The forest seemed apparently to die on the forest fire area in Honjima, Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. However, the soil that became growing basic of vegetation hardly suffered damage, and the forest recovery was started by the sprout, etc. in the next year. For restoration of forest fire area, the fascine mulching works and log barrier works using the damaged trees were used for the upper-stream, and chack dam and erosion control dam were set up in the downstream. Also, the forest restoration was tried with the plants and the microorganism that inhabit in Honjima to preserve a peculiar forest ecosystem.

This study examined methods for stand density control by using shape ratio (tree height/DBH) and its application for effective management of Pinus thunbergii coastal disaster prevention forests. We analyzed the present conditions (height, DBH, and density) of P. thunbergii coastal disaster prevention forests at 123 study sites on Jeju Island and west, south, and east coasts of South Korea and compared them with results from previous studies. The average shape ratio for P. thunbergii showed positive correlations with stand density and was significantly higher on the west coast (66.32) than on the south (49.57) and east (48.19) coasts and Jeju Island (48.29). Stands with shape ratio higher than 70 accounted for 50% of the total study sites on the west coast, indicating a decrease in their disaster prevention function compared to that of other previous studies. The stand density in most coastal areas, except the east coast, was significantly higher than the standards recommended by the Korea Forest Service and the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute of Japan, indicating the need for stand density control. According to the growth estimation equation for P. thunbergii in the coastal area of South Korea, density control is required for young stands less than 14 years old, which show drastic increase in the shape ratio, to conserve their disaster prevention function. Particularly, the first thinning of P. thunbergii forests should be implemented before the stand age of 8 years that a shape ratio exceeds 70. For disaster-prone young stands (≤ 20 cm DBH) of P. thunbergii, the stand density was higher in the standard of Japan considering shape ratio than in that of Korea aiming timber production. Hence, the standard guidelines employed in Japan, which assign higher importance to disaster prevention function based on field surveys, can be applied effectively for controlling the stand density of P. thunbergii coastal forests in South Korea, to improve their disaster prevention function.

Eperisone hydrochloride is an antispasmodic drug, decreasing spasticity of skeletal muscle and alleviating stiffness, and as a consequence, controlling pain. It is preferably prescribed with other analgesics, beneficially less decreasing alertness compared with other antispasmodics. Its fatal drug adverse reactions were rarely reported. A 70 year-old female with hives, swollen face, hoarse voice, and near fainting admitted via emergency department. She suffered from the series of the fatal symptoms after administration of the pills, prescribed for her neck pain. Two months before, she had experienced hives on similar medications. At presentation, she revealed hypoxemia and hypotension, and treated with epinephrine, glucocorticoids and antihistamines. Among the medicines she took, eperisone hydrochloride was proven as the causative medicine and others were excluded in oral provocation tests. The positive result in intradermal test with eperisone hydrochloride suggested immediate-type hypersensitivity reaction. We report a case of anaphylaxis to eperisone hydrochloride, one of the widely prescribed medicines in clinical practice, previously without awareness of drug adverse reaction. The geometric characteristics of step-pool structures and how they are influenced by channel characteristics were investigated in a steep mountain stream in the Experimental Forests of Kangwon National University in Chuncheon, Gangwon-do. Average values of steps for the study reaches were as follows: step spacing, 4.69 m; step height, 0.47 m; step drop, 0.71 m; step-forming particle sizes, 0.68 m; number, 21steps/ 100 m; the ratio of step spacing to channel width, 0.5; and step steepness, 0.13. Relationships between spacing and height of steps and channel gradient showed a negative- and positive correlation, respectively, whereas all geometric variables of steps manifested poor correlation with channel width. Therefore, step steepness, expressed as the ratio of step height to step spacing, increased as channel gradient increased. The ratio of step steepness to channel gradient representing the criterion of maximum flow resistance was 1.2, indicating the channel bed`s stable condition. In particular, the relationship between the ratio of step drop to step height and channel gradient showed a significant negative correlation, suggesting the influence of step-pool geometry in trapping sediment and providing an aquatic habitat. Positive correlations also exist between spacing and drop of steps and step particles. Our findings suggest that the dynamics of step-pool structures may strongly control physical and ecological environments in steep mountain streams, so understanding them is essential for stream management.
