        Cognitive decline is perceived to be a characteristic of the aging process, and is profoundly manifested in age-related neurodegenerative disorders such as Aizheimer's Disease(AD). The pathologic mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration are complex and not completely understood, but a contributing factor is believed to be oxidative stress. The brain has a high metabolic requirement for oxygen and a high concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids, and therefore is prone to lipid peroxidation. Lipid peroxidation leads to the production of free radicals that may attack and irreversibly damage neural tissue, thus contributing directly or synergistically to neurodegenerative process. Accumulating evidence from preclinical and clinical studies supports the hypothesis that oxidative stress may be associated with the onset and progression of AD. Antioxident therapies are being promoted in the lay press to enhance mental functions and delay cognitive losses with aging. This paper summarizes the oxidative stress hypothesis of AD and reviews the strengths and limitations of published antioxidant studies in AD in relation to the role of such therapies in practice.

      • 파절된 도재전장관의 표면처리 방법에 따른 수복 레진의 접합강도에 관한 연구

        The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of surface treatment of fractured metal-ceramic crown on bond strength of porcelain repair resin. The specimens were divided into two groups for metal specimens and five groups for porcelain specimens by surface treatment methods. The metal specimens were treated by 2 methods. : micro-sandblasting with 50㎛ aluminum oxide and grinding with diamond bur. The porcelain specimens were treated by 5 methods. : micro-sandblasting with 50㎛ aluminum oxide, grinding with diamond bur, etching with porcelain etching agent, combination of micro-sandblasting and etching procedure, and combination of grinding and etching procedure. After surface treatment, each specimen was bonded with composite resin and the bond strength was measured and the surface texture was observed by scanning electromicroscope(SEM). The results were as follows : 1. There was significant difference in shear bond strength between metal specimen and porcelain specimen. 2. Bond strength of metal specimens treated with coe diamond bur was higher than that treated with 50㎛ alumium oxide sandblasting. 3. Bond strength of porcelain specimen treated with diamond bur was higher than that treated with 50㎛ aluminum oxide sandblasting and porcelain etching agent. 4. There was no significant difference in shear bond strength between the group treated with diamond bur and combined treatment groups respectively. 5. The large undercuts were observed in group treated with diamond bur by SEM.

      • 경피흡수 약물송달 시스템에 적용되는 의료용 점착제의 평가

        TDD systems must provide good, reliable skin contact for a specified period of time in order to provide consistent drug delivery, then should be easy to remove when desired, without causing trauma to the skin. To meet these goals, proper evaluation of the adhesives is important. Prior to the development of polyurethane adhesives, the adhesive property of seven commercially available TDD systems have been quantitatively compared by performing the Probe tack test and Peel adhesion test. The tack strength of adhesives have been measured by the Probe test method. Effect of dwell time (0.1, 0.4, 1 and 50 sec) on tack strength was measured. The tested adhesives showed progressive increase in tack strength as dwell time increased. Each adhesive system showed a different tack temperature relationship. Among seven, three PSA showed no decrease in tack in 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd tack test which simulate the reapplication of TDD system for repositioning of the device. For twice a day patches, tack strength range 0.34-0.39 kgf and once a day patches show 0.53-0.79 kgf and 72-96 hr application patches range 0.8 kgf (dwell time Isec at 25℃, 1 st tack strength). Also the 180˚degree peel adhesion test has been performed according to PSTC test no.1. From the peel adhesion test, the forces required to detach the adhesives from the stainless steel have been evaluated. For once a day patches, the average peel strength ranges 0.9-1.4 (kgf/25㎜) and for twice a day patches, they ranges 0.2-0.35 (kgf/25㎜) when peel-off speed was 100 ㎜/min. In conclusion, required tack and peel adhesion property to maintain proper adhesives for twice a day, once a day and 72-96 hr application patches have been evaluated.

        Background and Objectives: The aim of the study was to identify the factors associated with life satisfaction of hospitalized Vietnam veterans. Material and Methods: The data were collected from 200 hospitalized Vietnam veterans of 5 veterans hospitals in Korea from September 13 to 23, 2004. Information of general characteristics, health behavior, disease history, family function, depression and life satisfaction were collected by structured questionnaire. Results: The mean of life satisfaction was 21.48(±6.03), and the mean of depression was 53.10(±9.64). The prevalence of depression was mild depression 24.0%, moderate depression 43.5% and severe depression 25.0%. Depression was associated with life satisfaction and depression was higher, life satisfaction was lower. Family function and age were positively associated with life satisfaction, Conclusion: Life satisfaction was affected by depression and family function in hospitalized Vietnam veterans. Therefore, it was thought that psychosocial approaches such as improve depression and family function in care of hospitalized Vietnam veterans is required.

      • 혈장 중 Cefprozil의 이성체인 cis-Cefprozil과 trans-Cefprozil의 동시분석법

        Cefprozil is a broad-spectrum oral beta-lactam cephalosporin consisting of cis-- and trans-isomers in and approximately 90:10 ratio. To establish an assay condition for a Bioequvalence study of cefprozil, a column liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method using UV detection for the determination of the cis- and trans-isomers of cefprozil in blood has been developed. The HPLC apparatus used in this study was Waters 2695 Separation Module (Alliance) system. Samples were analyzed with dual absorbance detector (280㎚). C8 (150×4.6㎜, Luna 5㎛, Phenomenex) column with column inlet filter (3㎜×O.5㎛), provided a good resolution, The mobile phase was composed of acetonitrile : glacial acetic acid : water: (5:2:93 as v/v/v, pH 2.7). The flow rate was 1.0㎖/min. Typical retention times with Luna column were 10.8, 14.8 and 20.5min for cis-cefprozil, trans-cefprozil and cepharolidine (internal standard), respectively. For the data manipulation, Waters Millennium program was employed. Calibration curves for the determination of cis-cefprozil and trans isomers of cefprozil in plasma showed a good linearity at a concentration range from 0.05 to 15㎍/㎖ (r²=0.999) and 0.01-1.5㎍/㎖ (r²=0.998). The lower detection limits for cis- and trans-cefprozil were 0.05 and 0.01㎍/㎖, respectively.

        설파디아진은의 피부세포 증식 및 화상모델에 있어서의 상처치유과정에 미치는 영향

        Cyto-toxic effect of silver sulfadiazine (Ag-SD) on keratinocytes and its implication on wound healing process were investigated in 2^nd degree burn hairless mouse model. As a dermal model, HaCat (immortalized keratinocytes) monolayer culture in DMEM with 10% FBS was used. Cyto-toxicity of Ag-SD was estimated by measuring the cell viability using neutral red assay after adding the drug. The 2^nd degree burn was prepared on hairless mouse back skin (1 cm diameter) and dressings with Ag-SD were applied for 96 hr. The process of re-epithelialization and the presence of inflammatory cells were investigated and histology with Hematoxylin-Eosin staining was performed. Ag-SD displayed highly cyto-toxic effect on cultured HaCat cells in a concentration dependent manner (1-100 ㎍/mL). Topical application of Ag-SD (2%) could control the infection: no inflammatory cells were observed in histology. However the cyto-toxic effect of Ag-SD on skin cells induced the impairment in epidermal regeneration.

        오디 추출액 첨가비율에 따른 오디편의 품질특성에 관한 연구

        Oddi is a mulberry (Morus alba L) fruit which has antiinflammatory and antioxidative effects. This study was carried out to investigate the quality characteristics of Oddi-Pyun which was manufactured with various addition levels (0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4%) of Oddi extract according to the traditional Korean Kwaypun (a kind of jelly) methodology. Oddi-Pyun was made with various levels of Oddi extract, mungbean starch (9%) and sugar (30%). To establish the additional amount of mulberry fruit extract, sensory evaluation and physical test were carried out. From the results of sensory evaluation, the 2% of Oddi-Pyun was judged as the best in terms of color, flavor, hardness and elasticity. According to texture characteristics (hardness, adhesiveness, springiness, gumminess and chewiness), 1.0% and 2.0% of Oddi-Pyun were judged as the best. The contents of Ca (69.50, 74.75, 84.25, 100.60, 183.55ppm), Mg(27.37, 29.38, 34.20, 46.73, 97.45ppm) and Fe (320.23, 572.45, 680.50, 725.95, 906.50ppb) increased with increasing Oddi extract. Therefore, the optimal added amount of extract for the manufacture of Oddi-Pyun was proposed as 2% to the total weight. It was concluded that this Oddi-Pyun would be helpful to improve the health status of rheumatics and patients with similar diseases.

      • MCT 대체 마요네즈의 물성적 특성 및 기호도에 관한 연구

        The study was carried on the rheological properties and sensory evaluations of mayonnaise substitued by MCT. Nowdays we are consideration of the fat replacer and fat substitutes. It was known that fat and oils had become causes for cardiac disease, obesity and cancer, so the new materials were needed for fat replacer. MCT(medium chain triglyceride) is one of the fat bsed substitutes used as fat replacer. In case of making of mayonnaise substituted by MCT, springiness of mayonnaise prepared with SO substituted by over 20% MCT increased highly, cohesiveness of mayonnaise made of 10-20% MCT substitution was similar to that made without MCT. And hardness, gumminess, and chewiness of mayonnaise prepared with 10-30% MCT substitution were similar or increased more or less to that made with SO only. In the result of color measurement by colorimeter brightness of that made with SO substituted by 10-30% MCT was similar to that made with SO only, redness was almost same without differences significantly in all samples with or without MCT, but yellowness was decreased highly over 10% MCT substitution. By the results of sensory evaluations, appearance, color, and flavor of cakes prepared with CO substituted by MCT until 100% were shown to be better, and taste was better in range of 30% MCT substitution, but texture had lower acceptability than those of cake made without MCT. While in case of mayonnaise, appearance, color, flavor, texture, and taste were obtained worse score, overall acceptance was similar in the range of 10% MCT substitution but was decreased highly upon MCT substitution ratios increase over 20% substitution than that made with SO only. Respecting that the necessity of fat substitute become real situation in dietary in the future, it will be suggested that many foods containing fats and oils will substitute by MCT and another fat replacer.
