        Bimetallic Pd@Ni-mesoporous TiO2 nanocatalyst for highly improved and selective hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds under UV light radiation

        Bimetallic Pd@Ni nanostructure exhibited enhanced co-catalytic activity for the selective hydrogenation of benzaldehyde compare to their monometallic counterparts. Impregnation of these mono/bimetallic nanostructures on mesoporous TiO2 leads to several surface modifications. The bimetallic PNT-3 (Pd3@Ni1/mTiO2) exhibited large surface area (212 m2 g−1), and low recombination rate of the charge carriers (e−-h+). The hydrogenation reaction was analyzed under controlled experiments. It was observed that under UV-light irradiations and saturated hydrogen atmosphere the bimetallic PNT-3 photocatalyst display higher rate constant k = 5.31 × 10−1 h−1 owing to reduction in the barrier height which leads to efficiently transfer of electron at bimetallic/mTiO2 interface.

        Bimetallic Cu(core)@Zn(shell) co-catalyst impregnated TiO2 nanosheets (001 faceted) for the selective hydrogenation of quinoline under visible light irradiation

        Bimetallic nanostructures have gained immense importance owing to their enhanced co-catalyticeffect in improving photocatalytic activity of TiO2 for various applications relative to monometallicones. However, the use of bimetallic core@shell catalyst/nanocatalyst for hydrogenation ofimportant industrial organic is not much explored relative to conventional metal catalysts. Inthis respect, the present study demonstrated the synthesis of core@shell (Cu@Zn) nanostructurebased on their galvanic interactions. TEM analysis confirmed the formation of Cu@Zn nanoparticleswith a shell thickness of 195 nm. It was observed that with increasing Cu:Zn weight ratio (1:1, 2:1,and 3:1) the average hydrodynamic size increases from 198 to 267 nm. These Cu@Zn nanostructuresshowed superior co-catalytic activity after impregnation on (001) faceted titanium nanosheets(surface area = 72.8 m2 g 1) for the selective hydrogenation of quinoline under visible lightradiations. The optimized Cu@Zn(3:1)/TiO2 photocatalyst showed enhanced conversion, selectivity,and higher rate constant (k = 2.1 10 1 h 1) compared to Cu and Zn-TiO2 nanocomposites. Thesuperior activity of Cu@Zn-TiO2 photocatalyst was attributed to the synergistic interaction occurringat bimetallic-TiO2 interface which effectively promotes the transfer of electron and hydride (H ) forquinoline hydrogenation. The conventional hydrogenation of quinoline required high temperature,solvents, expensive bases and involved multistep procedure. Therefore, the use of Cu@Zn-TiO2photocatalyst might be a greener approach for the selective hydrogenation of industrial importantunsaturated organic compounds under light radiations.

        Intelligent Clustering in Vehicular ad hoc Networks

        A network with high mobility nodes or vehicles is vehicular ad hoc Network (VANET). For improvement in communication efficiency of VANET, many techniques have been proposed; one of these techniques is vehicular node clustering. Cluster nodes (CNs) and Cluster Heads (CHs) are elected or selected in the process of clustering. The longer the lifetime of clusters and the lesser the number of CHs attributes to efficient networking in VANETs. In this paper, a novel Clustering algorithm is proposed based on Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) for VANET named ACONET. This algorithm forms optimized clusters to offer robust communication for VANETs. For optimized clustering, parameters of transmission range, direction, speed of the nodes and load balance factor (LBF) are considered. The ACONET is compared empirically with state of the art methods, including Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) and Comprehensive Learning Particle Swarm Optimization (CLPSO) based clustering techniques. An extensive set of experiments is performed by varying the grid size of the network, the transmission range of nodes, and total number of nodes in network to evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithms in comparison. The results indicate that the ACONET has significantly outperformed the competitors.

      • Effects of Arsenic Trioxide Alone and in Combination with Bortezomib in Multiple Myeloma RPMI 8266 Cells

        The aim of this study was to detect the efficiency of arsenic trioxide (ATO) alone or together with bortezomib to inhibit proliferation and induce apoptosis in a multiple myeloma (MM) RPMI 8266 cells. Mechanisms of action were also investigated. RPMI 8266 cells were treated with ATO alone and in combination with bortezomib for 24 hours, and cell viability was assessed by modified MTT. Annexin V-F1TC and PI staining was used to detect the apoptosis rate and cell cycling was investigated by flow cytometry, along with expression of cell surface death receptor-4(DR4) and death receptor-5 (DR5). Western blotting was applied to detect the expression of bcl-2, caspase-3, caspase-8, and caspase-9. As a result, the ATO combined with bortezomib group showed more inhibition of RPMI 8266 cell viability than theATO group. Expression of DR4 and DR5 on the cell surfaces, and the apoptosis rate were increased after treatment by ATO alone or combined with bortezomib. The cells appeared to arrest in G2/M phase after treatment. Expression of bcl-2 was more significantly decreased in the combination group, and that of caspase-3, caspase-8 and caspase-9 was significantly increased as well. Therefore, bortezomib can enhance ATO actions to induce apoptosis in RPMI 8266 cells, with decrease in expression of bcl-2 and increase of caspase-3, caspase-8 and caspase-9 proteins.

        The challenges and coping strategies of single mothers caring for children with special needs: Experiences from Kashmir, India

        Families play a significant role in the development of their children. Nearly 16% of children in the industrialized world live in single-parent households, which are mostly comprised of single mothers. Although motherhood is the most beautiful feeling a woman cherishes, this experience can be challenging when the woman has to raise their special-needs child on her own, without the support of her spouse or partner. This study aims to understand the challenges and coping strategies of single mothers while raising their special-needs children. To this end, in-depth case interviews were conducted with three single mothers selected purposively from the Srinagar area in Kashmir, India. The results revealed that multiple roles and responsibilities had an adverse effect on the psychological well-being of single mothers who had to deal with the financial burden of caring for their child's condition, including expenses for doctor visits, special therapies and medication, among other. In addition, they had to expe-rience the social pressure and stigmatization attached to being a single mother. The most widely employed coping strategies include support from family and friends, reli-gious faith, and self-coping. The study recommends the creation of welfare packages like free counseling, stipend support, inclusive education, free medical treatment, and therapies for Children with Special Needs (CWSNs) and their mothers.

        Dynamics of domestic violence in Kashmir: An interplay of multiple factors

        Domestic violence is a widely prevalent phenomenon in the world. However, some of its features are culture‐specific. This study, therefore, attempts to study domestic violence in the context of Kashmir's culture. It draws on data collected through interviews with victims of domestic violence who were identified during a survey in Kashmir. The interview transcripts were analyzed and themes were drawn using the axial coding method (Corbin and Strauss). Classification of the themes into categories was based on similarities that they share and on the frequency with which they co‐occur. These categories gave a sense of dynamics of domestic violence operating in Kashmir. Data reveals that the causes of domestic violence in Kashmir operate at various levels, like individual, social, and cultural. Moreover, qualitative analysis of the interview transcripts visualize domestic violence in Kashmir as the interplay of the following categories, personal factors, communication factors, power factors, interpersonal factors , cultural factors, and situational factors. It is the geo‐political and social context of Kashmir that results in the unique dynamic of these causal factors which will help in designing and tailoring culture‐specific interventions to address the issue of domestic violence in Kashmir.

        Algorithm of Common Solutions to the Cayley Inclusion and Fixed Point Problems

        In this paper, we develop an iterative algorithm for obtaining common solutions to the Cayley inclusion problem and the set of fixed points of a non-expansive mapping in Hilbert spaces. A numerical example is given for the justification of our claim.

      • Implementation of VANET-based Warning Generation System using Cellular Networks, GPS, and Passive RFID Tags

        Vehicular communication systems are a key part of an intelligent transportation system, while vehicle safety communication is a major target of vehicular communication. Other features that augment vehicular ad hoc networks are enhanced driving experience, including but not limited to, active navigation and weather information, real-time traffic information and a plethora of other autonomous and automated systems. However, our focus will be warning generation systems, which can help reduce fatalities if deployed in an efficient and fail-safe manner on motorways and highways. This paper describes a collective information system for collection and delivery of traffic information aimed at supporting fast, efficient and secure travel of people and transport of goods. Based on that information, authorities are able to assess vehicles’ sudden motion and movement changes and can generate warning/alert messages (for emergency/police vehicles) for post-accident scenarios. In this paper, the use of a radio frequency identification (RFID) system for vehicular communication has been proposed and an extended RFID system and infrastructure for vehicle safety communication through emergency phone towers (EPTs) and cell phones is suggested. In order to communicate, vehicles may be equipped with a cellular phone, RFID, and/or a global positioning system (GPS), whereas RFID readers may be mounted on EPTs, which are already installed on motorways. It also provides a demonstration on flow of information within the system; the simulation results are also included.

        Enhanced piezoelectric output of NiO/nanoporous GaN by suppression of internal carrier screening

        <P>The efficiency of piezoelectric nanogenerators (PNGs) significantly depends on the free carrier concentration of semiconductors. In the presence of a mechanical stress, piezoelectric charges are generated at both ends of the PNG, which are rapidly screened by the free carriers. The screening effect rapidly decreases the piezoelectric output within fractions of a second. In this study, the piezoelectric outputs of bulk- and nanoporous GaN-based heterojunction PNGs are compared. GaN thin films were epitaxially grown on sapphire substrates using metal organic chemical vapor deposition. Nanoporous GaN was fabricated using electrochemical etching, depleted of free carriers owing to the surface Fermi-level pinning. A highly resistive NiO thin film was deposited on bulk- and nanoporous GaN using radio frequency magnetron sputter. The NiO/nanoporous GaN PNG (NPNG) under a periodic compressive stress of 4 MPa exhibited an output voltage and current of 0.32 V and 1.48 <I>μ</I>A cm<SUP>−2</SUP>, respectively. The output voltage and current of the NiO/thin film-GaN PNG (TPNG) were three and five times smaller than those of the NPNG, respectively. Therefore, the high-resistivity of NiO and nanoporous GaN depleted by the Fermi-level pinning are advantageous and provide a better piezoelectric performance of the NPNG, compared with that of the TPNG.</P>
