        Case Assignment by Adjectives in Russian

        Настоящая статья приводит анализ приписания падежа именами прилагательными в рамках достаточно полной системы русского падежа как морфосинтасического явления. Анализ исходит из наблюдения, в котором предикативныеприлагательные в краткой форме часто приписывают падеж NP-дополнению(напр. Наш преподаватель достоин уважения), соответствующие длинные формы прилагательного, употребляемые в предикативной позиции, не приписывают падеж (*Наш преподаватель достойный уважения). Такое различие в способности прилагательного приписать падеж зависит от того, является ли прилагательное семантическим предикатом или нет. Краткая форма достоин выступает в качестве главного предиката предложения, и носит достаточно семантического содержания, чтобы приписывать падеж на семантической основе. Однако длинная форма достойный не выступает как главный предикат, а является зависимым аттрибутивным компонентом NP, которая содержит пустую головуN. Поэтому длинная форма не имеет достаточно семантического содержаниядля того, чтобы приписать падеж на такой основе. Выдвигаемая гипотеза подкрепляется тем фактом, что краткие прилагательные в сравнительной степениспособны приписать дополнению родительный падеж в предикативной позиции, напр. Наш преподаватель умнее вашего. Ср. длинные формы, которые не способны приписать падеж ни в аналитическом варианте (*Наш преподавательболее умный вашего) ни в синтетическом (*Наша аудитория бóльшая вашей). Отметим, что есть случаи дательного падежа при длинной форме прилагатель ного (напр. интересная тебе книга, милая тебе девушка и т.д.). Это объясняется тем, что в таких случаях падеж приписывается не на семантическом уровне, а на чисто конфигурационном, т.е. это тип конфигурационного падежа в смысле Choo 2007. This paper provides an account of case assignment by adjectives within an integrated description of Russian case as a morphosyntactic phenomenon. It starts from the observation that although short-form predicate adjectives can often assign case to an NP complement within the predicate (for example, Naš prepodavatel' dostoin uvaženija ‘Our teacher is worthy of respect (gen)'), the equivalent long-form adjectives used in the predicate do not assign case (*Naš prepodavatel' dostojnyj uvaženija, which, if grammatical, would mean *‘Our teacher is one which is worthy of respect'). This distinction in case-assigning properties can be traced to the general concept of a semantic predicate. The short-form dostoin ‘worthy' is the main predicate of the sentence, and it has the semantic content required for case assignment. The long-form dostojnyj is not the head of the major predicate constituent, which is an NP with an empty N head and this adjective in attributive position. Moreover, it is argued that long-form attributive adjectives fail to assign case to their complement within AP whenever they themselves receive case through agreement. This hypothesis is confirmed by the case-assigning behavior of adjectives in the comparative form. When they are in predicate position, they can assign Genitive case to the object of comparison (Naš prepodavatel' umnee vašego ‘Our teacher is smarter (comp) than yours (gen)'. No comparatives can assign this Genitive case when they are in attributive position (there are two types: an analytical comparative, e.g., Naš prepodavatel' bolee umnyj *vašego / √čem vaš ‘Our teacher is smarter than yours'; and an occasional synthetic comparative, e.g., Naša auditorija ból'šaja *vašej / čem vaša ‘Our classroom is bigger than yours') However, some adjectives can assign the Dative case even in attributive position (e.g., interesnaja mne kniga ‘an interesting-to-me book', milaja tebe devuška ‘a dear-to-you girl', etc.). .). It is argued that these reflect a type of configurational (syntactic, non-semantic) case associated with a unique configurational position of the pronoun within NP, and not semantic case assignment in the strict sense of Choo 2007.

        평균유속공식의 최적매개변수 산정에 의한 유량예측에 관한 연구

        이수 및 치수, 수공구조물 설계 등을 위한 하천 설계의 중요한 요소로써, 유량의 정확한 산정은 매우 중요하 다. 현재 하천의 유량 생산은 수위-유량관계 곡선법을 사용하고 있다. 수위-유량 관계 곡선법은 측정된 수위와 유량자 료를 바탕으로 홍수기 때의 유량을 회귀 분석으로 예측하여 사용하는 방법이다. 비교적 간편하게, 특히 측정이 어려 운 홍수기 때에 유량을 예측하여 사용 할 수 있다는 장점을 가지고 있지만 수위와 유량만의 관계를 이용하므로 동수 반경, 에너지경사, 지형, 조도 등 하천의 수리적 특성인자를 반영하지 못하므로 기본적으로 개선되어야 할 사항이 있 다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 하천유량을 예측하는 새로운 방법론의 하나로 KSCE에 기 게재된 Choo 등(2011)에서 제안 한 Manning식과 Chezy식의 경험적 매개변수의 편리한 산정법을 이용하여 하천의 유량을 예측하였다. 실험실 사행 개 수로와 India 운하에서 측정된 데이터를 바탕으로 이를 증명하였고 결정계수 0.8 수준의 정확성을 보여주었다. 따라서 본 연구가 지속적으로 수행된다면 수리적 특성을 반영하면서도 간단하게 유량을 예측할 수 있는 방법을 통하여 실무 에서도 간편하게 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다. The accurate estimation of discharge is very essential as the important factor of river design for the utilization and flood control, hydraulic construction design. The present discharge production is using the stage-discharge relationship curve in the river. The rating curve uses the method by predicting the discharge based on regression analysis using the measured stage and discharge data in a flood season. The method is comparatively convenient and has especially advantages in that it can predict the discharge having the difficulty of observation in a flood season. However, this method has basically room for improvement because the method only uses the relationship between stage and discharge, and doesn't reflect the hydraulic parameters such as hydraulic radius, energy slope, roughness, topography, etc.. Therefore, in this study, discharge was predicted using the convenient calculation method with empirical parameters of the Manning and Chezy equations, which were proposed by Choo et at (2011) in KSCE as a new methodology for estimating discharge in open channel. The proposed method can conveniently estimate empirical parameters in both of Manning and Chezy equations and the discharge is estimated in the open channels. There are proved by using data measured in meandering lab. channel and India canal and the accuracies show about determination coefficient 0.8. Accordingly, this method will be used in actual field if this study is continuously conducted.

      • Extension to bilinear Routh approximation method for discrete-time systems

        Hwang and Shieh proposed a method of model reduction using bilinear Routh approximations for discrete-time systems. The reduced model derived preserves the stability and first few time-moments of the original model. Recently, Choo showed that the method can be improved by letting the impulse response energy of the original model also be conserved in the reduced model while maintaining the stability preserving and time-moments matching properties. However, only discrete-time systems represented by strictly proper z-transfer functions were considered in those works. This paper shows that both approaches can also be applied to order reduction of proper z-transfer functions.

      • Shielding Effectiveness of Open Cabinet Containing Digital Modules Using Ferrite Sheet

        <P>This paper presents an enhancement in the shielding effectiveness (SE) of an open cabinet containing digital modules using a ferrite sheet when an external electromagnetic source impinges on the gate of the cabinet. We perform an electromagnetic analysis on the inner space of an open cabinet using a mode-matching method, which proceeds in the following order: the separation of the analyzed region, the representation of fields, and the enforcement of the boundary conditions on the tangential field continuities between the separated regions. To be specific, it is efficiently utilized in the representation of electric and magnetic fields by Helmholtz’s equation in conjunction with both the separation of the variable and the Fourier transform. After confirming the convergence of the solutions to the set of simultaneous equations, we investigate the SE in the open cabinet in terms of a frequency, an incident angle, and the number and the size of slits. The computed results provide us with useful information for avoiding electromagnetic interference. We then examine the improvement of shielding performance by inserting a ferrite sheet at the gate of a cabinet. We verify that the usage of the ferrite sheet with high permeability can be a preferable solution for removing the undesirable problems caused by an external electromagnetic source.</P>

        Factors associated with health-related quality of life among overweight and obese Korean women.

        <P>Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) tends to be lower among individuals who are overweight and obese than those of normal weight, and women may be more vulnerable to lower HRQOL associated with obesity than men. Identifying factors associated with HRQOL may be crucial for improving HRQOL for overweight/obese women. We aimed to determine the factors associated with obesity-specific HRQOL among overweight/obese Korean women. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 125 women aged 20-64 years, who comprised a baseline sample in the Community-based Heart and Weight Management Trial. The data were collected from September 2010 to November 2011. The Weight Efficacy Lifestyle, Beck Depression Inventory-II, Interpersonal Social Evaluation List, and Impact of Weight on Quality of Life (IWQOL)-Lite scales were used to measure self-efficacy for weight control, depressive symptoms, social support, and HRQOL, respectively. Increased body mass index, lower self-efficacy for weight control, and higher levels of depressive symptoms were significantly associated with greater impairment in total IWQOL in the regression models. However, social support was not significantly associated with IWQOL. Along with weight loss strategies, other strategies for improving self-efficacy and alleviating depressive symptoms may be essential for improving HRQOL among overweight and obese women.</P>

      • Three Label Tags for Special Applications: Attaching on Small Targets, Long Distance Recognition, and Stable Performance with Arbitrary Objects

        <P>This paper designs tag antennas to satisfy three key goals: mounting on very small objects, extending the reading range with planar structures, and maintaining stable performance on various materials. First, the size of the tag is reduced up to 17% compared to the half-wavelength dipole without a large reduction in bandwidth and efficiency by introducing an inductively coupled feed structure. Second, the reading range is increased to 1.68 times that of the reference dipole tags while maintaining the planar structure using circular polarization characteristics. Finally, a stable reading range is achieved with a deviation in the reading range of only 30% of that of commercial tags on various objects by employing the capacitively-loaded and T-matching network.</P>

        Discharge prediction using hydraulic characteristics of mean velocity equation

        Discharge is an important factor in river design for water utilization, water control and hydraulic structures; therefore, an accurate estimation of the discharge is required. At present, a rating curve depicting the relationship between a stage and discharge is used to calculate the discharge from river systems. Although the rating curve has an advantage in that it can predict and use the discharge during the flood season in which the measurement is difficult, there is room for improvement as it does not reflect the hydraulic characteristics of rivers. Therefore, in this study, discharge was predicted using the convenient calculation method with empirical mediating variables of the Manning and Chezy equations which were proposed by the author's previous research as a new methodology for estimating discharge in an open channel. This was proven, based on the data measured in a meandering open channel system in a lab at the Mississippi River in the US and at the Columbia Del Dique Canal, and an accuracy level at a coefficient of 0.8 was demonstrated. Thus, this method, which reflects the hydraulic characteristics and predicts the discharge in a simple manner, is expected to be convenient in practice.
