Vol.25 No.2
The present study explored how human beings live healthy and successful aging lives in coexistence with the forest according to their individual characteristics. A research model was developed to analyze the interrelations among the respondents with the forest in terms of retirement, forest perception, and forest welfare to conceptualize the view of forest-based living of retirees. Study data were collected from 12 retirees in 60~70 years old by individual interview and qualitative analysis using Grounded Theory. The analysis results revealed that the essential themes of living a forest-based healthy life with retirement include: new life as the Third Age, life to stay with, life boundary to create and self-directed life, life of togetherness, and prepared life. The present retiree has particular characteristics, which babyboomer, political-, economic convulsion, and nature-friendly life are. The study explored and analyzed the process in which individuals return to the forest throughout their lives, revealing findings that can be used to inform forest welfare policymaking for the elderly. From this exploratory study, a possibility of forest-based successful aging for present retirees was deduced.
