한국의 교육 현실은 그 중요성에 대한 높은 관심과 막대한 사회적, 개인적 비용에도 불구하고 국민들의 만족도는 매우 낮고 정책 방향과 효율성에 대한 논란도 끊임이 없다. 언론의 교육보도와 관련된 태도와 시각이 이러한 현실에 영향을 주고 있다는 점에서, 교육 현실의 인식과 개선을 위해서는 언론의 책임이 크다. 따라서 이 연구는 한국 언론 교육 보도 형식과 내용, 그리고 뉴스 가치 방식을 분석해 언론 보도의 문제점을 검토하고 이에 대한 개선 방안을 모색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 일간지(조선, 동아, 한겨레)와 지상파 방송(KBS, MBC,SBS) 저녁 종합뉴스의 교육보도 중 총 1,422건의 표본기사를 분석하였다. 분석결과, 한국의 신문과 방송이 교육 현실의 다양한 대상과 주제들에 대한 균형잡힌 보도와 체계적인 대안을 제시하지 못하고 있으며, 오히려 비리/사건 중심의 부정적 시각이나 홍보와 소개 기사들을 경쟁에 필요한 유용한 정보라는 시각으로 제공함으로써 구성원들의 교육 현실 이해에 혼란을 가져올 수 있음을 보여주었다. 따라서 교육 현실의 개선을 위해서는 보다 장기적이고 합리적인 교육 정책과 실행 방식의 수립과 평가에 기여할 수 있는 언론의 다양한 형식, 내용, 시각의 교육보도 실천이 요구된다고 할 수 있다. Due to high social and individual costs, education policies and practices have always been a target for strong criticism among the members of Korean society. Since it is strongly believed that mass media plays a significant role in shaping our attitudes and perspectives on educational issues, it is necessary to examine their reporting in order to improve our education systems. This research explores the current status of news reporting on educational issues by analyzing the content, formats and news values of education coverage of major mass media. For this purpose, a total of 1,422 education news articles from three newspapers(Chosun Ilbo, Dong-A Daily News, and Hankyoreh Shinmun), and evening news programs of three terrestrial broadcasters(KBS 1, MBC, SBS) were selected and analyzed. The findings of this study show a number of problems in current education reporting via major news media outlets. Firstly, with respect to format, educational issues are delivered mainly in straight, outbreak reporting format with little in-depth analysis or discussion. Furthermore, educational issues are rarely front page news indicating a lack of emphasis by major media outlets. Secondly, in terms of topics and target demographics, the analysis shows a number of significant problems in the methods newspapers and TV news use to convey educational issues. While newspapers allow for a substantial amount of their pages for PR/ introduction stories, TV media outlets cover information relating more to accident/corruption issues. Interestingly, both newspapers and TV news pay greater attention to secondary schools with a strong focus on college entrance processes. Finally, the analysis of news values also show a strong concentration on the specific aspects of education reporting; newspapers deliver PR/introduction stories mainly with a frame of ‘usefulness’ value, while TV news frame the accident/corruption stories with ‘negativity’ value. The research results highlight the limited role of Korean mass media in providing comprehensive information and balanced perspectives on educational issues. Therefore, it is necessary to establish better principles and practices for education reporting in order to contribute to the improvement of education systems in our society.
