        Partial penetration welding joint defines that groove welds without steel backing, welded from one side, and groove welds welded from both sides but without back gouging, that is, it has an unwelded portion at the root of the weld. Study of partial penetration weldment fracture behavior includes residual stress analysis, and fracture analysis. The J-integral loses its path independency in residual stress field. Therefore, it is necessary new J-integral,?, which is considered the effect of plastic deformation and thermal strain. In this study, theoretical formulation and program were developed for the evaluation of ?-integral at the crack tip of weldment. Evaluations of fracture behavior were performed for partial penetration multi-pass weldment of 25.4mm thick plate by ?-integral. From a point of fracture in partial penetration multi-pass welding, it seemed to be better to control root face smaller than 6.35mm.

        Hybrid metal matrix composites used in machines and structures need acceptable data of fatigue life. In real application, machines and structures are subjected to random load histories rather than regular-periodic load histories. Therefore, the fatigue life estimation under irregular-periodic load is necessary for the stability evaluation of machinery. This research makes comparisons of empirical fatigue-lives between AC8A Al alloy and the metal matrix composites(Al/A1₂/O₃/Al₂O₃p) and also includes comparisons of fatigue-lives between empirical fatigue-lives and estimated fatigue-lives from<br/> regular-periodic load. .<br/> According to the test result, the fatigue life of the hybrid metal matrix composites and the metal matrix composites, which are more brittle than the base matrix was shorter than that of the bast matrix under both types of loads. In addition, the fatigue-life estimated from the damage summation method and that from experiment at random load were fairly identical that the theoretical method of fatigue life estimation could be applied to the metal matrix composites.
