Purpose: We evaluated and compared the efficacy of tamsulosin and alfuzosin in the medical treatment of symptomatic, uncomplicated distal ureteral stones. Materials and Methods: A total of 87 patients with distal ureteral stones of ≤10 mm were randomly divided into 3 groups. Group I patients (n=29) received 0.4 mg tamsulosin daily, group II patients (n=30) received 10 mg alfuzosin daily, and group III patients (n=28) were not given tamsulosin or alfuzosin. Patients in all groups received Diclofenac sodium regularly for 1 week and then on demand. Follow-up was done on a weekly basis for 30 days. Results: The mean stone size was comparable in the 3 groups (4.97±2.24, 5.47±2.13, and 5.39±1.81 mm, respectively). The stone expulsion rate was 86.2%, 76.6%, and 50% in groups I, II, and III, respectively. The difference in groups I and II with respect to group III was significant (p=0.0028 and 0.035). The mean expulsion time for groups I to III was 7.52±7.06, 8.26±7.34, and 13.90±6.99 days, respectively. The expulsion time was significantly shorter in groups I and II than in group III (p=0.0097 and 0.026). Patients taking tamsulosin and alfuzosin had fewer pain attacks than did group III patients (1.24±0.57 vs. 1.43±0.67 vs. 1.75±1.17). Only 3 cases of drug side effects, 2 in group I and 1 in group II, were recorded. Conclusions: The use of tamsulosin or alfuzosin for the medical treatment of lower ureteric stones proved to be safe and effective. Moreover, tamsulosin did not have any significant benefits over alfuzosin. Antioxidant properties of Korean major persimmon (Diospyros kaki) leaves

Persimmon is one of the most common native fruits of South Korea and its leaves are well known to be used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics as well as beverages. The aim of this study was to compare the antioxidant properties of Korean major persimmon leaves on the basis of drying methods (hot air drying and freeze-drying) and harvesting time. Persimmon leaves from five cultivars (‘Sangju-dungsi’, ‘Sangam-dungsi’, ‘Cheongdobansi’, ‘Gabjubaekmok’ and ‘Suhong’) were harvested in late May and late June followed by blanching and drying. Results depicted that, persimmon leaves harvested in late May had the highest amount of antioxidants content compared to the late June. No significant difference was found between HAD and FD treatment with respect to total phenol, total flavonoid, tannin content, ABTS and DPPH radical-scavenging activity. Finally, it can be concluded that ‘Gabjubaekmok’ persimmon leaves collected during late May and dried by hot air are richer in antioxidants.

The Sec61α subunit is the core subunit of the protein conducting channel which is required for protein translocation in eukaryotes and prokaryotes. In this study, we cloned a Sec61α subunit from Penicillium ochrochloron (PoSec61α). Sequence and 3D structural model analysis showed that PoSec61α conserved the typical characteristics of eukaryotic and prokaryotic Sec61α subunit homologues. The pore ring known as the constriction point of the channel is formed by seven hydrophobic amino acids. Two methionine residues from transmembrane α-helice 7 (TM7) contribute to the pore ring formation and projected notably to the pore area and narrowed the pore compared with the superposed residues at the corresponding positions in the crystal structures or the 3D models of the Sec61α subunit homologues in archaea or other eukaryotes, respectively. Results reported herein indicate that the pore ring residues differ among Sec61α subunit homologues and two hydrophobic residues in the TM7 contribute to the pore ring formation. Effect of input variability on the quality of laser shock processing

Laser shock processing (LSP) involves high-energy laser radiation combined with suitable overlays to generate highpressure pulses on the surface of the metal. The stress wave generated due to high pressure pulses propagates into the material causing the surface layer to yield and plastically deform, and thereby, develop a significant residual compressive stress in the surface region of the substrate material. The developed compressive stress field is beneficial to improve surface properties such as fatigue, wear, and corrosion. To improve the understanding of the shock hardening process, investigation into the physical processes involved is necessary. In the first part of this paper, the temporal variation in the pressure intensity and spot size is calculated by using a two-dimensional recoil pressure prediction model. Using an explicit non-linear FEA code, ANSYS LS-DYNA, the deformation behavior and residual stresses in the substrate material are predicted. In the second part, a probabilistic approach to the modeling and analysis of LSP is presented in this paper. Various factors that affect the probabilistic performance of the LSP are grouped into categories and a select number of factors known to be significant, for which the variability could be assessed, are modeled as random variables (such as recoil pressure, laser beam spot size, substrate material properties and others). The potential of the probabilistic approach in predicting the structural integrity of the laser-shocked components is addressed.

Purpose: We evaluated and compared the effectiveness of an enuresis alarm, desmopressin medication, and their combination in the treatment of Saudi children with primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (PMNE). Materials and Methods: A total of 136 children with PMNE were randomly assigned to receive an enuresis alarm alone (EA group, n=45), desmopressin alone (D group, n=46), or a combination of both (EA/D group, n=45). Patients were followed weekly during treatment and for 12 weeks after treatment withdrawal. Results: During treatment, wetting frequencies were significantly reduced in all groups and remained significantly lower than pretreatment values until the end of follow-up. In the D and EA/D groups, an immediate reduction in wetting frequencies was observed, whereas a longer time was required to reach a significant reduction in the EA group. The full and partial response rates were 13.3% and 37.8% in the EA group, 26.1% and 43.5% in the D group, and 40.0% and 33.3% in the EA/D group. A significant difference was observed only between the EA and EA/D groups (p=0.025). Relapse rates were higher in the D group (66.6%) than in the EA (16.6%) and EA/D (33.3%) groups. A significant difference was observed between the D and EA groups only (p=0.019). Conclusions: Desmopressin, an enuresis alarm, and combined therapy are effective in the treatment of Saudi children with PMNE. Desmopressin produced an immediate effect but relapses were common. The enuresis alarm provided gradual effects that persisted posttreatment. The combined therapy was superior to the alarm in achieving an immediate response; however, its effect was not better than that of the alarm long term.

The fruits of Phaleria macrocarpa (PM) have long been used as a traditional Malay medicinal herb for hundreds of years. To determine the toxicity of the mesocarp and pericarp of ethanol extract of PM (EEPM). In this study, 6–8 weeks of adult healthy male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats between 180 and 220 g, were used. The Group I was received 10 % normal saline and Group II, III, IV and V were treated with EEPM orally to each rat (n = 6) on daily basis at 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 mg/ kg 28 consecutive days. Animals body weight showed normal growth from 189.76 ± 2.33 and 189.86 ± 1.01 g to 227 ± 3.06 and 225 ± 2.07 g. Biochemical aspects of treated animals’ indicated serum values of (creatinine 0.46 ± 0.033, phosphorous 5 ± 0.46, HDL 31.31 ± 1.48, LDL 30.66 ± 0.37, Cholesterol 68.23 ± 1.28 and AST 63.08 ± 2.65, ALT 22.05 ± 0.68 and ALP 79.16 ± 0.82) which is similar with the control group. Histological observation showed no necrosis, abnormalities and inflammation in both control and EEPM treated groups. Findings suggests; the fruits are non-toxic when applied to SD rats. In this way, it may also serve as a good alternative in the present armamentarium of traditional medicine without showing its any side effects.
