 볼 때 인도 작가들의 문학적 표현으로 영어를 선택하는 것이 다 중언어를 사용하는 현대 사회 환경에 걸맞게 이루어지고 있다고 볼 수 있다.

Trends and Practices in Language Use in Urban India

본 논문에서는 다언어사회를 맞이하고 있는 인도의 도시지역에서의 언어환경과 그 사 용, 또 언어의 역할은 어떠하였으며, 그러한 언어 환경 속에서의 언어교육정책과 언어사용의 경향과 추세, 그 전망을 알아보고자 했던 것이 이 연구의 목적이다. 본고에서는 첫째로 현재 도시로의 이주 비율이 상당히 높게 나타나고 있는 것은 인도인들이 도시 지역으로 대량 고용 등으로 인하여 유입되어 옴에 따라 그들의 도시에서의 언어에 대한 적응과 언어사용에의 변화에 대한 것을 언급하였다. 이는 급속한 도시화 속에서의 인도인들은 새로운 언어적응의 필요성인 선천적인 언어능력을 가지고 있음은 물론이지만, 이러한 적응을 단지 언어가 도구, 수단으로서가 아닌 삶을 영위하는 조건으로서의 언어임을 명확히 제시해주는 것이다. 이는 말하자면, 인도인들이 새로운 지역에서의 언어적응은 언어환경 변화에 대한 그들의 사고변화가 시대에 따라 적응되고 변화되어가고 있는가를 알려주는 것이다. 또한 이는 언어는 배우는 것이 아닌 필요에 따라서 습득하게 된다는 사고변화를 의미하게 되는 것이다. 둘째로, 도시의 언어 교육문제에 대한 대안제시를 하였다. 이제 이러한 국가의 언어정책은 더 이상 정부가 아닌 정부만을 바라보고, 그것이 어떻게 될 것인가를 바라볼 것이 아니라 스스로 만들어야 한다. 이는 더 이상 언어 교육 내지는 언어능력 배양을 위해서는 언어는 자기 스스로의 인생의 한 부분으로서 언어에 대한 대처를 해야 하는 한다는 것으로 특히 언어능력과 새로운 메시지 전달하는 역할로서의 언어교육과 그 정책이 실행되어야 할 것이다. 셋째로, 인도의 도시 문화 속에서 영어의 사용확대가 더욱 더 많이 사용되어지는 실제를 살펴보았다. 그러나 도시 지역에서 오로지 영어의 사용만 늘어난 것도 아니고 그 독보적인 위치를 가지는 것도 아니며, 대중 매체를 통한 위치와 다른 주요 인도 언어들도 이 시대의 문화적인 언어현상으로 주목받고 있다. 특히 table3에 나타난 바와 같이 변화된 환경 속에서 주요 인도 언어 역시 양적으로 증가하고 있다. 이는 변화된 인도의 도시 환경 속에서 인도의 토착 언어도 역시 성장하고 있다는 인도적 특성의 한 부분이다. 이것으로 도시 인도인들은 언어 사회 속에서 이제는 하나의 언어로 말하는 사람에게 다양한 능력과 정도에 따라서 언어로의 사용으로 옮겨가고 있음을 알수 있다. 이는 민족적인 특성이다. 언어학적인 정체성을 말살하는 것이 아닌 도시환경 변화속에서 그들이 삶을 영위하기 위한 그들만의 선택으로서가 아닌 세계의 통합을 향한 피할 수 없는 경향과 추세의 한 부분으로서 어느 곳 어디서든지 서로가 직접 의사전달의 수단으로서의 언어사용에의 적극적인 자세로 이해되어져야 할 것이다. 또한 도시 인도에서 언어 습득을 하는 과정에서 인도인들이 도시로 이주하는 현상은 근간의 일이지만, 그들의 언어 접근을 위한 자세는 개방되어 있었음을 언급할 수 있겠으며, 역사적인 사실 속에서 볼 때 인도 엘리트들은 모국어가 아닌 새로운 언어 사용에 대해서는 거부반응이 전혀 없었다는 것을 강조하고 싶다.

Optimal vibration energy harvesting from nonprismatic piezolaminated beam

The present article encompasses a nonlinear finite element (FE) and genetic algorithm (GA) based optimal vibration energy harvesting from nonprismatic piezo-laminated cantilever beams. Three cases of cross section profiles (such as linear, parabolic and cubic) are modelled to analyse the geometric nonlinear effects on the output responses such as displacement, voltage, and power. The simultaneous effects of taper ratios (such as breadth and height taper) on the output power are also studied. The FE based nonlinear dynamic equation of motion has been solved by an implicit integration method (i.e., Newmark method in conjunction with the Newton-Raphson method). Besides this, a real coded GA based constrained optimization scheme has also been proposed to determine the best set of design variables for optimal harvesting of power within the safe limits of beam stress and PZT breakdown voltage.

In this paper, first order slice height calculation in Laminated Object Manufacturing (LOM) of free form surfaces is done with two different considerations: that a) the cutter trajectory is oriented in the direction of local absolute maximum more in number when compared to the case where the cutter trajectory is contained in the normal vertical section (NVS). However, it would help in achieving higher form accuracy of the final part because it would be a form of worst-case check. For the second proposed strategy, least number of slices results, thereby reducing overall build time drastically.
