The brushless DC motor with trapezoidal back emfs has torque ripple due to phase commutation. The torque ripple generates noise and vibration and cause errors in position control so this makes the brushless DC motor less suitable for high performance servo applications. In this paper, we propose a new current control method to reduce the torque ripple due to commutation, when the unipolar PWM method is applied for the phase current control of brushless DC motor.<br/>

In this paper, a novel Indirect rotor position sensing method is proposed to Improve the performance of sensorless drive of brushless DC motors. Fast mode change to the sensorless operation is difficult In the existing indirect rotor position sensing methods because precise rotor position can not be obtained when an excessive Input is applied to the drive during synchronous operation mode To cope with this problem, the relationship between terminal voltage and back-emf waveform is analyzed in this paper, also a novel Indirect position sensing method which can detect a precise rotor position at low speed range is proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through the experimental results

This study deals with the development of PMSM(Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) for automotive EDC(Electric Drive Compressor). We have already developed the previous version of PMSM. It showed the characteristics of small size and high efficiency. But noise and vibration levels were higher than target values, so it was impossible to apply. So, in order to reduce noise and vibration levels, many parameters like the numbers of slots, the numbers of winding turns, and slot open width were changed. As a result, noise level of newly developed PMSM was decreased about 36.9 % at maximum operating frequency (8600 rpm), and was reduced about 37.7 % at rated frequency (6000 rpm) with the same sized and more efficient PMSM
