Sexing the Nation: A Reading of Three Mexican Novels
Vol.21 No.3
The essay is a reading of Carlos Fuentes’ three novels using primarily the theorizing of Doris Sommer on Latin American fiction. The approach is to render a deconstructive analysis in the light of nationalist conception of sexuality, and to expose the very sexual allegories in forging a concept of the nation. While attempting to explore the ways patriarchal meanings are carefully embedded in the text through narrative strategies and literary techniques, the essay also brings to fore the paradoxes of using female protagonists in order to subvert accusations of masculine literary presence. It is also questioned in the text how and why prized “nationalist” novels such as Fuentes’ heavily invest on sexual couplings and metaphorical meanings ascribed to specifically heterosexual relationships. In conclusion, while these novels do not categorically belong to Latin America’s “foundational” literature because of their obvious self–conscious modernism, they are neither deconstructive in terms of nationalist formulations on sex and love.
From the personal to the political: : Young, Filipino, and feminist
2021 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.27 No.1
The new generation of Filipino feminists, like all young people, not only have characteristics and experiences that are different from those of the older generation, they are also subject to a culture of seniority. As young women who are conscientized about and act against social injustice, they acquire further distinctiveness. Drawing upon semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with 29 research participants, I inquire into the critical consciousness and engagements of young Filipino women with feminism. A central finding was their profound and thorough internalization of feminist ideas—not only as praxis, but also as a set of principles and values—which may be viewed to represent young feminist identity within processes of feminist maturation. This study recognizes that broadening and deepening our understanding of young feminists is vital for building and strengthening organizations and the movement and nurturing a veritable inter-generational feminist solidarity.

In rice cultivation, crop yield and productivity rely on the efficient supply of nitrogen. Mismanagement of nitrogen, such as insufficient and oversupply, lowers the plant vigor and stability. Using next-generation sequencing, transcriptome mining can discover nitrogen-responsive genes, regulators, and markers that can be used to improve the nitrogen use efficiency in rice plants. Here, we present an extension of the RNA Sequencing pipeline to generate a list of candidate genes that have the potential for molecular-based sensor development in Oryza sativa for nitrogen monitoring. The RNA Sequencing data used in this study represents 4714 genes from O. sativa seedlings that showed a dynamic response toward nitrogen availability. To generate a pool of candidate genes, we designed an algorithm for a two-step screening process that evaluates the expression of each gene across different sampling points using fuzzy logic. On the first screening, the genes were clustered based on their expression pattern, wherein a total of 135 genes from leaf tissues were found to exhibit an antagonistic response to nitrogen starvation and adaptation. These were further evaluated for the second screening where 27 genes showed at least 72% change in expression. Most of the genes were found associated with the plant’s response to stress, biotic and abiotic stimulus, transport, protein modification, and metabolic processes. This set of genes will serve as the target transcripts for nitrogen sensor development.
