Barley is considered as one of the most important cereals for Korean in terms of production and utilization. In this review we concentrate mainly on the chemical structure of husk, aleurone layer, endosperm and embryo (especially endosperm). The relationships among the structure, characteristics and role of chemical components in barley kernel are also discussed. The nature of the fine-structure and minor components is not fully identified, however, a lot of investigation and progress in this area probably contributes the development of new technique for better utilization of barley in the future.
RAPD를 이용한 돈육 가공장의 Listeria 오염양상 분석

This study was carried out to understand the contamination patterns of Listeria in pork processing plants. A total of 402 samples were collected from carcass, pork during processing, surfaces of equipment and environment, and 238 isolates of Listeria species were identified. L. innocua was found in 64.7% of the isolates, L. monocytogenes in 33.2%, and L. welshimeri in 2.1%. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis performed to investigate the origin and routes of Listeria contamination, showed 21 composite types of L. monocytogenes and 26 composite types of L. innocua. It was confirmed that Listeria contamination begins with contaminated incoming carcass and ever-present contaminants in the processing environments. The persistence and dissemination of the same strain of L. monocytogenes and L. innocua throughout the processing line revealed that the sanitation standard operating procedure should be implemented to minimize the risk of colonization in the workplace. Molecular subtyping of L. innocua allowed us to tracing the possibility of cross-contamination during processing.
일개 대학교의 학생상담센터를 이용한 상담 내용 및 만족도에 관한 조사

일개 대학교의 학생상담센터의 상담 자료를 이용하여 학생들의 상담 유형을 분석하고, 이용 만족도를 조사하였다. 2002년 3월부터 2004년 2월까지 2년간 학생상담센터를 이용한 내용은 심리검사가 647건, 개인상담은 400건, 행사를 통한 상담이 2,058명, 이메일을 통한 상담이 32명이었다. 월별 이용률은 4월과 5월, 10월과 11월에 높았다. 심리검사와 개인상담을 받은 대상자의 성별 분포는 여자가 남자보다 모두 많았고, 학년별 분포는 심리검사가 4학년, 개인상담은 2학년이 많았다. 상담센터 이용 만족도에 대한 설문조사에서는 서비스 만족 정도, 도움 정도, 주위 권유 유무, 준비 및 진행상태에 대해 만족도가 높았다 학생상담센터가 정신건강의 지지, 교육 및 평가, 문제예방 측면의 제 기능을 충분히 발휘하기 위해서는 적극적인 홍보활동 및 다양한 프로그램을 개발하여 학생들이 보다 적극적으로 이용할 수 있도록 하여야 할 것이다. The purpose of this study is to investigate the satisfaction of students on counseling center by analyzing types of personal counseling and psychological tests performed in university counseling center. We analyzed the cases for two years (from March 2002 to February 2004) which include 32 cases of e-mail counsel, 2,058 cases of personal counsel during symposia, 400 cases of personal counsel, and 647 cases by psychological tests. The utilization rates were highest during April-May and October-November. Female students utilized university counseling center more than male students in cases of personal counsel and psychological tests. Senior students favored psychological tests, but sophomore students favored personal counseling. Satisfaction survey for student counseling center showed that most of the students were satisfied to the general services (95%), usefulness of counseling center (93.1%), advise somebody to recommend (93.8%), preparation and processing of the center (90.0%). Nevertheless, psychological tests comprise high proportion of the total counseling cases, and genuine personal counseling rate is low. Therefore, student counseling center should try to develop various programs for prevention of problems more actively and support students for emotional health.

To produce inulase from Kluyveromyces fragilis No. 351 using Jerusalem artichoke tuber extract, optimization of the condition was conducted. As results, the optimal concentration of artichoke tuber extract was 3.5% and bactocasitone showed better production than yeast extract. The optimal temperature and pH were 30℃ and 5.5, respectively. The addition of NH₄ H₂PO₄ increased the enzyme production. Inulase synthesis was growth-associated and the enzyme production increased as concentration of dissolved oxygen increased. A higher quantity of industrial grade inulase was prepared by the combination of ultrafiltration and ethanol precipitation with 72% recovery.
