BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to investigate the arsenic (As) contaminations in polished rice cultivated nearby abandoned mine areas, and to estimate the potential health risk through dietary intake of As-enriched polished rice in each age-gender population. METHODS AND RESULTS: The As contents in polished rice grown fifteen abandoned mine areas were analyzed. The average daily intake (ADD) as well as probabilistic health risk were estimated by assuming probability distribution of exposure parameters. The average total As concentration in polished rice was 0.09±0.06 mg/kg with a range of 0.02~0.35mg/kg. For health risk assessment, the ADD values in all age-gender populations did not exceed the provisional tolerable daily intake (PTDI) of 2.1?g/kg b.w./day for inorganic As. Cancer risk probability (R) values were 2.45~3.28×10-4 and 2.51~5.75×10-4 for all age population and gender population, respectively. Particularly, the R value, 5.75×10-4, for children less than six years old were estimated to be high. Hazard quotient (HQ) values were 0.23~0.31 and 0.11~0.33 for general population and age-gender population, respectively. CONCLUSION(s): The average R values assessed via intake of polished rice cultivated in abandoned mine areas exceeded the acceptable cancer risk of 10-6~10-4 for regulatory purpose. Considering the HQ values smaller than 1.0, potential non-cancer toxic effects may not be caused by the long-time exposure through intake of As-contaminated polished rice.
Primary immunodeficiency in adults is thought to be underestimated in Korea. IgG subclass deficiency, defined as a deficiency at least among the 4 subtypes of IgG subclass, IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, and IgG4, results in recurrent infections, in which IgG3 subclass deficiency (IgGSD) is the most commonly found in adult asthmatic patients. Herein, we report 2 cases of familial IgG3SD. In family 1, a female patient aged 17 years with allergic rhinitis (AR) had recurrent upper respiratory infections (URIs), and gastroenteritis. Her mother aged 50 with AR had recurrent URI, otitis media, urinary tract infection, gastroenteritis, and oral ulcer. A younger sister aged 9 years with AR and asthma had recurrent URI almost all the year round. The serum IgA level was found to be lower than the normal level in her mother and the patient, and IgG3 was decreased in the patient and her sister. The IgG3 level of mother showed within the lower normal limit. In family 2, the mother aged 39 years with nonallergic rhinitis had recurrent URI and oral ulcer. Her son aged 16 years and daughter aged 13 years with AR and asthma had recurrent URI, resulting in uncontrolled asthma. Family 2 was found to be IgG3 deficiency in mother and son, and IgA deficiency in son. The IgG3 level of daughter was within the lower normal level. Mother and the first daughter in family 1 as well as mother and son in family 2 was treated with intravenous immunoglobulin, and their recurrent URI reduced. We reported 2 cases of familial IgG3SD. Magnesium alloy is a metal with high specific strength and light weight, and is attracting attention as a next generation metal for environmentally friendly automobiles and transportation equipment. However, magnesium alloys have a problem of degrading formability due to the basal texture developed during processing, and their application is limited. Although active researches on the control of textures have been conducted in order to minimize this problem, there is a lack of research on the formation of microstructures and textures according to elemental differences. In this study, AZ61 and AZ80 magnesium alloys were selected to investigate the effects of aluminum addition on the microstructure development of magnesium alloys. This research has proven that the increase of the rolling rate results in the decrease of the average grain size of the two alloys, the increase of the hardness, and the increase of the fraction of twins. As shown on this research below, the basal texture developed strongly as the rolling ratio increased. On the other hand, this research also has proven that the two alloys exhibited different texture strength and distribution tendencies, which could be due to the effects of aluminum addition on work hardening, grain size, and twin behavior. This study was conducted to investigate the improvement of primary school lunch program. For this study, status of school lunch program, opinions of students of primary school in Yong-in city were surveyed by anquettes. The results are as follows. Menus of school lunch program were contained main dishes(cooked rice with soybean, cooked barley, cooked sorghum etc.), soups(soy paste soup, soy bean curd etc.) and side dishes(fried chicken, salad, fish cuttlet etc.). Students preferred Chinese and American style food such as Zazang rice, Tang su youk, fish cuttlet. Many students disliked Korean style food such as dried radish salad. stir fried mushroom, soybean stew and spinach salad. One-line food service was better than separate food service for school feeding system by opinion of students. In conclusion, present manues of school feedings were not satisfied to students, it is desirable the several type of manue rather than unique manue were served to students.
