여행기는 관광경험을 언어적으로 재현 함으로서 관광지에 대한 개인의 기억과 정보를 다른 사람과 공유하는 효과적인 방법이다. 또한 여행기를 통한 관광경험의 재현은 작가의 개인적 정체성 및 작가가 속한 사회의 문화적 가치를 드러내는 공간으로 이해되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 동양과 서양을 존재론적, 인식론적으로 구분하는 서구의 이분법적 사고를 개념화한 후기식민주의의 대표적인 이론인 오리엔탈리즘이 한국을 방문한 미국인의 여행기를 통해 어떻게 언어적으로 재현되고 있는지 비판적 담론분석을 통하여 분석하였다. 여행기를 통해 드러난 다양한 담론적 주제 가운데 분석결과는 첫째, 「차이에 대한 믿음」, 둘째, 「타 문화에 대한 정형화」, 셋째, 「미국 문화의 우월감」의 세가지 주제로 추출되었다. 본 연구결과는 오리엔탈리즘이 현대관광에서도 서구 관광객의 행동에 여전히 의미 있는 영향을 미치고 있지만 대상 국가나 문화에 따라 다른 형태로 나타날 수 있다는 사실을 보여준다. 또한 오리엔탈리즘은 한국이 경제적 선진국 대열로 진입하는 상황에서 한국인의 관광행동을 이해하는 데에도 상당 부분 의미를 가질 수 있다. Travel writing is an effective way to share individual memories and Information about tourist destinations by representing experiences in writing The representation of travel experiences through travel writing has been understood to reflect the writer`s socio-cultural values. This study aims to use Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to investigate specifically how Orientalism is represented in American travel writing about Korea. Orientalism is a feature of post-colonialism, representing Western binary thinking in which the East and the West are ontologically and epistemologically divided. Through this analysis, three main themes were revealed: the myth of being "different," a "stereotyping of other culture" and, finally, a reflections of "American pride." The results imply that Orientalism should be evaluated according to context and that it still plays a critical role in tourist behavior today. Also, this study shows that Orientalism could provide a useful means for understanding Korean tourist behavior, which has become a significant phenomenon of contemporary society.

도시는 다양한 계층의 사람들에 의해 정치, 경제, 교육, 문화 등 수많은 기능이 수행되는 공간으로서 현대사회를 이해함에 있어서 매우 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 도시라는 공간적 배경으로 이루어지고 있는 관광현상의 경제적, 문화적 중요성 때문에 관광학 분야에서도 도시관광개발, 도시이미지, 도시마케팅, 문화도시 등 도시관광과 관련된 연구주제에 많은 국내외 학자들의 관심이 쏟아지고 있다. 그러나 도시관광에 대한 늘어나는 정책적, 학문적 관심과 관광산업 전체에서 도시가 차지하는 비중에도 불구하고, 이러한 도시관광의 개념적 복잡성 때문에 도시관광연구는 하나의 연구 분야로서 통합적인 논의가 아직까지 부족한 실정이다. 특정 이론이나 모형으로 설명하기에는 상이한 여러 가지관광행위들의 광범위한 집합인 도시관광이라는 현상을 종합적으로 이해하는데 있어서, 관광이라는 문화적 현상이 왜 발생하는지에 대한 근본적 질문을 바탕으로 관광경험을 이해하고자 하는 진정성의 개념의 적용은 중요한 의미를 가질 수 있다. 더욱이 다양한 관광현상을 대상으로 지금까지 이루어진 진정성 연구에서 현대 도시공간을 배경으로 펼쳐지는 다양한 담론들에 대한 논의가 이미 상당부분 진전되어있다는 점은 진정성 개념을 바탕으로 도시관광을 이해하는 것이 현대사회에서 관광현상이 가지고 있는 사회문화적 의미를 포괄적으로 살펴볼 수 있는 기회를 제공하리라 판단된다. 따라서 본 연구는 도시관광이 지닌 독특한 특성과 최근의 진정성 논의에 대한 핵심적 쟁점에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 진정성 개념이 어떻게 도시관광에 적용될 수 있는지 고찰하는 탐색적, 개념적 연구의 성격을 갖는다. Ever since MacCannell initially discussed the concept of authenticity in the tourist context, it has been central to understanding the tourist experience. Nevertheless, there has been little investigation into the concept of authenticity in urban settings, despite the fact that cities increasingly serve as popular destinations in the contemporary tourism market. Indeed, cities play an important role as centers for a wide range of tourist activities, such as visiting well-known monuments, visiting relatives and friends, watching shows, exhibitions, and conferences, and shopping. Consequently, it is important to understand the myriad attributes of cities that are quite distinct from factors considered important in other tourist settings. This suggests that the relationship between authenticity and urban tourism must be approached from a totally different perspective than the one that is generally used to analyze the traditional conception of authenticity. This chapter will address contemporary authenticity as it interacts with urban tourism.
