Central Asia lies at the heart of the Eurasian continent. It is a concept which has a variable geography, in the sense that it can be taken as referring only to Transoxiania, or can be expanded to take in everything from Istanbul to Sinkiang. This study aims to investigate the current situation of Central Asian studies in Korea. This is based on academical achievements which are published in Korea, such as dissertations, articles and books. The first chapter is an introduction. The second chapter gives a definition of Central Asia and an general analysis on Central Asia after independence with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The third chapter deals with Central Asian studies in South Korea. The first part of this chapter introduces institutes and universities in Korea which have been engaged in Central Asian studies including Turkish studies. The second part overviews academical achievements introducing and evaluating them according to chronology, subjects and areas or countries in Central Asia. In the fourth chapter, as a concluding remarks, the author gives his own opinion about facing problems in hand and the future prospects of Central Asian studies in Korea.
