Vol.20 No.2

In this study, the change of critical elements of the design evaluation was investigated during two decades at the architectural competition which was held nationwide in Germany. Specifically, the periods of investigation span both from July 1989 to June 1990 and from July 2009 to June 2010. The results of the analysis show that the cost of construction, the maintenance cost, the design of facade and the energy conservation are being magnified for the new important elements. The images of buildings and the economic aspects are meant to be high. The frequency of the critical elements for interior spaces is approximately two times more important than those for the forms and outdoor spaces. Overall, many juries of the architectural competition in Germany were interested in the elements for interior spaces. The field of function accounts for roughly the half of four basic architectural fields such as function, others, aesthetic and construction fields. The critical elements are required persistently such as context, circulation, organization of space, form, landscape and outdoor space design, arrangement of building, cost of construction, function, design of facade, location of main entrance. These items are regarded as the most important elements of the design evaluation at the competition. Knowing the change of critical elements of the design evaluation, we can understand the trend of architecture in Germany. The results of this study can be applied in Korea to develop the critical elements of design.

Vol.21 No.2

In this study, the spatial analysis of the multi-housing unit plans was investigated since 1990 for the winners at the architectural competition which was held nationwide in Germany. The investigation was carried out from January in 1990 to December in 2010. 201Unit plans were analyzed. Space syntax model is used as analyzing tool of the Unit plans. The results of the study indicate followings: 1) The interior spaces in 3LDK types and 4LDK types, ordered by high value of integration are; ① corridor, ② entrance hall, ③ living room, ④ dining room. 2) The value of integration for the kitchen is higher in L/DK type than in LD/K type, and that for the living room is higher in LD/K type than in L/DK type. The mean value of integration for L/DK type is higher than that for LD/K type. This means that traffic line efficiency of L/DK type is higher than that of LD/K type. 3) The value of integration for corridor and entrance hall is gradually lower in recent years. That is, the type of Unit plans are changing from corridor types to hall types.

Vol.17 No.2

In this Study, it was investigated what the critical elements of the Architectural Review by the Seoul Building Design Committee were. The critical elements selected by the members of committee were systematically analyzed. They were based on the 169 cases reviewed by the Building Design Committee. The committee consists of Professors, famous architects, architectural experts and official members. Thus, the critical elements selected by the committee can be regarded as the important criteria for the forthcoming architectural reviewing process. The critical elements selected by 960 members of the committee were classified by the frequency. The results in this study showed that the critical elements were ordered as follows: (1)floor plan, (2)landscape gardening, (3)form, (4)open space, (5)structure, (6)plan for preventing disasters, (7)circulation for men and cars, (8)facilities, (9)parking, (10)revision of drawings and documents. These criteria of the architectural evaluation established by the Seoul Building Design Committee can be applied to the fundamental preparation of the architectural review.

Vol.22 No.5

Buildings of the de-constructive tendency beyond definite forms are being constructed in countries with economic power, technical skills and open culture because they require social conditions to accommodate those buildings as well as a lot of construction expenses. Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid can be chosen as the representative architects of de-constructivism series who are currently working hard. Though both of them are architects belonging to the de-constructivism category, their works show different construction due to the differences in architectural philosophy and working ways. Gehry consider Architect as a fine art and enjoy (sculpture) three-dimensional structure work through Rough Model. With increasing demand for landmark atypical buildings, Hadid has been frequently awarded in the recent series of International Competitions and deals with a lot of cultural works. Affected by absolutism, Hadid showed various diagonal lines in her early construction and works based on the theme of dynamics such as lightness, gliding and light contact with the ground etc. Hadid"s Architecture which worked under the theme of dynamic contains a variety of diagonal lines that might cause the viewers to have difficulty on spatial awareness, thus It is known that Hadid"s Architecture has lower efficiency on the Circulation and difficulty on spatial cognition compared to the typical museum. According to the research findings of the previous paper that space understanding of viewers on Frank Gehry Museum consisting of complicated planes is generally better than that of them on a typical museum, the purpose of this study is to find out the Circulation efficiency and spatial cognition of Hadid Museum by explaining the space structure of dynamic Hadid Museum and the difference compared to typical museum.

Vol.20 No.5

The goal of this research is to find the difference between F. Gehry’s museum architecture’s extremely abstract and chaotic space composition and that of other architect’s. Gehry’s four museum architectures built from late 1980s to 2000 were selected for analysis. Four more museums, built in the same era with the size of that (atypical) museums, were selected for comparative studies. Space Syntax, a quantitative analysis method for spatial configuration, is used to find the characteristics of internal spaces. The Result shows that Gehry’s museum architectures’ connectivity is 0.375 times bigger and integration is 0.731 times smaller than the compared museums. High connectivity suggests that their visitors could take diverse routes. Low integration implies that their routes are less efficient than the compared museums overall. Their intelligibility is slightly higher than the other museums. This means their visitors have comparatively high understanding of the internal space.

Vol.15 No.1

With the rising demand for urban landmark building structures, freeform architectures have ever increased rapidly. Such architectural freeform represents technological and economic superiority and at the same time, socio-cultural context, functioning as a yardstick to gauge a country’s or a city’s technological, cultural and economic levels. This trend is also witnessed in South Korea as well. One good example is the Dongdaemun Design Plaza. The construction is the largest 3-dimensional irregular architectural form of South Korea, which is currently under multiple controversies before its completion in July 2013. Zaha Hadid, architect who designed the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, was initially called as an architect without an architecture or a paper architect for his presentation of intuitive and informally connected building designs. Hadid had no constructed building structure of her for some time but as she became the first female Pritzker Architectural Prize in 2004 and joined the ranks of global leading architects, she has enjoyed broad popularity for her cultural building structures in the market. And lots of her works have won many international architectural design contests. This study sought to examine the characteristics of internal space of Zaha Hadid’s construction with flexible exterior appearances. To this end, we employed the Space Syntax theory, an analytical method describing the typologic association between spaces in a qualitative way. For the purpose of this research,

Vol.19 No.5

The purpose of this study is to know the important design element for a public library, after analyzing design concept and organization of space of the prize winner at the architectural competition. To carry out the research, the best 31 works between the year of 2005 and 2010 were collected by the architectural magazine A&C published in every other month. During the research, special characters of each prize winner have been analyzed in the aspect of the design concept and the organization of space. While working on the design concept, a factor that created such concept was successfully figured out, and studying on the organization of space enabled us to know the special characters of the interior space. According to the result of the analysis in this study, the design elements which are selected highly frequent are ordered as follows; ①organization of space, ②function & shape, ③circulation, ④landscape, ⑤symbolic aspect. Through the analysis for the organization of space, I reach a conclusion, the frequent type is a “PM-ES-CJ”. The study is anticipated to be helpful in understanding the trends in the field of designing a public library, and it is also likely for an architect to use it as a reference.
